Various news websites have picked up and reported a satirical website’s story that the Ugandan President’s daughter has come out as gay.
Abril Uno, a satire website from the US, last Wednesday published a spoof article which joked that Diana Kamuntu, Yoweri Musveni’s daughter, came out as gay in a radio interview.
“I am gay, I am homosexual. I have known this since I was a little girl,” the article quotes of Kamuntu.
In it, Abril Uno names real radio host James Kasirivu, as conducting the interview, and says that he “noticeably was in shock, and could not seemingly get words out of his mouth.”
The article was picked up by several websites including PointBlankNews, Codewit and countless others. While many have begun to take down the story, others remain, and some still credit Abril Uno for the story.
Abril Uno, the name of which means ’1 April’ in Spanish, describes itself as “a satire, parody and spoof web publication. Abril Uno uses invented names in all its stories, except in cases where public figures or companies are being satirized, parodied or spoofed. Any resemblance to the truth, actual events, actual persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental and is intended purely as a satire, parody or spoof. All articles contained herein are fiction (“fake”), untrue, for entertainment only, and of no news value whatsoever.”
On reading the story, many Twitter users congratulated Kamuntu for the fake revelation, not realising that the site is satirical.
While the revelation that Museveni’s daughter is fake, the anti-gay bill which the satirical story says she opposes is sadly real.
President Museveni signed the draconian Anti-Homosexuality Bill in front of politicians and reporters last Monday at State House, his official residence in Entebbe. It has been widely condemned by the international community.
