Nigeria's Anti Gay Law - By Chuka Anthony Obi

Chuka Anthony Obi

*Writer needs an applause for this epic piece!

This afternoon, just after I finished praying, I was asked by my Unizik Alumni friends what my take was on the recently passed anti-homosexuality law. There have been so many different things said about it, and they wanted to know my perspective.

Okay. Two things.

Firstly,

"But the basic reality of God is plain enough. Open your eyes and there it is! By taking a long and thoughtful look at what God has created, people have always been able to see what their eyes as such can’t see: eternal power, for instance, and the mystery of his divine being. So nobody has a good excuse. What happened was this: People knew God perfectly well, but when they didn’t treat him like God, refusing to worship him, they trivialized themselves into silliness and confusion so that there was neither sense nor direction left in their lives. They pretended to know it all, but were illiterate regarding life. They traded the glory of God who holds the whole world in his hands for cheap figurines you can buy at any roadside stand.

So God said, in effect, “If that’s what you want, that’s what you get.”

It wasn’t long before they were living in a pigpen, smeared with filth, filthy inside and out. And all this because they traded the true God for a fake god, and worshiped the god they made instead of the God who made them—the God we bless, the God who blesses us. Oh, yes!

Worse followed!!! - Refusing to know God, they soon didn’t know how to be human either—women didn’t know how to be women, men didn’t know how to be men. Sexually confused, they abused and defiled one another, women with women, men with men—all lust, no love. And then they paid for it, oh, how they paid for it—emptied of God and love, godless and loveless wretches. Since they didn’t bother to acknowledge God, God quit bothering them and let them run loose. And then all hell broke loose:

rampant evil, grabbing and grasping, vicious backstabbing. They made life hell on earth with their envy, wanton killing, bickering, and cheating.

Look at them: mean-spirited, venomous, fork-tongued God-bashers. Bullies, swaggerers, insufferable windbags! They keep inventing new ways of wrecking lives. They ditch their parents when they get in the way. Stupid, slimy, cruel, cold-blooded. And it’s not as if they don’t know better. They know perfectly well they’re spitting in God’s face. And they don’t care—worse, they hand out prizes to those who do the worst things best!
(Romans 1:18-32 MSG)

At the very beginning of the passage, you see that ALL men and women KNOW God's law on this thing- it is a NATURAL law. You don't need anybody to teach you this particular thing. You were BORN with the knowledge that homosexuality is wrong, whether or not you derive pleasure from it.

So this proves that hating homosexuality has nothing to do with being Christian or religious. It is a LAW OF NATURE.

Next, you will notice something unusual- the text first describes evil doings, but then says WORSE FOLLOWED before adding homosexuality. In other words, homosexuality is a worse form of sin- a progression from sin to greater sin. A further degeneration in man's journey to the bottom.
Now, as you read on, next you see the DIRECT EFFECTS of this degeneration- the passage says, "ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE". Why? Because of how low man had sunk; to the point of homosexuality. So homosexuality is an all time low!

Now, to the second thing.

People are making noise that this is not the right time for passing this bill...that we have other pressing issues to deal with. The answer to that is simple.

1. There is no wrong time for doing what is right. There might be a wrong time for doing a good thing, but there is never a wrong time for doing what is RIGHT. There's a difference between a good thing and a right thing. That's a discussion for later.

2. The best way to deal with a problem is to nip it in the bud. You don't wait for that lump in your breast to become malignant before you see a doctor do you? So why do you want us to wait until homosexuality becomes a real problem before you deal with it? It's not nipping our problems in the bud created this monster that Nigerian corruption has become.

Arguing that we should wait until homosexuality is a huge problem like the rest of our problems is the thought pattern of inadequately enlightened or immature minds...or worse still, people who's job it is to criticise the government whether or not they do the right thing. We all know such people- they're around us everyday. They only delight in their own opinions, and get a kick just from going against the grain.

In conclusion, our government has gotten a lot of decisions wrong over the years- and a good number of those wrong decisions were in an attempt to copy the western world. This one time that they have made the right decision- and even defied popular world opinion just to do what is right, the should be praised. Commended. Lauded.

God Bless You.

      Thumbs up to you dear.
I have a stand on this and it's very clear, "you can't decide who a person should or shouldn't love and also live and let live". Homosexuality isn't any worse than lying, stealing or fornication (man-woman (unmarried) sex)!

    5. It is a great world mr obi, some people like fish, some like meat, some like both, you cannot force your ideals or orientation on other people, live and let live.. Do u really want to know how sad gay people upon discovering their sexual orientation? Do u know that some of them kill themselves because they know that the society does not accept them? Do u know that some of them have resorted to staying single for the rest of their lives, do u know that some can pay as much as 10million naira(if they have) to correct their orientation if that ever exists? All we need is progress and please try to respect other people's circumstances. Gays are gay naturally just the straights are straight naturally!

    6. Anon 9.35am, u have a brain in ur head. Homosexuality is a moral issue that should be stamped out by the churches or other religious houses. It is not the business of the govt wat two consenting adults decide to do with themselves. It tramples on fundamental human rights to jail someone because of sexual orientation. Nigerian govt has a lot on its plate as it is than to engage in witch-hunting of homosexuals

      Delete
    7. Thanks dear, he said something about treating issue before it out growns how about Boko H ,courrption and other things that has been eating nigeria up and nothing has been done about it. For their info we all have sinned and fall short of GOD'S glory be it man to woman or woman to woman all is sin, on the last day,we will give the account of our lives while on earth.

I love it as well, nature termed it wrong and God also did,we should not copy the western culture in their beliefs,i agree with you but my question is this if your child was born gay what would you do? If you daughter has affection for just women naturally, what would you do?would you feed her to the police dogs or report her to the Nigerian police, where she will be taken as an abomination and probably the keys to her freedom thrown away?would you!
I don't know what version of the law the presidency has signed on gay rights, but i think the federal government has some public explaining to do,i think the government is also citting down sexual diseases in exchange for you getting locked up,but we really need to remember this,Nigeria is not just a Christian county, its multi diverse in culture, everyone is allowed to worship their own God or gods, whichever they pledge allegiance to,you don't have a right to steal that freedom from any Nigerian its wrong.
The passing of this law is a failure on leadership, and government, remember Nigeria is diversed, you don't just speak for Christians, speak for Muslims, pagans, arthiest, even cultist that's what leaders do.

Secondly, total freedom shud nt b given 2 religious practices cos som of dis practices go against natural laws. Do jus justify female circumcision, child marriage, human sacrifice, killing of twins, rape, domestic violence, etc cos of religion? Believe u me, som many traditional religions in Africa DEMAND such. So my brother, lets call a spade a spade n notin less or more. Homosexuality is totally n completely defies d natural law.

  20. Well written piece of work written from one perspective- Religion.
Homosexual relationship is an act that has eaten deep into the Nigerian society.
Looking at the argument from all perspectives, I'm not as homophobic as alot of Africans cos I live in a society that promotes human right, but doesn't mean I encourage it.
I think the anti gay law in Nigeria is a welcoming development as it's best to address the issue now before it gets out of hand.
My question now is, what happens to all those government officials, entertainers, and society men / women who engage in homosexuality? Abi na who dem catch in the act be thief? I can name loads that I know are fags but live a double life cos of the society. It boils down to the same hypocritical lives most Nigerians live innit?

  30. Choosing our stand about same-sex sexual orientation has been pressured by d so called western world & I commend GEJ for taking a stand to supporting d majority of Nigerians views. I think gayism, like other sexual orientations such as Exhibitionism, transvestism, machotism, Voyeurism etc...(check d odas out:google is ur friend) should all be treated as abnormal behaviour and as a result psychotherapeutic measures should be taken to correct d ones who geniunely desire change. As for d adamant, d law should pose strigent laws that would discourage them and others from promoting abnormal behaviour. Just take a moment and think outside d box If humans are 'naturally or normally' made for homosexual relationship.

  44. Stella make I ask you (since you are in support of this claptrap): Some oyibo people think it's a sin, a taboo and a crime for whites to marry non-whites particular dark skinned people. Many countries including Germany, USA and much more prohibited interracial marriage at one point and they killed, tortured, bullied or jailed those found guilty of interracial copulation, friendship or marriage... matter of fact, many still carry out this act but in secrecy. Now how would you as a woman who is in interracial marriage feel if Germany decides to make interracial marriage illegal and punishable by 14 years imprisonment? What will you do? Wetin u go do if they carry your child(ren) throway for being the product of what they consider a sin, abomination and crime? A lot of Mormons think being black is a sin according to their doctrine, so they must be correct cuz that's what their holy book and their God said? Do you believe you are a sin because someone's religion said so? What if an atheist becomes the Chancellor of Germany and decides that Christianity and all religion must be banished b/c he/she does not believe in God? What if the leader who is an atheist decides that anybody who practices any religion or speaks of God in public must be imprisoned for "corrupting" people's minds with a being they can't even see, what would you do?

See as northerners wan bully the rest of the nation into adopting Islam as their religion and adopting Sharia Laws and everybody dey scream no no no... Muslims shouldn't force their religion on others, so why una wan force your ideologies on gay ppl? How will this law change the sorry state of Nigeria? Upon all the life threatening issues worrying Nigeria (from pedophilia, incest, rape, kidnapping, murder, robberies, job scarcity, domestic violence, police/military brutality, house-help abuse, illiteracy, filthy government and politicians, horrible roads, prostitution, lack of electricity, expensive and low quality healthcare, high infant mortality and the list goes on) na gays we wan focus on? Chai, our politicians know that the priorities of the people are messed up, that's why they passed this law to take our eyes off their incompetence, their greed, their corruption, their callousness and all the atrocities they are doing with the country's resources, wealth and money. See as $10billion (the one we know of at the moment) dey go missing and nobody dey protest for answers and action in the street. See as the gov't dey budget trillions for chop money, PAs and whatnots and nobody dey do anything. Some politicians wan legalize pedophilia in the name of religion and marriage and this is what we want to waste our energy, brains and time on? Chai... Those of you way dey applaud this ukpata, I hope y'll are ready for the repercussions cuz una no know that one day, you go annoy the wrong person and that person go accuse you of being gay and BAM, you go find yourself singing kumbaya for kirikiri just like that. One day you go vex your landlord and your landlord cuz tell the police that a gay person dey occupy his/her property and before u know it, the public go descend on you and rip you to pieces before you can even scream "I'm not gay oooo". Saying you no be gay won't be enough to save you, so make una think, look and reason before you jump. The funny but sad thing is that a lot of people applauding this law are closeted gays... the kind that do gay ish on the down low then go back to their wives, husbands, partners and whatever then come out for broad day light to lynch and abuse gays. Naija people, shine your eyes well well oooo. Focus on energy on things that matter. Focus your energy on getting rid of the filth we have in the name of government and politicians. Focus your energy on forwardness, unity, prosperity and peace, so we can put Nigeria on the map for being a great nation rather than a nation known for bloodshed, backwardness, 419ers, dirty politicians and basically a "never-do-well" country. CAIO.

    1. May God bless you! God is God and he doesn't need us to fight or legislate on His behalf. He wants us to show love those that need love, show compassion to the weak and oppressed, preach of His love to those in pain and live by example. You can never hate in God's name. If you believe that gays should be harmed and still commit sin, may God judge you as you judge others.

    2. Wow, your message packs a powerful punch. Bravo for nicely stating your views without ranting, raving and cussing like a lot of people on here do when they want to get their 2cents across or when someone doesn't share their point of view. There's nothing left to add except that you've really said it all and you hammered it nicely. Stella baby, the ball is in your court now, we are waiting for answers. Happy New Year folks!

    1. I think sensible people are lambasting the government because we want to see them take action regarding things that matter such the horrible unemployment rate, unending strike, dangerous roads and the list goes on and on. Like someone already said, this law won't change the present state of Naija, so can we please pour our attention onto things that matters and leave gay matter alone. Gay this gay that, kilode?
