Doctors In House Section.

Na Baba God We dey look!.

PCOS SCARE

Please I want to ask the doctors in the house concerning a medical condition that has been really disturbing.. Last two years precisely I had high prolactin which caused me not to have my monthly period for three month, after seeing the gynaecologist and placed on medication,I started having my monthly cycle regularly.. fast forward to late last year my period was very irregular and early this year it stopped.. I went to the gynae again but this time my prolactin is normal only that my progesterone is quite low. Now I'm trying to conceive but it is not forth coming at all.. my gynae asked me to go for HSG test which am about to go for but my question is does this mean I have PCOS and will the HSG test boost my chances of conceiving.. i am sorry this is quite long but please I need answers am very disturbed and unhappy.

    1. You need to boost your progesterone level. It's a very important hormone in terms of fertility and maybe the reason why your period is irregular. Go back to the gynaecologist handling your case. She has your tests and can decide on a better treatment plan. But I won't be surprised if she places you on progesterone tablets like primolut .

    2. HSG is simply an X ray exam done by injecting a contrast medium via ur vagina throughd cervix into d womb and fallopian tubes in order to help visualise if u have any problem with your fallopian tubes or your womb. Depending on what the problem is, HSG usually can aid in conception, that is if your fallopian tubes are constricted, it can help open them up. But not in all cases. So I think d doctor simply wanted to check up on the fallopian tubes and your uterus in order to rule out any abnormality there before proceeding further...

  2. Why didnt you ask your doctors these questions? How can you seek answers from the net when your doctor could have done a better job of answering your queries? *SMH*

  3. U can't say u have pcos off hand.
A simple tvs would show if u have it..
The hsg is to check if ur tubes are open or not.

  4. Dont even know what those terms mean.
I wish you luck as you visit your gynae

  5. It doesn't mean you have PCOS. A HSG is a test done to ascertain if your tubes are patent or blocked. Blocked tubes will prevent you from getting pregnant

  10. It does not mean you have PCOS, thats a different test entirely the HSG is just to check to see that your tubes are not blocked. personally i would advice you go to a fertility clinic they are better than gynecologists.

  12. HSG really has nothing to do with boosting your chances of conception. It is just a test that will show the state of your tubes and further medication could be recommended depending on the result of the Test.

    2. I'm surprised that her doctor didn't explain this to her. Patients need to exercise their right to ask questions about their condition and treatment .

  13. Poster whenever u visit a doctor and a procedure is recommended for u to do, u have the right to ask all the necessary questions so u don't come here and sound clueless, I mean u paid for consultation. HSG is a diagnosis that uses xray to elaborate the fallopian tubes, it is essentially used to know if there is a tubal blockage. Depending on the findings, the Dr may go ahead and do laparoscopy. All the best, God is in control. Pls stop assuming u have this or that.

  14. All HSG does is to show how ur womb is, and also whether u fallopian tubes are alright. Your guess is as good as mine. I think u have PCOS cz those r d signs. Pls reduce your anxiety, it will only charge up your hormones. God will heal u, keep the faith just as bvs advised me.

  16. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common condition that affects how a woman’s ovaries work.
PCOS affects millions of women in the UK.
The three main features of the condition are:
cysts that develop in your ovaries (polycystic ovaries)
your ovaries do not regularly release eggs (ovulate)
having high levels of "male hormones" called androgens in your body
You will usually be diagnosed with PCOS if you have at least two of these features.
Read more about diagnosing polycystic ovary syndrome.
    What are polycystic ovaries?
Polycystic ovaries contain a large number of harmless cysts up to 8mm in size. The cysts are under-developed sacs in which eggs develop. Often in PCOS, these sacs are unable to release an egg, meaning ovulation doesn't take place.
It's estimated that about 1 in every 5 women in the UK has polycystic ovaries, but more than half of these have no symptoms.
    Signs and symptoms
Symptoms of PCOS usually become apparent during your late teens or early twenties. They can include:
irregular periods or no periods at all
difficulty getting pregnant (because of irregular ovulation or failure to ovulate)
excessive hair growth (hirsutism) - usually on the face, chest, back or buttocks
    weight gain
thinning hair and hair loss from the head
    oily skin or acne
Polycystic ovary syndrome is associated with an increased risk of problems in later life, such as type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol levels.
You should speak to your GP if you think you may have PCOS.

  18. HSG will diagnose if the problem is with your fallopian tubes or Uterus.
You could do a Transvaginal scan to check for PCOS.

  22. Obviously you have hormonal imbalance. It's possible you have PCOS but don't be in a hurry to make any diagnosis yet. Allow your Gyn do his/her job.
I had exactly the same issue, the low progesterone caused multiple early miscarriages until it was figured out. Presently pregnant and in my 2nd trimester with twins but I've bn on progesterone injections and suppositories since I got pregnant.
    Wish you the very best.
