Grand Mum Sentenced To Death For Causing Grand Daughters Death...

An Alabama jury has found a woman guilty of capital murder after she made her 9-year-old granddaughter run for three hours as punishment - causing her to collapse and die.

Joyce Hardin Garrard faces the death penalty or life without parole for the February 2012 death of Savannah Hardin, after the verdict was delivered on Friday.

Garrard showed no reaction when the verdict was read, but she hugged her three attorneys before being led out of court by deputies. She glared toward the audience as she walked out silently.

Some of her relatives sitting behind her began to cry.
Defense attorney Dani Bone laid his head on the table in front of him after the verdict, delivered after about 3½ hours of deliberation. Garrard's husband, Johnny, sat behind her, hugging a crying daughter before the daughter ran from the courtroom sobbing.

The youngster collapsed and had a seizure after carrying wood.
She died three days later in hospital

Garrard is scheduled to be sentenced on Monday. Jurors will hear additional testimony and make a decision on whether to recommend life without parole or death. The final decision is up to the judge.
Authorities claimed the 49-year-old woman forced Savannah to run and carry wood for hours as punishment for a lie about candy. Savannah eventually had a seizure and died three days later in a hospital.

The defense denied the woman meant the girl any harm, but jurors rejected that claim.
Garrard had testified she only made the girl pick up sticks in her yard as punishment the day of her collapse. Garrard testified that the girl did run, but only as practice for races at school.

Prosecutors contended that Garrard refused to let Savannah stop running even after the girl was vomiting and begging for an end to the exercise. In court, they cited a school bus surveillance video that captured Garrard saying she would run the girl and teach her a lesson.

Assistant District Attorney Carol Griffith said Garrard killed the child intentionally by berating her and making her run around the yard picking up sticks
'She was tortured,' Griffith said.
Defense attorney Richard Rhea had portrayed his client as a devoted grandmother who was helping to look after 9-year-old Savannah while the girl's father was overseas working as a contractor for the U.S. State Department.

Some witnesses who testified about seeing Garrard force Savannah to run seemed more upset in recalling the scene from the stand than Garrard appeared to be, Griffith said.
But Rhea urged jurors to ask why none of the witnesses intervened if they thought the abuse was so awful that day.

He said, 'I think we have all had the thought: "If it was that bad, why didn't they do something?'' He said witnesses didn't notify police about their concerns until days later, after they heard girl was on life support.
'Then it becomes "Oh yeah, I witnessed boot camp. I witnessed the drill sergeant from hell",' he said.

Garrard was the final witness to testify on Wednesday and attorneys for both sides concluded their closing arguments Friday afternoon.

Garrard has been in jail awaiting trial for three years, and that time typically would be applied to any potential sentence.

Savannah's stepmother Jessica Mae Hardin has also been charged with her murder, which carries a life sentence.
The girl was in the care of her stepmother and grandmother while her father was away. Hardin, who is awaiting trial, gave birth while in custody in February 2012.  culled from dailymail.

    2. That's a mean punishment for a child.
What happened to denying her some luxuries like watching TV or eating her favourite snacks.
Or making her write an apology letter or something.
Those are very simple but humbling punishments for kids.

  5. Stella before u call the grandmum wicked woman, u shld first of all find out if the girl had any underlying ailment not known to the family. Is the woman not better than some women in Naija that pour hot water or oil on their helps. It's just that the girl unfortunately died. Like the defence lawyer asked, all the witnesses that testified against her, how come none of dem tried to stop the punishment or even called the cops. If the girl hadn't died, would u have called her wicked? As for the woman not showing any emotions, some pple are gud at masking their emotions. U don't know the level of agony that woman goes through when she is alone, I won't be surpriseed if she ends up committing suicide.I recall doing worse punishments while growing up cos I was very stubborn. But I didn't die. It's just that people's body systems are different.

    1. Madam i dont understand what you are trying to justify here oh... does it even matter if she had an ailment? how do u give a child such punishment? And to think u were comparing it to some nigerian devil in human form that pour hot oil on kids as punishment...does it maje it right? its inhumane! what is wrong...is wrong! Wicked people everywhere. mtcheww

    3. A million likes Ada mazi for ur comments. As a kid i had more punishments that beats these, now as a parent i know i have also punish my kids more than this did we die? The child may have an undiscovered illness, pple lets be objective when we see issues like this.

    5. Inasmuch as I believe dat d punishment was too much for d girl, apparently cos she died from it, I must say it might not have appeared that bad or difficult even to her cos if it had been, d nosy neighbours would have called d cops on their own. She deserves to go to jail but death penalty or life sentence? I don't think so

    6. Is this a sane or mad person talking? A child is tortured to death and you feel its justified by comparing the act to people who pour oil or hot water on their helps in Nigeria, are those people normal? I feel so sorry for you.

      Delete
    7. It's true joor!!! If the bystanders thought the punishment was too much, why didn't they speak up. Americans that like to talk and be in everyone's business. It's unfortunate for the granny that the girl died. Rip baby girl

Ada Mazi, I agree with you. I can remember doing even worse punishments when I was her age but I didn't die. It's just an unfortunate situation.

    9. Ok..why don't u try it on ur daughter. .Make her carry wood and run around for 3 hrs. .I'm sure she'll be fine and jumping up after she's done..or maybe even asking for more..since ur gene is strong and u didn't die during ur time...
U say she shouldn't be called wicked. .There are some lines that just shouldn't be crossed especially when d child is not urs. .
When a child that is not ur biological child is staying with u either temporarily or permanently, u have to be extra careful with that child cos something little can happen and u will be tagged a 'witch'. .

    11. How do you even think? A child was made to run for 3hrs while carrying wood and it seem to you as a normal punishment? Is she doing a marathon? She was even vomiting blood and begging the grandma and the grandma didn't spare her and that still seem normal to you? You mean you did worse punishment? They made you to run for over 3hrs? By worse whay you do you mean please? The punishment I remember doing was kneeling down and raising my hands up with closed eyes or been flogged with the side of ruler on my palm at that age. Or I will be asked to write, I'm sorry mom or dad 300 times...

The grandma wanted her dead. She didn't like the child. I can't imagine my grandma doing that to me. And what was her step mom doing?

    12. Oh please shut up. Who is your mother that allowed you run around for 3 hours and even gave u worse punishment??? You are sure u were not adopted???? Check again. There is a very thin line between how to discipline a child and wickedness. In this case the grandma is a wicked woman. I know how my mother adores her grandchildren. Haba 3 hours???? MBA nu.

    13. For those cursing me, I guess u didn't understand my write up. All these name calling on the woman is bcos the child ended up dead. What if she had survived, would u guys be saying all these. I am not saying that the woman shld be exonerated. It takes the special grace of God to train a child well especially if u have a stubborn child. If u don't have one, thank God and move one. If u do, am sure u will understand what am saying.

    14. Ada mazi , u are among those that comprehended this story

Y wud the woman want to kill her in the open , people need to understand the law. Was it premeditated or man slaughter , the story indeed tells that it's not a murder case .

Am sure the child had an ailment that was unknown to the family , and for those that said she carried wood , pls read the story again

    15. Ada ooo Ada, u made a pertinent statement, albeit contradictory ones. Ur argument is that those of us here endured much more severe punishments. And that we endured it. But what u should understand is that in saner climes our folks would have gone down for child abuse. Oh yes dear.

The westerners have zero tolerance to such things we get away with as Africans. I'm sure u know that. The inhumane torture some women give their kids and maids shouldn't be a yardstick to measure this grandma's wickedness. Even if the girl didn't die and the authorities found out what she did, they would have arrested her still. The good thing about these oyinbo people is that the do not wait for crisis to happen before they take actions. Unlike Nigeria where something bad would have happened before we hear of it.

  6. If its naija now..they will say she was supporting her family with firewood selling....or sent her to pick firewood to cook jollof rice...but in this case what is this woman's excuse.? Just allowed a 9 year old girls life end abruptly like that......May her soul rip..........Stella u must enjoy me

  15. I don't really know what to say. Its just a tragedy that's all. I choose to believe that the grandma is just a strict disciplinarian and didn't mean her grandchild harm.
Whites poke noses a lot into people's business such as calling police when ur volume is too high or they see ur kids at home alone without an adult so I se no reason why the 'testifiers' couldn't have intervened when they saw how bad the girl was being punished.
Anyways, God is d best judge. Its just gonna be a painful tme for the entire family who just lost their lil girl and is also about to lose their mother

  18. The points I see here are-
9yr old vs grandmother and stepmother
    Candy lie
Run for 3hrs while carring wood
    Girl dies.

To those saying the grandma did no wrong, I ask you, have you EVER lied as a child, as an adult? Has grandma ever lied? Was she killed for her lie?
What is a candy and how much is it sold pls that she'll punish a 9yr old for 3hrs for it?

I saw a stepmother in that story and I can imagine what might have happened: Grandma from hell and evil stepmum "tagteaming" over a 9yr old, grandma probably never liked her mother and by extension didn't like the girl, the poor girl stood no chance.

To those saying the girl probabaly had an unknown ailment that caused her death, didn't grandma know about the ailment or she just didn't care?
Didn't she give ANY sign of passing out or something? I'm sure she did but probably because of her hatered for the girls mum and the stepmum's urging, she ignored the signs.

What's worse, she showed no remose! Who kills a child and then show no remose if not a deranged, demonic person? She didn't care, I'm sure in her heart she's singing, "mission accomplished".

My opinion? She deserves the death penalty, you don't go about killing anyone, much more your own blood that is supposed to be thicker than water! Grandmothers are known to be angels who'll do anything (good) for their grandkids. She's evil and shouldn't be allowed in the midst of good people.

The stepmum doesn't surprise me though, most stepmothers are known for being devious and manipulative, whatever punishment she gets is fine by me.
