Goodluck Jonathan And The Major Reasons He Lost The Nigerian Election ...

For the first time ever a Nigerian president has failed to win the popular vote. It’s a landmark for democracy, but where did it all go wrong for Jonathan?

Goodluck Jonathan misread the mood on the Chibok kidnappings and alienated all the wrong people.

For the first time ever a Nigerian president failed to win the popular vote. It’s a landmark for democracy, but where did it all go wrong for Jonathan?

Goodluck Jonathan has earned the dubious distinction of being the first president in Nigerian history to lose an election. In many ways, Jonathan was the architect of his own downfall. He made critical mistakes that turned the public and allies against him, and led them to gravitate towards the opposition. Here’s where it all went wrong:

  • 1. Don’t cross the boss
When Nigeria emerged from 15 years of military rule in 1999, Jonathan’s Peoples Democratic party (PDP) was formed by wealthy retired generals to inherit power from the military. One of the godfathers was General Olusegun Obasanjo, who has governed Nigeria twice (between 1976-1979 and 1999-2007).
Jonathan made the mistake of alienating Obasanjo; leading the general to write a public 18-page letter containing lacerating criticism of the president in December 2013. A party member likened Obasanjo’s hectoring of Jonathan to a father’s disappointment with his son. Rather than make peace with the 77-year-old, Jonathan’s office retaliated.
Getting on the wrong side of Obasanjo is the political equivalent of crossing a mafia don....... You will pay.

Obasanjo’s attacks on Jonathan intensified. In February, an irate Obasanjo quit the PDP and dramatically ripped up his party membership card on television.
Jonathan was naïve to think he could remain president without the support of PDP godfathers like Obasanjo. Although Nigeria is no longer under military rule, many retired millionaire generals call the shots from behind the scenes.

  • 2. Playing fair
Previous Nigerian presidents were too cynical to expose themselves to the unpredictable risk of a fair election. The election victories of PDP presidents during the past 16 years have been partially “assisted” by electoral malpractice. That changed when Jonathan nominated Professor Attahiru Jega as the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec) in 2010. Jega vowed to reform Nigeria’s electoral process to ensure free and fair elections.
The former university lecturer exuded calm authority and integrity. He has painstakingly prepared for the task over the past four years by studying the rigging methods used in previous elections, implementing an elaborate system of voter registration, training thousands of electoral staff, and introducing biometric readers to identify voters by reading their thumbprint.

Jonathan created the environment for the emergence of these changes and gave Jega the freedom and authority to conduct reforms that led to a credible election. But by giving Jega a free hand to play fair, he allowed Jega to craft the weapons that were used to oust him from power.

  • 3. Boko Haram and the Chibok kidnaps
When Boko Haram kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls from the town of Chibok in northern Nigeria, Jonathan failed to realise how much this would capture the public’s attention, both locally and internationally. His failure to speak about the kidnap for several weeks made him appear uncaring. These shortcomings were exacerbated by the behaviour of his wife, Patience, when she met the mothers of the kidnapped girls. Her ostentatious display and over-the-top emotions were mercilessly parodied.

Jonathan’s perceived casual indifference to the suffering of his people was compounded when he was photographed celebrating his niece’s lavish wedding just a few days after Boko Haram had killed 2,000 people in the town of Baga.

  • 4. Bad management
Jonathan’s relations with party members at times resembled a football coach antagonising his star players into leaving for rival teams. His tendency to fall out with colleagues simultaneously weakened his party and strengthened the opposition. He quarrelled with one after another; leading several of them to leave the party in frustration and join the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC). The alliance between these and the opposition shoved Jonathan out of power.

  • 5. Corruption and cronyism
Nigerians refer to their country’s resources as the “national cake” which must be shared by its citizens. There was a perception that Jonathan gave slices of the cake largely to members of his own community. Many powerful members of his government were from Jonathan’s region in the deep south of the country. Even Jonathan’s wife was appointed as a senior civil servant in his home state of Bayelsa.
Under Jonathan’s presidency many militant leaders from the oil producing Niger Delta area in the south have become very rich from government patronage and contracts. Some of them have been awarded security contracts to guard the oil installations they once protested against and attacked.

Jonathan has also pardoned a former ally accused of fraud and money laundering, increasing the cloud of suspicion hanging over his government.

These events caused deep resentment in other parts of Nigeria and created the impression that Jonathan ran a government that benefits those from his part of the country, the south, but not many others.
Jonathan even managed to get into a public feud with the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, the respected Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

In February 2014 Sanusi alleged that $20bn of Nigerian oil revenue was unaccounted for. Rather than investigating the claims Jonathan fired Sanusi for his impertinence at publicly hinting of government fraud.
Buhari’s victory is historic and unprecedented. However Jonathan was responsible almost as much as Buhari was.

Sadly enough this reporter hit the nail on the head. That feud with Obasanjo was it..When Obasanjo tore his national ID card publicly, that was it for Jonathan...but i am wondering why the people around him didnt tell him,why did they keep quiet and tiptoe off.

I hear stories of betrayal but the best news in all of this for me is that Diezani will finally respond to allegations of fraud and the Nigerian Millionaires she has allegedly chased out of Nigeria to the swiss can return home.

My respect still goes to Jonathan for bowing out respectfully despite the disgrace.

    2. Honestly Goodluck was surrounded by sycophants, they kept telling him lie upon lies, the same way the failed to deliver in all areas of the government and kept him in the dark is the same way they failed him during the elections, I am also grateful that that proud full of herself dieziani, is gone and will hopefully refund all she has looted..

    4. I agree with only no 3 and 5. The rest is utter gibberish, petty and irrelevant. Please let Jonathan be, the man has a lot to deal with at this time. If Una like cite 100 ways that can jona an election it has not reduce the price of garri in the market. The blame should not rest on Jonathan alone, PDP members destroyed whatever was left of the party the biggest culprit is OBJ himself very selfish, full of hypocrisy and narcissistic in nature. PDP as a party was fueled by greed and lust for power. Buhari should be wary of those whose quest is to gain power at all cost. In APC, they have the good, the bad and the very ugly and Jonathan's misadventures should serve as a lesson to Buhari. In the months ahead, Power play will be at its peak in the party and who gets what will be the deciding factor of who stays and those who will try to capsize and eventually jump ship.

    5. Very true. But Jonathan is just a victim. PDP became a sinking ship years ago. And it became obvious when the strife btw OBJ and Jonathan started. Clark being the main orchestrator of the strife. Granted that OBJ has his excesses, but people like Fani should have advised Jonathan that in this part of the world, u don't berate ur political father. It wouldn't have cost Jonathan anything to seek wisdom from OBJ when the crisis became pronounced. FFK worked with OBJ and he understands the practice well... but because of the small money he wanted during the election, he failed to advice Jonathan.

After baba tore his pdp card and Fani was interviewed, the idiot said that no matter what, he has utmost respect for OBJ and that after the elections they would go and make peace with him. Like seriously? What a dummy. Fani played games and was very careful about talking down OBJ in public. He knows he'll suffer for it.

He said and I quote " with or without OBJ Jonathan will win. We do not need obasanjo to win the election. That is why I say that we'll go and beg him after we win. We love him and he's our father, he'll forgive us". This was Fani talking o.

These were the things that made Jona fail. They advised him wrongly and he fell for it. OBJ isn't indispensable as far as Jona being president. For crying out loud u are a product of his governance, he produced u, how could he have survived without him?

As intelligent as Fashola is, as credible as his governance in lagos state, he still gives Tinubu utmost respect even though he doesn't completely agree with him. But Fashola as a smart man didn't let power get to his head to mess with his political back bone. That is why he will leave power honourably in a few months.

All them Abati and Okupe are instrumental to Jonathan's failed administration. We can't reiterate this fact enough.

    6. Fani was write when he said so. They forgot the product Jonathan was no longer attractive and had gone stale. Sisi who buys a bad product, Obj wouldn't have done any magic he was wise enough to jump a sinking ship. Trust me Baba knew change was inevitable.

As for Fashola, Tinubu wanted to upstage him but why change a good product and one which was very attractive. If Tinubu had done that may be Lagos state would have gone to PDP. This governorship race between Ambode and Jimi will be one to watch cos PDP out did themselves to present a more credible candidate.

Sisi don't take away the fact that people stood their ground to effect change.

    7. My political sisters Sisi eko & Lovelace. Thanks to both of you. That's the way to put up intelligent argument not kids running under comments to abuse their elders. Much respect to both of you and other lovely ladies like GW, Genny B,Ronalda, goldscent,my one and only Ezenwanyi who always stand even when others disagree and every other matured mind i forgot to mention. Una well done.

    8. You are right lovelace about Fashola. I remember just before his second term bid that he had a prolonged strife with Tinubu, the entire civil servants under him encouraged him to leave Apc and form his own party that they would follow him, and that he would still win. My dear if that happened he would have won, but Fashola was wise not to allow the praise get to his head. He decided to mend things with jagaban for the sake of the party and becos he felt that together, they could chase Pdp away. He knew that for him to leave would mean division in APC. This is what Jonathan didn't realise. He allowed himself be used to divide the party, and that was what killed him.

Fani wasn't right o, when he said they would win without baba, but they lost na.. if he didn't fall out with OBJ, 2011 would have repeated itself during this election u know.

The division GEJ caused was epic. And baba left not only because of him, but also because of the drug baron Kashamu. My dear they are a case study we can never finish analysing. Quite interesting ones too.

@Jaymoore, my brother I salute u. Keep the flag flying

      Delete
    9. And I might also add. As for Ambode and Jimi...again party affiliation will take preeminence. Watch how PDP will lose nationwide after they've lost centrally. At this juncture, people will careless about individual merits and demerits. Apc has become the "messiah' since Buhari's victory. Which will affect the gubernatorial elections. Funny enough, PDP won a number of seats in lagos state, but surely I think Ambode will floor Agbaje.

      Delete
    10. Sisi at this stance anything can happen, don't wish PDP away because APC won at the center. The news am hearing does not favour Ambode, most lagosians are tired of the grip Tinubu has on Lagos. Fashola had to swallow his pride to support Ambode, there were allegations leveled against Ambode which was swept under the carpet. Ambode does not have the charisma and charm like Jimi and most Lagos elite like Jimi. People will not careless as you think since they now believe their votes will count.

For Baba Obj, no magic from him would have saved GEJ, 2011 was not going to repeat itself even if he was still in the party. He knew what was going to happen that is why he jumped ship. Baba can't be seen loosing his political clout in the polity that will be bad business and image for him. You think he has forgotten the loss in his ward, it can't happen a second time that will spell disaster for him.

As you said this there matter can't be exhausted.

GEJ lost because of his gross non-performance, inability to read political handwritings, political naivety as demonstrated by his fights with OBJ, Amaechi and others, irresponsible comments made by Okupe, his wwife nd other attack dogs. Appointing FFK as campaign coordinator was the straw that broke the camel's back. Most stupid decision ever.

All I know is that, PDP thought it was going to be business as usual. The rigging didn't work. Nigerians stood and made sure their votes counted. Nigerians refused to be taken for fools. Nigerians had had enough and they reached that point where they realised, the minority cannot continue to ride on us (the majority), we should be the ones dictating.

All these analyses flying up and down, they don't mean shit!

  27. No 2: After the 2007 election that brought the late Yar'adua
in, he affirmed that the election that brought him wasn't credible
that he will do everything possible to bring development to Nigeria
electoral practice. In fulfilment to that, a committe led by
Justice Muhammad Uwais was established and Prof Jega was among.
That's how Jega materialize as INEC boss. It was all started by the
late Yar'adua and that credits should be adorn to him.

  28. Well everyone with foresight saw him going down. It is only those who close their eyes to the truth about the Nigeria state due to sentiment or benefit will deny all is well when they are same people suffering & smiling. You do not achieve a good governance when you surround yourself with bad advisers. OBJ helped him win election 4 years ago but bad advisers made him alienate OBJ who brought him to Aso Rock.
Where are our HIGH FLYER Pastors? So all their prayers did not come to pass right? Shame unto them. As they put their interest before a country. None came out to tell our leader the truth even when they know Nigerian is in bad shape. Yar Adua was dying in Aso Rock years ago none of our pastors & Imam who met with him was 100% honest with Nigerians but rather beating around the bush then. My respect goes to Rev Father Mbaka for being upright even under treat to his life, he should continue to speak out against the government that's part of his job.
Our problem in Nigeria is religion and tribe and we need to start placing TAX on churches and mosques. I wish our citizens will start to pray their way out and not depending on our men of "gods", they are only after your money. Tell me how people like Oyedepo will come out now and speak to the new president after all they did very sad.( please don't come with your touch not your anointed gimmick)
Churches bring citizens together but ours are just after their selfish interest. For those who are still upset about change it has come to stay so embrace it.
I wish outing going president peace and i wish my new leader the best of luck.

Jonathan, my former beloved Jonathan in 2010 when the Yadua's cabal failed to give him breathing space. Nigerians stood up against them. Kudos to Dora Akunyili of blessed memory( greatest Igbo woman) even in death. All of a sudden, hastily pardoned criminals, indicted thieves, pen robbers, indicted drug pushers and accused murderes were giving unlimited funds and transformed into your race's public face in the most brazen case of social engineering in recent memory. The public sphere of the south west/airwaves now belong to FFk ( Fani werepe), Ayo Fayose, Buruji Kashamu ( Esho Jinadu), Bode George, Iyiola Omisore. Awful list. Criminal indictment, past or present seem to be the singular qualification you need to catch the attention of Mr. Jonathan to pump money your way. Change has finally come.
