The troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued an additional 234 women and children from the Sambisa Forest.

The Director, Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, said in a statement on Friday that the women and children were rescued by troops at the Kawuri and Kondua axis of the Sambisa Forest.

Olukolade said that the latest batch of rescued women and children had been moved to join those rescued earlier for screening.

“They have been evacuated to join others at the place of ongoing screening. This set in addition to the previous individuals earlier rescued during the ongoing operation in the area.

•••We Must Question Sources Of Rich Nigerians’ Wealth –Osinbajo

The Vice-President-elect, Prof.Yemi Osinbajo, on Friday explained how the Muhammadu Buhari administration would prosecute the anti-graft war, saying that Nigerians must question sources of wealth of the rich.

Osinbajo, while delivering the keynote address at the Abuja edition of The Platform, said the incoming administration would ensure zero tolerance for corruption by reforming the Justice system.

He said within the last few years, what the country had experienced was a situation where people got away with corrupt practices, noting that going forward; the incoming government would make sure that corrupt people suffer the consequences of their actions.

He said when people are made to suffer the consequences of corrupt practices; it would send a strong message to everyone that the era of looting of the treasury was over.

He said, “We have always talked about zero tolerance for corruption but it is also important that people are made to understand that there will be consequence for corruption.

“What we have seen so far is that there is hardly any consequence and people simply get away with it and if you get away with it often, it sends a message to everyone that there is no problem, and we need to fix that whole thinking that there has to be a consequence for corrupt practices.

“People have to explain, for instance, if you are a public servant, that how come you have 50 houses. Somebody needs to ask you those questions and some of the reasons people get away with that is our criminal justice system.”

He said in view of the fact that the incoming administration would be taking the fight against corruption seriously, one of the reforms that would first be carried out is in the judicial system.

The Vice-President- elect said the nation’s judicial system as presently constituted was slow, adding that this had made it easy for people to get away with criminal acts.

He said, “Our criminal justice system needs to be fixed. The system is slow and it almost always ensures that people who have been charged with offenses would not be tried forever and after a while people forget that people are on trial.

“We have to fix that criminal justice system to ensure that criminal trials are speedy and that anyone who is guilty of an offense will be punished for that offense.

“So there are so many initiatives around what we need to do in that area".

•••APC chieftain ‘Slaps’ Enugu Gov Candidate Over Ministerial Slot

A major crisis has hit the All Progressives Congress in Enugu State after report emerged on Friday that the APC National Vice-Chairman, South-East, Mr. Emma Eneukwu, allegedly slapped the party’s governorship candidate, Mr. Okey Ezea, following an argument over ministerial slot in the forthcoming Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.

The alleged incident happened on Thursday during a meeting of South-East APC leaders at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja.

It was gathered that the closed-door meeting was chaired by Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, and had Senator Chris Ngige, Senator Osita Izunaso, Gen. J. O. J. Okoloagu (retd.), and others in attendance.

Punch correspondent gathered that the alleged incident has thrown the Enugu State chapter of the party into confusion.

Some party members, who were sighted at the party’s state secretariat in Enugu, discussed the incident in hushed tones.

But they refused to comment on the matter when their views was sought.

  1. Stella and her questions!! !!
How many people were abducted in total you ask?
Because you don't follow the news
Because you think it's only Chibok girls that were abducted
For everytime they raid any community, they abducted women and children. They even abducted lots of kids from boarding school. They go to school and pick them up
Pick them up from their parents houses and
or is it because only the Chibok girls made headlines? A family member who lives in the north told me how her neighbours kids are yet to be found as they were abducted from school. They are Muslim's by the way. I only pity those who don't watch news and know what's happening around them. They only come here to claim no body is missing

My question is how come they are working this hard now to rescue all these people? This is what jona should have done since. It would have boosted his chances of winning

    BROAD DAYLIGHT ROBBERY

President Goodluck Jonathan, Vice-President Namadi Sambo, non-returning federal lawmakers, ministers and   presidential aides will collect N3.24bn as severance allowances, investigation by The PUNCH has shown.

The severance allowances are contained in the Remuneration Package put together by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission.

According to the package, Jonathan, who will hand over to the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, on May 29, is entitled to 300 per cent of his annual basic salary.

The President’s annual basic salary is put at N3, 514,705 and therefore his severance allowance will be N10,544,115 after May 29.

Similarly, Vice-President Sambo, who leaves office the same day as Jonathan, is also entitled to 300 per cent of his annual basic salary put at N3,031,572.50. This means that his severance allowance after May 29 is N9,094,717.50.

About 76 senators are not returning to the National Assembly either because they did not stand for election or because they lost their bids to return. They are however entitled to N462,019,200 at the expiration of their tenure on June 5.

Like Jonathan and Sambo, they are entitled to 300 per cent of their annual basic salaries as severance allowances. This amounts to N6,079,200 per senator.

Each of the House of Reps' members is entitled to N5, 955,637.50 as severance allowance. This means that the 290 members will be paid N1,727,134,875.

The ministers, on the other hand, will be collecting a total of N253,967,212.5. There are 42 ministers in Jonathan’s cabinet. Thirty one of them are senior ministers and 11 are ministers of state.

Each of the senior ministers is entitled to N6,079,200 severance allowance while each of the ministers of state will receive N5,872,740.

This means that collectively, the senior ministers will get N188,455,200 at the expiration of their tenure on May 29 while collectively, the ministers of state will be collecting N65,512,012.5.

The aides to the President comprising special advisers, senior special assistants and special assistants will get N775, 207,125.

There are 23 of them who work with the president as special advisers. Apart from this number, however, there are several others estimated at 110, who work with the vice-president, the First Lady(Patience Jonathan) and special advisers that are designated either as senior special assistants or special assistants to the President.

This means that there are about 133 aides to the president and each of them is entitled to 300 per cent of their annual basic salary which amounts to N5, 828,625.
