***Dino Melaye, Ben Bruce And Other Senators-elect Seek Reduction In Cost Of Governance

Some senators-elect have described as unacceptable the high cost of running government in the country, demanding immediate review so that the incoming administration of the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, can achieve meaningful development.

Specifically, the senators-elect, who spoke in separate interviews with our correspondent in Abuja, advocated a drastic reduction in the allowances accruable to top government functionaries and the lawmakers.

Ben Bruce (PDP, Bayelsa East), described as unjustifiable the fact that the National Assembly consumed three percent of the national budget.

Bruce said if leadership is by example and leaders live a humble lifestyle, billions of dollars would be saved to improve the lives of Nigerians and create enough jobs for the youths.

Bruce pledged to sponsor a bill that would seek to reduce the cost of running the government immediately after the inauguration of the 8th National Assembly.

Another senator-elect, Dino Melaye (APC, Kogi West), also pledged to champion the cause for a drastic reduction in the allowances payable to lawmakers after the inauguration in June.

He said, “I am actually championing the cause of a cut in our pay. There is a need to cut down our pay because if we talk about change, there is the need to demonstrate that change. We must sacrifice as legislators.

“Nigerians are going through a perilous time. That change is to cut down our own pay and remuneration. So instead of increasing our earning, we should enhance the committees to start proper oversight functions.

***Buhari will shock Nigerians –APC chief

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress and the party’s senatorial candidate for the Akwa Ibom North-West senatorial district, Chief Inibehe Okori, has said that the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, will shock critics with his pronouncements on May 29.

Speaking in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, on Sunday, Okori stated that Buhari would prove to Nigerians and the international community that corruption would be checked as soon as the president-elect settled down to work.

He added that Buhari’s proclamation, dedication and discipline will go a long way in restoring hope, faith and confidence of the citizens in the country.

He said, “Unlike other presidents who were not prepared for leadership but foisted on the country by individuals and interest groups, the President-elect has consistently presented himself to the electorate to lead the country on four occasions and had his visions well enunciated.

***Death Toll In Plateau Attack Rises To 39

The death toll in the clashes between some villagers and soldiers in three villages of Kadarko, Kurmi and Wadata in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State has risen to 39.

Soldiers said to be on reprisal in over 40 trucks were said to have arrived the villages on Saturday and killed the villagers.

The soldiers’ action was said to have been informed by reports of alleged killings of four soldiers at Angwan Nanmi, Karin Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State by the villagers.

The traditional ruler of Ponzhi Kadarko, Chief Lot Nde, told Punch correspondent that the death toll could still rise as soldiers, with armoured tanks, had pursued some villagers into the bush where many of them were shot and killed.

He said that the entire villages had been razed.

***APC Govs Meet Buhari On Ministerial Nominees Tuesday

Governors of the All Progressives Congress are meeting with the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, in Abuja on Tuesday, The PUNCH has learnt.

The meeting, it was gathered, would be the first to be attended by the governors jointly since the conduct of the March 28 presidential election which Buhari won.

One of the governors, who spoke on the condition of anonymity with Punch correspondent Sunday, said that the meeting would also be attended by all the APC governors-elect.

He said, “The APC governors, serving and incoming, are to meet GMB (Buhari)on Tuesday morning in Abuja to pay a courtesy call on him, formally congratulate him on his electoral victory and make input into the policy direction of the administration ahead of the May 29 inauguration of the new government.
