Workers in Osun And Edo Protest 5 Months Unpaid Salaries .

Civil Servants from across Osun State rallied in Osogbo tuesday in protest against the State Government  for their unpaid Salaries for over Five Months.

The workers who gathered at the Fakunle Comprehensive high School blocked
the main Olaiya Junction of Osogbo and marched through the Osogbo/Gbongan Road, chanting anti-government songs. The workers alleged that Junior Workers were owed for 4 Months while those of Senior Cadre about 5 months.

The workers, led by the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress in the state, Mr. Olatunji Akinyemi, alleged said that apart from the failure of the Governor Rauf Aregbesola-led administration to pay them the outstanding salaries, the same government had refused to remit pension contributions, deducted from their previous salaries, to various retirement savings accounts.

They claimed that the governor was busy spending the state’s resources on campaigns of the All Progressives Congress and left workers to suffer untold hardship.
The Osun APC’s attempt to blame the failure of their states salary on Jonathan met a brick wall as President Jonathan addressed a mammoth gathering in Osun State and categorically stated that the FG does not owe any state any allocation whatsoever. The Whistle gathered several opinions on the matter:

Mr. Tolulope Lawal said: “Federal government is not owing any state, most state borrowed and they must pay back before the end of his or her term. Aregbesola is owing 230 billion naira. it will take osun 28years to pay back! is that the type of change we want?”

Highlighting the governments’ ineptitude and questioning it’s change narrative, another commenter noted that the Governor has no prudence and his knowledge of fiscal matters questionable, He said:

“The government  is a terrible manager of funds. You know from time that the states allocation is not much yet he chose to spend billions of naira purchasing opon IMO , painting railway paths and other silly projects he know he can make money from while neglecting the state workers. The students too are not having the right education abi of what use is going to school without tests and exams.
May God deliver this country from this selfish change.”

“He has been mis managing osun state resources for the past 5 years even when they were collecting money regularly. Go and look at the wasteful senseless projects he spent billions of naira on in osun state. He has been borrowing money like mad for the past 4 years, apc state are the most indebted in nigeria. If lagos account is opened and made public people will (–censored–) tinubu. I have been saying this that states can develop themselves and make their states economically financially stable.the point is all these state govs are just plain lazy and rely on allocations every 5 weeks . The resources are there. This aregbe wasted tens of millions on a statue ,can u imagine that!!!!!”
Several other commenters seemed to generally agree that Fiscal Indiscipline hallmarks the APC style of government as the state of Osun’s finances and indebtedness to Civil Servants is replicated across many APC states including while others think the monies are being kept in a fixed deposit to generate interest for the Governor and the Party for campaign purposes, others argued that the State is broke as all indebtedness to the Party’s Financier and National Leader BOLA TINUBU money are being paid back through proxy contracts.

Similarly in Edo, Workers of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria expressed their grievance over the non-payment of salaries owed them by the Edo State Government. The workers were yet to receive their 2014 July salary as well as the January and February 2015 salaries, according to the State Chairman of the union, Uyi Ogieriakhi.

We have also gathered that doctors in Lagos, state are set to begin indefinite strike on Monday.

  6. This is why we need to decentralise government and diversification of the economy is in order! Let states find ways to increase their IGR instead of waiting like beggars every month for FAAC from this one cursed resource of Oil! Each and every single state has the potential to generate its own prosperous economy and sustain itself without help from the federal government. Unfortunately, everything has to be referred back to the center! I tire!

  18. Stella stop posting trash and be reasonable ... Edo state govt is not owing any worker. Judiciary staff are on strike in Edo state, how can your salary be paid when you are strike.. Their July 2014 was not paid because of the implementation of the no work, no pay policy. .. How come the state government is not owing other category of workers. By December last year Benue state govt was owing her staff 9 months till they borrowed money to pay 2 months salary .. The federal government did not pay her staff the salaries of November and December as at early January... Today 25 of the 36 states including PDP and APC are owing their staff because of shortfall arising from the drop in the price of crude oil and the mismanagement of excessive crude account.... 30. Not funny at all being a civil servant especially in Osun state. One begins to wonder how the families of these workers would be faring without salaries. This non payment of salaries is the sole reason why I refused to stay back Post NYSC even with the possibility of a job offer. It is well..

  40. It's about time Osun state workers protested! Haba! My mum has been working in Osun state all her life and for the first time, she has been complaining bitterly, I have to send her money weekly. She has been complaining since last year about not being paid and truly, he woes them about 5 months arrears. Even as a government owned school principal, she uses her own personal cash to run the school, she said sometimes, they even have to write exam questions on the board and get students to write their answers in papers torn from their books. Students have only a piece of uniform as their parents cannot even afford to buy them another one. It is frustrating. She just complained to me today again and that she has even been told that about 78 pensioners have died due to their inability to afford or pay for medicines for their health. People have resolved to stealing everything and anything and even petty traders have sold most of their wares on credit and are yet to receive payment from the Government workers. To think about 80% of the people living in Osun state work for the state Government and yet Aregbesola will come out to lie that he has paid. The guy is just a blatant liar and thief. Even the stupid ópon- imo'he claimed to give to all students, my mum as a principal hasn't for once seen it since it was announced, not to talk of her students having it. It has never been this bad before and the last time something similar to this happened was during Bisi Akande's tenure. People are dying and suffering. They went on strike and he announced that Rauf said he will sack any and all of them that do not return to work. Aregbesola is not a governor material o! Truth be told! It just hurts that he got elected again for second term after ass- licking.

  43. Why is this practice so commonplace in Nigeria? Even the Bible tells you that the worker must get paid. Good grief! If these ppl were Oyinbo they would pay them, and pay them more than Nigerians. How can Africa rise when the African worker is not valued in their own country? Should these ppl eat oxygen and drink spit for 5 months? Disgraceful on every level.
