Government Cannot Meet ASUU's N92bn Demand? I Naff In Waffy!

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said

“At present, ASUU wants the Federal Government to pay N92 billion in extra allowances, when the resources are not there, and when we are working to integrate past increases in pensions. We need to make choices in this country as we are getting to the stage where recurrent expenditures take the bulk of our resources and people get paid but can do no work. Since I assumed office, the share of recurrent expenditure in our total budgets had increased astronomically. In fact, recurrent expenditure accounted for about 77.2 per cent of the federal budget and we are now working to re-balance this ratio.
The country is still suffering from the effect of the 2010 increase in salary. Do we want to get to a stage in this country that all the money we earn is used to pay salaries and allowances? If the demands of the university lecturers are met and we continue to pay them salaries and allowances, we will not be able to provide infrastructure in the universities.”
*which infrastructures have they provided sef?
*So The Nigerian government cannot offer University lecturers a package that can make their life comfortable..meet them somehwere? N92bn is chicken change and just one government official can pay that money if they want to!

Okay they should leave students to stay at home and see what happens.....meanwhile i am sure their kids are schooling abroad?if yes, then wonderful.
Please after reading, lets join hands and clap for those ruling Nigeria because Education (which should be the primary concern of any serving government) has been thrown to the dogs and the onlookers can only but look!
*I will just google pictures and cyber slap the heck outta them for consolation!

  2. what's this rubbish while supposed servants of the people called legislators loot the countries treasuries. as far as i am concerned, lecturers should earn more than legislators...rather than the other way round. enough of this silly stupid excuses. there's no resources to pay lecturers yet lots of illiterate legislators are taking home this sums. mtcheeeeeeew! according to a post here

"It was contained in the public notice by RMAFC, allowances that accrue to legislators include
    Accommodation
    Senator gets N4 million
House of Reps member N3.97 million.

    Vehicle loan
    Senator N8 million
    Reps collect N7.94 million.

    The furniture allowance
    Senator N6 million
Reps N5.956 million for each member.

    Severance gratuity
    for each Senator N6.09 million,
for Reps, it is N5.956 million.
Like the vehicle loan, severance gratuities
are paid only once in 4 years

The commission however made it known that accommodation allowance is paid to each legislator every year.

Other annual allowances include those for motor vehicle fuelling and maintenance, for which Senators are entitled to N1.52 million each and their House of Reps counterparts pocket N1.489 million. Constituency, Senators get N5 million, Reps N1.985 million, domestic staff allowance for Senators amounts to N1.519 million while each Rep takes N1.488million.

Legislators are also given allowance for personal assistants, for each Senator, the figure is N506,600 while for Reps it is N496,303, for entertainment Senators take home N607,920 and Reps N595,563, recess allowance for Senators stands at N202,640 and N198,521 for Reps.

Senators get N607,920 for utilities as against N397,042 for Reps. For newspaper/periodicals N303,960 accrues to each Senator and N297,781 to each Rep, house maintenance for Senators, N101,320 and for Reps,N99,260 while wardrobe allowance for Senators is N506,600 and Reps are given N496,303 for the same purpose. .

  3. I'm a learner when it comes to economics, but I know that this excuse isn't convincing. The Federal Government usually meets the demand in hundreds of billions of naira of the Legislators, most of it disputed by Sanusi Lamido and Ngozi Onkonjo-Iweala. When it comes to ASUU, there're always hiccups. I remember in 2003 ASUU went on strike because of the poor university infrastructure across Nig. Parents pressured them a lot to call it off then, which they did. Unfortunately, OBJ didn't give a damn. Today madam Ngozi is talking about infrastructure that ASUU has been crying about all this while. What is REALLY the problem? They shouldn't be having closed-door-meetings so we know what the problem is. It's so embarrassing.

  10. Me by the special grace of God my children will not go to school in Nigeria. i spent 6 years for a 4 year course because of assu strike. almost graduated with a 3rd class cos 3 lecturers where on my case i had to carry F in their courses and graduate thank God those courses/the lecturers where not in my dept so i didn't need to pass them to graduate but the sure messed up my CGPA. Only for me to go abroad for my masters and discover that the test you on what the teach you unlike in naija where 70% of their ques are hidden in their handouts and they actually test 30% of what the teach in class. Sad Nigeria Sad!

  11. i hope jonathan is starting to realise going to harvard does not make an individual a genius.neither is working in world bank
you can pay 200 plus billion over what was budgeted for subsidy thieves yet 92billion naira is too much money for lecturers to return back to school??
the most annoying is even the self assured almost arrogant way she was saying it as if its the truth after now they wil start gaming nigerian youths if they dabble into yahoo yahoo or armed robbery
already the 2 months is almost 1 semester gone in uk/usa and almost half of a whole session sitting down at home.

  13. Stella nd my fellow blog visitors, she has a point... As we speak, the govt has approved a huge severance package for PHCN staff... Govt is paying 18k minimum wage... Govt has an overbloated civil service... There has been a shortfall in our oil exports due to oil theft and lesser demand for our oil... External reserves is dwindling...
The bitter truth is that our past leaders never planned, they were concerned with extravagant misuse of our resources and today, we're as not as rich as we think we are... The truth is that our decision not to diversify our economy is hitting us in d face... The truth is that with foreign reserves dwindling, domestic debt rising, foreign debt on the increase, FDI dwindling, oil prices falling, oil production dwindling and finally, demand for oil reducing Our economy is in the red Zone

  14. Even with all the problems i listed, there is still hope... Mrs Okonjo should ensure that her fisherman/drunkard of a boss step up the fight against corruption; The war against corruption must be geared towards recouping and re-investing all stolen funds...
Also, the diversification of our economy must be a cardinal target of d executive; d solid minerals sector must come alive for this to work, Oby Ezekwesili laid the policy framework for the revitilization of diz sector, d govt should act on it...
Thirdly, the gas masterplan must come into effect; we must develop the gas sector...
To achieve though, we must work on our educational system. It must be revamped...
    God Bless Naija
