Church Going And The Word Of God!

Today is Sunday and this is the perfect time and day to bring up this post.......

There is something on my mind that i really need to speak out.
Please if this post offends you,its left for you to either cuss me out or move on but I must say what i have to say.

The bible tells us about the word of God and fellowshipping in God's house right? The Church has been abused and all the worst things happen there....bad things that would make one even lose their faith!

I am wondering that instead of going to church to get your mind polluted, wouldn't it be better if one stayed at home,in the privacy of their bedroom and worshipped Almighty GOD in spirit and in truth?

I don't believe that all the people who religiously go to church every Sunday are better than those who don't.
Does the Bible teach us that God will decide on ones going to Heaven based on the number of times they attend church?

Please lets discuss this without any cussing out...I am really very confused as to why one needs to go and waste time in Church gossiping, backbiting, looking at whos outfit is best, who came in the best car,who has a better testimony, instead of spending that time at home worshipping God.

The person who goes to church and the person who worships God from home have both done the same thing right?

Please explain this to me!.........If this post offends you please forgive me!

  1. Nna Stella, you're right biko. The most wicked, black hearted, lying individuals are born again, I attended mass on a Wednesday morning with my oyinbo husband in Nigeria last year, I was not allowed into church because I was wearing jeans. The church usher looked like someone who frequented beer parlours in his spare time. My husband was gob smacked to say the least. In that same parish, one of the priests was accused of getting a teenage orphan pregnant o, I don't drink, I don't smoke, I try not to harm other people and or envy them. But in the eyes of that usher that day, I was Jezebel all because I wore jean and a long sleeved shirt

    1. Anon 8:36am. Nahhh...the usher thot u were a runz girl bcos u arrived with a white man. That's the mentality of the average Nigerian. Apart from church, I have witnessed a white dude and a naija babe being bounced from entering into a bar that was privately owned one time when they were launching out. Again, the naija babe being with the white man sent the wrong signal. The bouncer was willing to allow the white man enter without the babe. But he refused, so they left together.

To ur point Stella. Well, u are right. But this shouldn't deter us from fellow-shipping with God in truth and spirit. However, that u are in church every Sunday or midweek doesn't secure ur salvation. Eventho God says that judgment will start from the house of God. Bcos na dia satan dey jubilate.

And that day will witness a lot of shocker. Too much is going on, therefore only God knows His people! Selah!

    2. But c'mon jeans to a catholic church in Nigeria? That's a no-no. Standard rules.

    3. I would have requested that the usher let me talk to the Priest or someone higher up, and asked them to show me the constitution(?) Of the church/bible where it was stated I couldn't worship God in Jeans

    4. @Anon 9:20, it's not a no-no. I've actually attended a mass in Apapa, dressed in jeans and guess what? Most of d ladies in d church wore pants and no one gave a fig about it.

    5. Ladies wearing jeans in cahtolic is not allowed in nigeria....

  2. I can't remember the last time I attended church... But that doesn't make me lesser than those who sleep there.. I pray to God in my closet and He gives me answers; No, Yes or not yet.

  8. Stella you are on point even in the bible the pharisees critisce Jesus Christ for healing on the sabath day and I think you should no what jesus reply them with so according to the new testament the bible say that we should worship him the most high every time seconds, min, hrs, dys, mon, yrs, in truth and in spirit so going to church doesn't guarantee heaven or make you leave your sinful ways, but @ the same time the bible said where there are two or three in my name I'm in their midst so being among your brethen and sharing your problem and testimony among them is a very good things in sight of our lord Jesus christ.
My opinion is that if @ all I'm going to church I won't go to just make it norms and adds, I will only go to be with the people of God and know if any need help in one way or the other that I might be of helping hand. I will ask you all a question as a christian who should be moving and doing things with christian or unbeliever?

I believe dose dat want 2 worship God in spirit and truth shuld go 2 church wit d mind dat dey r goin dere nt bcos of d members but 4 d word!we can as well sit home n worship God in our closets but d Bible has sed we shuldnt 4sake d fellowship of our brethren bcos sumtyms we nid encouragement, sumtyms God wants 2 spik 2 us tru some men of God,sumtyms we nid clarification on wat we dnt undastnd, sumtyms we nid 2 b one body in Christ.....let's dnt go 2 church wantin 2 c d latest fashion or cars, let's leave all dat n concentrate on d Word and if a church doesn't suit us,we cn alwaz change 2 anoda church, dere r many churches dat r gud and are representing Christ well....if we say we want 2 b lukin @ all d negativity dat comes wit some churches, blive me,many wuld loose dia faith...it is also pertinent dat we seek d face of God n ask 4 grace 2 ovaluk tins dat wuld deter us 4rm d path of righteousness....it has bin stated in d Bible dat dere are wolves amongst us nevadless it dint say we shuld discontinue fellowship wit our brethren....it is well!may God see us all tru as we run dis christain race....it aint easy but we av grace n mercy, :) it speaks 4 us.

  14. In fact Stella your head dey there. You just watch the way our hypocritical and corrupt fellow Nigerians would begin to form religious and pious with this post.

The white man has cursed Nigerians and black people generally with religion and church going. Amazingly; after foisting it on us they have moved on:(

Look at countries where the matters of state and religion a separate. Look at the progression in such countries: Germany, England, US, France, Sweden, Fenmark. Look at countries where the populace do not even believe in God: Japan, China etc. The phones, computers, televisions, generator even up to matches that we use today is made by a country where majority are atheists.

Now compare Nigeria. Every street has a "church" . Everyone is a pastor. Yet look at the ill, filth, depravity and stench that oozes out of that country. The blood of the average Nigerian is evil. The heart of the average Nigerian is wicked. Nigerians are mean. Ojukwu wrote in one of his books that you measure a country by how well it treats it's vulnerable. Nigerians are mean to the poor, sick, widows, their cooks, house girls, drivers, in fact anyone they in their ignorant states; perceive to be beneath them in the social ladder. And 97% of them go to church or a mosque. God will surely judge all Nigerians. And I assure you there would be very few Nigerians in heaven.

Look at their gods of men. Look the life of stupendous wealth they live. WTF IS A PASTOR DOING WITH A PRIVATE JET? Preaching to who in which far away country? Shit! I dare u Oyedepo and Adeboye, go and preach on Syria, Lebanon, Iraq or even your neighbours Zamfara, Sokoto. I dare you guys. Religious misfits. And Oyedepo I am still on your case. Make sure you do not, I repeat do not come to the USA. You will be arrested. Your child abuse and physical assault video is still online. SHAME ON YOU PASTORS,SHAME.

  16. Anonymous #1 your own better. My own was in 2011 when I visited home my honest family invited me to their church on their so called anniversary day. I got there of course on jeans cos all the dresses I went home with was either too short for them or too revealing (more of dinner wear) in their eyes therefor I was left with no option than to dress on jeans with longs leave shirt all bottened up to my neck but guess what? I was asked to stay outside the service that day even when the pastor new about my coming.mwhen it started raining I forced my to into the un completed church building oo with a borrowed wrapper tied on my waist yet a hungry usher came and pushed me bak that was when I lost my cool I retaliated and before you know it he flew away. I peched on the floor behind the speakers very close before the pulpit yet all eyes were still on me. After sitting there like a criminal I asked my host family to take me home but before I left I stood up with a fat evenvelop tucked with 30k which I went straight to drop at the pulpit by then no one stopped me oooo. They called me ashawo, same name they called you Jezebel, agent of devil blablabla but in reality I do not smoke, drink, club, don't even attended any form of social gathering, I'm not married yet but can't remember when last I had a boyfriend not to talk of having sex it's been years, I help those in need despite my little earnings.. Since then I look at Nigerian Christians back home with my 3D goggles

There is one thing I dont get about tithing on miracles. For example; TITHING ON CREDIT CARD? or if one prays for a 700,000 naira job so is told to tithe ahead for it? Or one prays for a cure from a fatal disease and is told to TITHE AHEAD or a 55 yr old woman is still hoping for a fruit of her womb and so is told to TITHE AHEAD. Now when those things dont come to pass, they are told they had no faith????

  21. Also that line about wasting time in church gossiping and looking at whose outfits is best, really happens! Another thing is picking a particular part of sentence in the bible and hammering it to death 'You shall be the head' etc.

No offence to the members of the churches I will name but this is my personal experience with them! *These are my experiences, just as the Ese girl told hers about Coza*

I love to know more about God, the Trinity, the Word of God, so whenever work or further education takes me to a new place I try to look for a church.

When I attended Redeemed City of David they were selling blessings..literally.. pay 24,000 naira to get a blessing in 24 hours, however if you are broke pay 2,400 naira??? The blind that Jesus healed with spittle and clay didnt even have such amount of money to pay Him for such an outstanding miracle. Lazarus, brought back from the dead, didnt have to pay, so many examples exists in the bible.

Then I also recall my memory of worship in house on the rock when still at the muson centre. Some of the messages by Pastor Adefarasin is beneficial (to me) but I cant forget some of the arrogant things he says while giving examples. I remember this day Adefarasin was preaching and implied you were a failure if you didnt live in banana island with your children schooling in private education abroad. He openly mocked those living in surulere. Now back then, after service each person who had an interest in further worship goes to locate their home cell/fellowship nearest to their home address and guess what,I noticed *I dont live in banana island nor surulere* but I noticed a huge number of church members lined up in the surulere branch of home fellowship. I was gobsmacked, these same people had whooped and laughed when their very living in surulere was mocked!sigh!

In London I used to attend Jesus House for the message as well as the down to earth, humble manner of preaching Pastor Agu employed, but after church service and you walk down the aisle leading out of the church you cant help but hear the gossip of who wore this and that or who did this or that, single mum this or that and even though the members were, 99% Nigerian yet they were very very unfriendly. Its almost a crime to just smile talkless of saying hello, at a fellow member of the body of Christ while you walk out after a service. Its very disheartening especially if you went to church for the word of God, hope in a wicked world, courage to face the week ahead, strength to deal with sheer evil one might encounter, kindness amongst ppl with similar faith. (I later found a happier place to worship with friendlier people in HILLSONG, an interracial yet very inclusive, member oriented church With Christ at the Head!)

    1. Same experience with Jesus house. Love the pastors and sermons but some people there. . May God help us all.

    2. Thanks for this. Been looking for a good church in London. Can't do Jesus House which though close by, has very immoral members and Pastor Agu does not seem annointed to me. Will be heading to Hillsong on TCR this sunday. God Bless u.

      Delete
    3. Hmm interestingly Jesus house was my home church while I lived in England. Well I didn't notice all the stuffs u said, other than listen to d word, queue to buy my delicious meatpie after church for the week, and zoom home thereafter. So I think I missed on the 'gossip bit'. And me thinks Pastor Agu apart from being eloquent has a level of anointing. My opinion.

Now I worship in COD. Err I may have a few reservations with this one, moreso the congregation, but I also think God is present there. Summarily, concentrate on God and not co attendees. It'll behoove us to do that. Else u'll never archieve a thing in church

      Delete
  22. Back to Nigeria again I attended communion chapel one sunday, very beautiful message, yet an envelope was passed by, basically if you want the message to impact in your life, you have to pay for it????? It was the first of several envelopes, tithes, offering, building, welfare etc envelopes upon envelopes , that was the last straw and after that I felt wary about organised religion and pentecostal churches in particular. Still believe in and love God and want to draw closer though.

All said and done I dont think it makes any sense to go to a church that you have to think hard about what to wear before going, or that leaves members all pumped up yet empty about what actually was preached about or one that leaves members full of negative feelings after the service or whose leader is very controversial or easily tempted (nobody is perfect) and yet cannot humble his/herself and ask for forgiveness even as we all are striving for a common goal. Yet of those churches publicly name and shame sinners (and by sin I mean couple who had the effontery to sleep together after traditional marriage and before the church wedding)

Finally I dont think its necessary to attend church every sunday, but, if you truly have a heart to worship but know you dont have the discipline to worship God from home then find a small group of Christians to worship God together.

phew sorry its such a long one!

  24. SDK, in a way you're right: right in the sense that church-going is now bastardized and heinous acts are being committed under the blanket of "Church business", but wrong when you imply that it's unnecessary to go to church but rather fellowship in one's privacy.

The major problem with Christians today is that we neglect our own history, history of our religion, tradition, bible, and men of God. Between the time Our Lord Jesus Christ Resurrected and when the Roman Emperor Constantinus Augustus became a Christian in the 4th century AD, Christians were so persecuted that it seemed like a "cat-and-mouse" religion. The amazing part of it was that they were FELLOWSHIPPING: in old ruins, in common spacious houses, in catacombs, close to river banks...just so as not to be discovered and persecuted. Well, they could've decided to be true to Christ in the comfort and safety of their homes but then how would the WORD spread? The Apostles made it clear that Fellowship was important for our Salvation. It's ok for us to fellowship in our privacy, but it is extremely gracious to fellowship among brothers in Christ. "Where two or three are gathered in MY NAME, I AM Present". So, go to Church and fellowship. Those that are material-wise in going to church are on their own, but those that are spiritual-wise are Blessed. THE BIG GUY UPSTAIRS who sees in secret will Reward You. Be Blessed.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thank you. It is a priviledge to have a dedicated day and place to worship God. You can't fellowship at ease in many countries even in Northern Nigeria.
If you're at church for the right reasons the gossiping, distractions and loose morals of the clergy should not bother you. God who you worship(if you actually) looks at our hearts. He judges us according to our faith not how much money we donate.

  32. Hey stella...

Your opinions are true to some extent but let me share mine. Bad things are done by people who attend church and those who don't. This won't stop me from going to church when I should. Why? Because the Bible says we shouldn't forsake the gathering together of fellow believers. Plus I have learnt to release every human being from all expectations I would normally have. I know people will falter and fail and it doesn't mean they are necessarily bad people (though some people are really evil).
If you focus on yourself, your God & what took you to church, on living right and improving your relationship with God, you'll hardly have time to be in church and scoping people's attires, cars and what not. People who do that are missing the point.

  35. Toluwalase!!!! I have never seen u make a reasonable comment b4 u always find a way to say something stupid and it always make u look a fool , all u do is talk nonsense and I jst wonder d kinda person u are. I SMH

To d matter. Stella it all depends on d mind, u don't say cos d church is corrupt and lots of bad things happening dere we should forsake d gathering of d brethren. One jst have to go and worship God in truth and in spirit, not looking @ d cars, d most dressed, we jst need to go with a plain mind.
Even d bible says d word of God is a mysery, and its new everyday. Wen we go to church , or where d pple of God are talking abt d scriptures u find out dat dere are somethings u learn, and it comes with differnt kind of meaning, it changes u, ur views and thinking. U will be able to ask questions kw more abt d scripture. Dats why its important. All we need do is have a clear mind and kw wat u going dere to do. Happy sunday great pple.

  36. Hebrew 10:25 says we should not forsake the gathering of ourselves/ brethren. Depending on the version of your Bible. The church should never be neglected its his holy place imagine how much time nd money king Solomon used to build God's house. People go to church for different reasons just as people wake up n d morning and go out for various reasons. So if u fall into the category of those going to church to catch a man, check out clothes, cars nd what not if u loose out in your blessings na your biz be that if others dey give good testimony u sef go commot say thank God "I had headache but now its gone". You go to church to build your spirituality, hear d word nd worship God with like minded people.

  37. Issoraiit!!! I'm not in church today but I feel bad though. It's wrong to go to church n start snooping around what others are wearing and driving. I once attended a church that looked @ me as the worst sinner alive. I realized that everytime I was in that church, I was so frustrated and ended up not listening to the word of God. They gossiped openly n didn't think it was sin. One day, I stopped attending and all hell was let loose. I told my parents I didn't feel comfortable there and they locked me out every Sunday morning. I sha started attending oga Adeboye's church and the first time I walked in, I was greeted at the door by one cool looking guy abi usher "you are welcome sister"! No one even looked at my beautiful short dress they were so welcoming and I sat there and for the first time in 2years I truly worshiped God n I was happy. Fast forward ten years later I still am here n waxing strong...EEE!!!

  38. Stella u always make sense sha o!
But well, the only reason I still go to church is that God recommended it:'forsake not the gathering of the saints,'when two or three gathers in my name am in their mixed','at mount Zion there shall be deliverance and the children of God shall possess there possession '.etc..cos of verses like this, and God always being true to his words, there is always a special grace and power to heal, deliver and save that is usually at work when pple are in the house of God,some things happen to u for free without u praying for it or even being aware of,until mayb leta.eg a bad habit u are struggling with or a certain sickness!it happens all the time to pple.but this grace can't access u in the confines of ur home cos God told us where to get it.
Aside from that,i won't be caught 1000km near any church!the world has crept into the church with all its vices, church is more of a social gathering of every tom dick and harry.infact church is a venue for most pple to meet and map out next move of crime!its dat bad!And with the coming of fake MOGs' everywhere, its even a worse tragedy; the pple will only be a reflection of their fake pastor!
Even at that we will not pack out of the church cos the world crept in,Jesus said let the thorns and good plants grow together,on the last day he shall sieve them.

  40. Oh... I love this topic, cos I believe religion is our number one problem, the whites who brought it to our country are not even as crazy as we are over it, I love God and would never allow a man (pastor) tell me what I can see with my own eyes and charge me for it. They are taking advantage of it and they know its the fastest way to success if you are a good speaker.. I just can't stand them, they annoy me, and yes I pray to God, only him knows and understands me, church members have called me all sorts of names, from "Mani water" to "agent of the devil" because I am beautiful... So I don't give a rats ass about them anymore ...let me just stop typing before I say more than I intend to...

  41. Happy sunday aunt Stella. I totally agree with your post on Church going. I have had and heard a lot of experiences with pastors and church people. A girl I know is a church worker and is always the first to get to church for every service yet she sleeps with different men including married ones. She got pregnant 2months ago and had to abort it because she didn't know who was responsible. Her bbm PM every sunday is "church mode, do not disturb". What broke the camel's back is my mom's pastor. My mom was diagnosed with cancer of the breast and didn't tell anybody except her pastor. He kept praying and "laying hands on her" using olive oil and all that instead of advising her to get medical help. He kept telling her there wont be any problem.. To cut the long Story short, she got worse and She was rushed to the hospital and we got to know the cancer was in its last stage. She died a month later.. Few weeks after she died, we got to know this pastor wasn't even called or anointed. He was sleeping with young girls in d church and impregnating them. He takes them to his matrimonial home when his wife is away. My sis and I almost fell victim. He faked his credentials, was a smooth talker like most pastors. I still can't forgive him because I believe he killed my mom. When he should have told her to go to d hospital he kept "praying and demanding money from her till she died. Even on the hospital bed he kept on borrowing money for different reasons. My mom was educated but was brainwashed by him. And kept on having faith that God will heal her. Not knowing the pastor praying for her is a fake and a sinner. I stopped believing in churches and pastors since then. I read the bible and pray in my house. I know there are still true men of God but nowadays we can't differentiate..

to d topic, let not say cuz of of gossips, or wateva we shouldn't attend place of worship,I feel if u go to church, u grow spiritually and ur soul get closer to GOd, let forget wat the psstors are doing but just hear the world of their mouth, there is no place people don't gossip, office market etc whereava there r two or more people gathering there must be gossip,I feel reading d bible, reading different religious test makes one grow too,it human to check wat others are wearing or cars, but with the world of God will know all i s vanity

  43. Hmmm, dont even know what to say again. That why i prefer orthodox churches. They are not as demanding. Just do what you came to do and go. When you now start joining societies, then you are looking for wahala. I pray at home a lot and study my bible. I make sure i dont get too close to any man of God because they are human and the temptation is real. God see's our hearts. I love God so much, but i cant stand all these distractions.....

  44. I get really pained when I hear of how people have lost the faith due to the actions of church goers... I see it happen everyday but I'm not deterred.
When I go to church, I don't care about what is going on around me, I just worship God and move on with my life.
I don't think any offering is by force... If I have the offering and I'm convienced by the spirit of God to give, I do, if I don't have, I don't care what anybody will say,its between me and my God.
I just got back from church and my spirit has been so lifted as we studied how to enter into Gods rest even in the midst of all the turmoil going on around us.. I don't think I would have gotten that message if I had stayed at home on my own.
If you want to worship God, close ur eyes to all that is happening around you, focus on God who is the reason you dressed up, spent ur transport and made it to church. Everyone that attends church is not part of the 'church' the latter being a gathering of true believers I love my church(not the building or the denomination... I love the gathering of true believers)

  46. Where 2 or 3 are gathered, He is there! So when a couple or family prays, He is there! Our BODY is now His TEMPLE no longer a building.
It is all about MONEY! I do say when the pocket is full, the mouth is always confident! That is why pastors talk with so much confident on the pulpit, that we mistake for faith, because they don't have to worry about where their next meal is coming from!So they work hard in using psychology on people! Some use diabolic means!I have made a mental note, not to fill out any forms or personal details in church again because i don't trust any of them!

  47. Matthew 15:8 They honor me with their false lips while their hearts are far away!

Isaiah 29:13: "These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me!

God is never mocked! For he says the heart of man is wickedly deceitful!

Everybody should work out his/her salvation with trembling and fear!We all would be judged according to our righteousness!

  48. Yeah! There are a lot of negativities in the church. Yeah! There are fake pastors and churches around us. Yeah! It's no news that the Bible warns and tells us about all these. Let's tell ourselves the truth there is no perfect church but there are still good churches. We fail ourselves by looking for flashy "effizy" churches or pastors with swag instead of looking for bible-believing churches. We want where the word of God is diluted and suited our ways of lives..... I don't do everything the pastors say, if not in accordance with the bible... In all, We still need to fellowship in the church or with breathren.

  49. Stella, be careful! You are just being lazy and looking for excuses to justify your position.
Do you stop traveling on Nigerian roads because of road accidents or do you abandon your house because of fear of armed robbers.
Even the Bible encourages us to seek the truth and hold on to it. Problem is people go to church to look for fault in Pastors and the rest of the team.
Nobody holds a gun to anybody to pay tithes or offering so there should be no issue with that.

You have to find a church that ministers to your soul and worship there rather than this approach of sitting at home to worship God.
At the end of the day, each person will work out his or her own salvation. Nothing to do with any pastor.

  50. Jesus and His disciples were not materialistic as our present day churches! It is all a business organization!
When people argue blindly or cuss out people for not going to church, i ask them what about doctors and nurses on call treating the sick?
What about uniformed men on duty and at borders keeping the peace of the country?
What of people that keep the economy running 24/7 so that they can attend church without hiccup?

  51. Hmmmmmm..... This particular topic is causing wahala in my house right now. my parents are of the opinion that if u don't go to church at least once a wk u are not fufilled for that week. I attend redeem and even though am a very good singer I refuse to commit myself in that church cos the choristers there are something else. They sit on the altar so they can see everything happening in the church. If u come to church with new shoe it will be noted and stamped. If u wear trouser after church u will be looked at as a sinner. If u come to church without covering ur hair fully, u are in trouble, if u wear pencil skirt,u just came to show off ur hips. Abeg, make I kuku siddon for back hear d word of the Lord ooo

  52. I read the first post today and i just smiled. It is certainly a cultural thing. I attended mass today and one of the ladies who helped the priest with the holy communion wore a jeans trouser. it is abit nippy now as Autumn is upon us. even in the summer they wear their trouser here. its no big deal. i was also reminding my husband the other day of the mass servers at my local parish. Most of them are young females. Have you EVER SEEN A FEMALE MASS SERVER IN A NIGERIAN CATHOLIC CHURCH??? Finally the catechist in my local parish WAIT FOR IT has a piercing in one of his ear and YES HE STILL WEARS HIS EAR RING THERE. Why am i going on and on about catholic because of the first post.

May God bless us all only him can judge. some days i sit at home and follow church online because i miss my typical Nigerian church and just want to dance and worship like it is back home. the reason why i dont really agree with you Stella is because God has told us not to forsake the assembly of the brethren.

I wont stop boarding buses coz of drunk drivers or bad roads,i cant denounce Nigeria coz of bad leaders,i cnt stop going to skool coz of lazy lecturers... 58. In my own opinion, I'd say all dat is happening in d church is happening cos its end tym, nd its happening just d exact way d bible described. As much as we knw, we can't knw better dan our creator. He says we shuldnt forsake the gathering of d saints, we should simply obey. Going to church is truly impt. No matter hw much u worship, praise nd read ur bible @ home, its just can't be compared to being in God's vineyard ( d church). So I think in all, we shuld just ask God to direct us to d right church cos truly, not all churches are right.

  60. By the way, we all should realise that the church does not necessarily/only refer to a physical structure. As long as you are a believer who has the Holy Spirit indwelling him/her, you are thé church.
If everyone decides to go to church to fellowship and then not indulge in gossip, competition and all the things we are all complaining about, the (physical) church will be a healthier place.
Your church is you. Your lifestyle /attitude(s)/character etc have all contributed to making your church what it is today. So while I understand the concerns we've all expressed here about going to church, let's start by looking in the mirror. That, right there, is where the cleanup should start.
