Chibok Girls - One Year After But Still Not Forgotten!

Reverend Enoch Mark waited for his daughter as long as he could.
For half a year after Boko Haram gunmen snatched 17-year-old Monica from her dormitory in Chibok, he stayed on in the town even as militants repeatedly attacked it, hoping each day she might return.

“I wanted to run somewhere safe, but I had be there when she came back,” said the father of eight, whose family is among 276 others who suffered the same fate last April.

But the days trickled on with no news of Monica, and a year later Mark – no relation to this reporter – speaks quietly about his new reality.
“After six months I realised I had to move the rest my family somewhere safe, so we left Chibok.” He took a deep breath before continuing: “Also, I’ve accepted it isn’t possible that all our girls are still alive. But I’m a reverend. I’ve buried other people’s children, I carry out condolence visits. I have no choice but to be positive because if not, how can I encourage my own community?

The abduction that catapulted Boko Haram into the global limelight was just the tip of almost six years of carnage from a group seeking to impose a caliphate on Africa’s largest and religiously mixed nation. Countless other families have been left adrift in a limbo of uncertainty. According to Amnesty International, 2,000 women and girls have been abducted since the start of 2014.

But as historic elections this month ushered in a new government, many hope for a break from a past administration often shrouded in secrecy and public blunders in its dealings with the sect.

A key challenge for the incoming government of Muhammadu Buhari, a former dictator who crushed a similar religious sect during the 1980s, will be how it handles Boko Haram.
Outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan’s failure to decisively counter the threat was a key issue in elections this month, with gains by the Islamist movement forcing a six-week poll delay as a regional force launched a successful offensive to drive them back.

It has been battle-hardened troops from desert neighbours Chad, and to a lesser extent neighbouring Niger, that have taken the lead in expelling Boko Haram from the major towns in the north in just a matter of weeks.

Buhari appears to have learnt from the past. Within hours of winning, the president-elect’s first speech addressed the security situation head on.
Boko Haram will soon know the strength of our collective will. We should spare no effort,” he said. “In tackling the insurgency, we have a tough and urgent job to do.”

On Monday, crowds gathered in the capital, Abuja, to hold a rally to mark the anniversary of the Chibok girls. “Security, security, security – that’s all I’m asking from this government,” said Mohammed Salihu, a supporter who fled his north-eastern home-state of Borno to escape Boko Haram’s bombings last year.

For those caught directly in Boko Haram’s bloody dragnet, hopes are painfully high. “Buhari is a strong man, a military man. I know that had Buhari been president when our girls were abducted, they wouldn’t have been gone so long. I really believe that,” said Samuel Yaga, whose daughter Rebecca is among the missing Chibok girls. “I’m eagerly and honestly hoping for Buhari to bring them back.”

Still, the incoming administration’s key task may be not just holding onto but rebuilding the territories it has taken back from the militants. More than 1 million are scattered in camps across Nigeria and neighbouring Niger and Cameroon.

Ismail Gava, a resident of Gwoza, which the sect held as its headquarters until last month, said he welcomed Nigerian troops when they entered the town, but soon realised the biggest opportunity was a means to escape – previously forbidden when the town was under Boko Haram rule. “There are bodies rotting in the streets there. At least I can try to make a new life here,” said the farmer, who has since moved to a neighbouring state.

Meanwhile Mark, the reverend whose daughter is missing, has adopted a stoic tone, despite cautious optimism about Buhari.

“I was told my daughter refused to give up when they came for the girls; she said she will rather die than change [convert]. So they marked her,” he said.

“If really my Monica is dead because she stood up for herself, then I’m the proudest father and reverend in the world. And if she’s alive, I know she will come back.” - culled

Hmmmm....where ever they are,I hope they are safe and still alive.I dont know why i still find it hard to believe that over 200 girls were kidnapped and cannot be found...NO TRACE?
Its just shocking that this has happened!...Where are these girls and how many are they that they can be successfully hidden like sardine in tins for so ling?THIS IS SHOCKING!

  2. When International help came, Jona declined his help. When the Australian gave info about who's the sponsor of Boko, Jona said he didn't authorise him to investigate. Peshe said there were no missing girls...isn't that where we got our "na only you waka come" phrase?
Are we still hoping and praying for safe return of the girls? I don't think so. Well, i'm not...i'll just speak for myself.

    1. Just like the case in the Bible where a certain man was trampled upon because he doubted God's word during Elisha's time, that is how you will go missing when those girls come back. Amen

    2. Anonymous that is not a fair thing to say. On this one I support Jayem because these missing girls issue has left a bad taste on all our mouths. Especially that of doubt, would u blame the veracity of this matter when the power that be have shown lackadaisical attitude towards it, thus making a lot of people think that there are no missing girls?

Loudly the American troops arrived, we're given a triumphant entry in an attempt to savage the girls, but quietly they departed without a word.

Americans are known to be atop matters like this one, when it comes to terrorism, abductions, negotiation with terrorists etc. But they had nothing to say because the govt made things difficult with no tangible lead. And to save the Jonathan administration any further embarrassments they decided to keep mute with their findings. So who is to blame?

When the experts who have the wherewithal to do something have failed to see anything tangible. We talk about over 200 girls, not one girl that could have been kept where no one would find her.

Imagine the logistics of moving such a crowd of people from one destination to another without being caught or seen. My dear...ill keep referring to the Americans. It couldn't have happened in the U.S for such a number of people to be moved without being caught for one bloody year.

BH are not so sophisticated with their terrorism, hence would have been caught by the U.S. But the only logical reason for the U.s to have failed to see those girls is because they do not exist. Please prove me wrong and I'll tender my unreserved apologies.

I am a mother, hence cannot be castigated for being insensitive. I should know, but my maternal instinct would never allow me keep quiet for a year if my child was among the abducted. Where are the parents of the supposed missing girls! Why did they suggest a mass burial for thier kids, saying that they wanted closure? Excuse me?

The nigerian govt would have to prove to us a lot of things other than this myopic sentiments that make the entire citizenry appear foolish before the outside world. I rest my case

  3. Too bad... but I really dont see these girls coming back hale and hearty.. they are either dead or now suicide bombers. And no doubt they have been violated. Oh! I weep, I weep and weep for these one time innocent kids, for their broken parents and for the docile govt who thought they tried, but I swear, they did nothing...365days of absence, c'mon who stays abducted dat long and still remain sane..

    1. Obasanjo made a pertinent remark not too long ago. He said, and I quote, "those girls will not return".

Well, my interpretation is thus, no girls were ever missing. But he didn't want to incite the citizenry against Jonathan, hence the absoluteness in his conviction. I stand to be corrected though.

  9. Gen Buhari, order your boko haram pupils to release the chibok girls. We know the Muslim North used boko haram to destroy the Jonathan government and return power back to the north. The wicked aim have been achieved. There is no need holding those innocent girls any longer.

Now d enemy started fighting his own, they are scared .There is no way 200+ fowls will be moving n nobody will notice, not to talk of 200+teenagers. The people saw this movement, some reported but most kept quiet.

  19. I still find very hard to believe that this girls where kidnapped and disappeared without a trace of anything. Buhari want to counter Boko haram, was he not the person who sponsored BH during GEJ tenure just to frustrate him and tag him clueless and weak, the north has been a place of conflicts and insurgency, more than 5000 people women and children have been killed and many abducted. What is their reasons for the rebellion and terrorism is it a sharia state in Nigeria, will Buhari give in to their demand of islamazing Nigeria? Buhari have in a hand in the emerging of BH, let see how he will raid Nigeria free of the terrorist he and his cohorts brought and funded to Nigeria

  26. This chibok saga/ scam again...

How is it possible that the parents of 200+ girls have been strangely quiet while their daughters are not found? How come we never saw the parents in our local tv stations? How come the principal of the school and other teachers / care givers with them were not molested, kidnapped or killed?
How come we only hear of sightings but they have not been brought back? For some months now, we only hear the girls have been 'sighted', but they have not been returned. Just last month, it was in the news that the chibok girls were 'sighted' in Gwoza, the army took over the town after that report and no chibok girl was found. Again, we are hearing of another 'sighting' in same Gwoza. With each passing day I believe more and more that this chibok thing is a scam, and that there are no missing girls.World powers, America, Israel and co. came to help and all left quietly.... The whole situation does not just add up for me..
If they are really missing, I pray for their safe return, but if not, I pray that the evil minds behind the plot be brought to book.

    Sorry for the epistle, abeg.

    1. Thank u very much. No don't be sorry for the epistle because it makes absolute sense.

I might just add that, just after the postponement of the presidential elections, it was reported severally that some villages captured by BH had been recaptured by our soldiers.

Now, what I need to understand is what they mean by "recaptured"... as I do not understand the logistics. Is it that the BH held the town people hostage, therefore they were under them? And recaptured how? Did they arrest or kill the insurgents? If so where's the proof? Some quarters dismissed this story and passed it as false, saying BH was still ontop of the said villages. Whom do we believe? A govt that cannot prove such victory?

So why not recapture the girls if that be the case? Is it that our army are afraid of invading the territory where the girls are? But can conveniently capture some villages? I could go on with my cross examinations that beg for answers. Bottom line, nothing makes sense.
