SPREAD THE WORD - Their Next Victim Could Be Saved By Your Actions!

Please  let’s all be careful especially those who are always interested in buying parcels of land, following strange agents to unknown places to check out apartments or cars for sale. This is a great eye opener !!! Always ensure you transact business through a known and registered office, it’s safer. God help us all.

This is in memory of our friend and colleague.
FACTS.
On the night of Friday, the 7th of March 2014, our friend and colleague disappeared.
He was with a friend in his rented apartment in Port Harcourt on that night when he received a call. After answering the call at about 8pm, he told his guest he had to dash out to meet some colleague and that he would be back shortly. That was the last time anyone saw him alive, he met with the persons but never returned.

He had planned to travel to home to his family in Warri on Saturday but sadly, their expectation to see him alive and well was cut short. He never came home.
By Monday his family was fully panicked.  They checked and confirmed that there were no accidents on the PHC-WAR road and that his name was not on any manifest of the more popular transport companies.

Further enquiries revealed that there had been several withdrawals from his account via his ATM card along the Eleme/Onne axis of Port Harcourt.
It was then assumed that he had been kidnapped, though there was never any call or demand for ransom.

THIRD PARTY INFORMATION
Fast forward three weeks to Friday 28th of March, when a guy flew in to Port Harcourt from Lagos. Apparently, he came to close a business deal.
On arrival, he checked into a hotel and got in contact with a driver/mechanic whom he was familiar with and arranged for the guy to take him somewhere for a business meeting with some persons. Upon arriving at the location, they were attacked, but luckily the mechanic/driver escaped. He returned to the location a while later with police men and met the corpse of his client (the man from Lagos). Per protocol, the police searched the area and discovered the now de-composing corpse of our colleague.

OUR THOUGHTS
It appears there is a syndicate or gang of criminals who are using a ‘honey trap’ to lure unsuspecting people to an untimely and gruesome death. We believe based on the little facts we have that they are parading an item for sale for an unbelievable bargain price. WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT IT IS OR HOW THE INITIAL CONTACT IS MADE (MOST LIKELY ONLINE), it could be anything from a high end vehicle or heavy duty equipment to real estate property, though it’s more likely to be a car/vehicle because it is unlikely our colleague would go out at night to inspect a piece of land and the fact that their last victim contacted a mechanic/driver indicates that he was likely looking for his input/opinion on the state of item he wanted to buy. AGAIN, WE DON’T KNOW THE DETAILS OF THE ‘DEAL’ BECAUSE NONE OF THE PEOPLE WHO STARTED THE DEAL SURVIVED TO TELL THE TALE.

Whatever it is, we believe that they are offering it at a substantial below market price, hence the interest from would be victims.
After price negotiations (presumably on phone), they would arrange to meet up with their customer for inspection only to accost the person, beat and torture him/her until the person divulges the pin code to his/her ATM card(s) which they would have already taken. They proceed to confirm the code they have forced the victim to divulge is correct by using it in any nearby ATM machine (also definitely check the balance), after which they kill the person and set-up another deal for the next weekend while they continue withdrawing from their victims account(s).

It seems logical because in the build up to the deal, it’s logical that the person would have started accumulating money in his/her account towards the purchase.
This scenario fits our colleague’s case.
They called him on Friday night of 7th March, 2014 to meet-up with them, he went, they beat him and tortured him till he gave them his pin, they confirmed it and killed him.
The same scenario played out again three weeks later only this time, one of the two people escaped to raise an alarm.

Please we all need to be careful not to fall for this or any other ‘honey trap’ be it via online or any other media.
SPREAD THE WORD - THEIR NEXT WOULD BE VICTIM COULD BE SAVED BY YOUR ACTIONS!!

The shell staff was a young man under 40 years

Stories abound of kidnap cases and ATM theft

Some of the learning(s) from this incident.

1.       Stop receiving bank alerts on your phone (Kidnappers check phones for account balances and make withdrawals from accounts after obtaining the PIN from the kidnapped individual)

2.       If possible, maintain a separate account for ATM use (separate your salary or main account from the account that has an ATM card. Someone says she has an account she transfers funds too for weekend use. Never a lot of money in that account so the loss of the card / account would not be an issue)

3.       Have only one ATM card on you at any point in time (especially for ladies, do not put all your “cards” in one “bag”

4.       ALWAYS let people know what you are up to (or where you are going to)

5.       Be very wary of “deals” that seem too good to be true

    1. Ah, na so so bad news every second. What is this na? But it's true o, some people like awoof...I always say that anyone who buys stuffs that are very expensive way below the sale price tag, often get into trouble. when something is being offered u too cheaply, then u are also a thief I'd u don't query it. I am not talking about the regular sales that goes on in stores where u buy clothes etc. I am talking stuffs like a piece of land, cars, etc. One should know that when things like these are offered almost free, then the person may have stolen it or something. Pls let's be cautious o. I don talk my own. Because when a dubious person knows that u are also trying to cut corners from the company or person u represent, they'll take advantage of u.

  3. ATMs a have cameras so if the story is true they should get a police report and the bank will release the face of the person that withdrew the cash.

Plus I always believe it's greed that kill people. When you want to get "something for nothing".

I no dey do deal oo. If you have juicy deal why is it me you want to give it to? Are all your family members and friends dead?

    1. Abi o. Meanwhile atm surveillance camera can only work in a country where there is protocol and orderliness. Most of the times the cameras are bad. Thieves know this, and even when it works, they don't pursue it or bring the culprits to book. Our police men are too lazy. Most of the solved crimes today has happened becos of our access to media. Ordinary citizens like u and I catch thieves more than police. Thank God for the advent of BlackBerry broadcasts and passing of pixs on the Internet. Otherwise most pple would go free. Even when u gather the evidence yourself and u present them to police, if u dont give them transport money to buy petrol or credit on their phone na yinmu u dey o.

  7. ......And we are all shouting boko haram!!! These ones are also part of the problem.....

My husbands boss in the office was on his way home from the island after working late. On getting to a traffic light, he was waiting for the light to turn green when a car blocked his and two guys entered his car with pistols. They drove him to an atm and withdrew to the limit for the day. They beat him and woke him up at 1am and withdrew again to the days limit.....the man had just receieved his incentives for the year. They dumped him along ogun state road in singlet and boxers and left him to beg his way home. No1 stopped to help him o. It was a woman who slowed down, pulled down her glaSs and threw 500 to him. He quickly used a payphone to call his wife and started finding his way home.....

    1. Kai imagine. Rule no1, never stop at a traffic light at night o. Am a mafia when I drive at night. Cross me and u are a dead meat. I don't even wait for the light in quiet areas, I look left n right sharp sharp and zoom I go. It is only God that protects one, but u have to be sharp too when u are driving. Always Check ur sides and rear view mirrors. If a car tails u longer than is necessary, make a detour and move faster. Even at some police checkpoints u av to be smart. Don't ever engage in long convo with them. Be apt and stern...I dont even wind down if I decide to stop. I keep a straight face and I don't patronise them, as I no be tif and I no carry contraband, so why would I be gisting with any police?

    3. I don't wait for traffic light at night again oo. Since my friend told me someone approached her for her for right in front of 1004 traffic at 7pm.
And one would think the island is the safest place in Lagos.

I think those touts now know people let their guards down on the island, cause one tried to take my phone too one time on Ozumba in day light oo @ about 3pm or so. And the funny thing everyone would just mind their business nobody wants to die helping another

    1. Go to Gold Souk. Tell the cab man to take you to that place. Its a big market. They have both wholesalers and retailers. Them plenty for there. I can't rem the name of the shops, but if you ask, they will direct you upstairs to the wholesalers. Don't go on a friday cos they don't open shops early plus its majorly the retailers that sell on fridays.

      Delete
    2. There's one very big shop just before you enter gold souk. He sells mostly to Nigerians.

Ask any Nigerian you see around gold souk they will direct you there. Once you enter the shop you will see pictures taken with some Nigerian kids hung there and some Naira on the wall.

His rates are always better. About $3 to $5 off market price per gram

  14. The fourth point can't be stressed enough. Always ensure a friend/ family member is aware of your movements, especially when you are going to meet people you don't know for the first time. Give that friend/family member the phone number of the person you're meeting as well as the venue of the meeting. Be very wary of making friends online from twitter, fb or blogs. The world is so messed up I don't think one can possibly be overly security conscious.

Unfortunately, the country is going into some dark places and you don't even know who to trust, not even family sometimes. Nigeria is going through some serious things.

    1. Nice one. Our dumbass police should know that getting access to the ATM camera footage should be the first thing they should have done, and If the bank claims that the ATM cctv ain't working, honestly, a lawsuit would be a very good place to start. Why in the world would an ATM cctv not work? Why is it there in the first place then?

  53. For the criminals to have killed those people after collecting their ATM pins means they might be persons known to them. If not they collect the atm cards and make all the withdrawals and release them. I think we should always tell someone where we are going - if possible to the knowledge of the person we are going to meet. That might change any evil plan they're hatching, knowing they might not get away with it, since so and so knows.
