Girl Commits Suicide In Abia After Her Mother Blamed Her For Being Gang-raped

OMG OMG OMG!!!

A JSS 3 student of Isieke Community Secondary School who had just finished writing the “Junior WEAC” exam, was allegedly raped by three boys; Ndubuisi Wogu, Chinaza Ufomadu, and Francis Onwoboro, who are now on the run.

The deceased, Comfort Uche-Ume, a native of Amaeke Abam in Arochukwu LGA of the state, who until her death resided at Iyienyi village with her parents, had gone in the company of her sister who was married at Okwoyi, a neighbouring village, to see her (sister) husband.

He said that as evening approached, the deceased opted to return home to remove the clothes they spread outside to save them from getting wet from the threatening rain.

But another source said the deceased decided to return home because she was having the key to their house so that the parents who travelled would not be stranded upon their return.

The PPRO said that as the deceased was trekking back to Iyienyi village alone, she was allegedly accosted by Nwogu, who had been making unsuccessful advances at her.

He said Nwogu, assisted by two other accomplices, dragged the victim to a nearby bush where they gang-raped her, threatening to kill her if she raised any alarm.

Police said that when the sister of the deceased returned home, she met her crying and after enquiries, Comfort narrated her ordeal to her.

Irked by the sexual assault on her sister, she was said to have informed her husband, who quickly rushed to confront one of the suspects and engaged him in a free-for-all.

According to the police, the victim was later brought to Umuahia Central Police Station around 9pm by her parents to officially report the matter.

Onyeke said after lodging the complaint, the police first decided to take the victim to the police clinic for examination and medical attention.

He said after she was examined and the police wanted to take her statement, but the parents pleaded that they should be allowed to take her home, promising to return the next morning since it was getting late so that they could still get transport home.

The incident, according to him, took place Friday last week.

“But instead of returning as they promised, the parents never showed up. The mother of the deceased rather decided to scold her over the incident.

“The mother mismanaged the situation. She said to her ‘Have I not warned you not to go to Okwoyi village alone? Now three men have raped you and if you become pregnant, who will be the father of the baby?’

“On Tuesday morning, the mother of the victim allegedly went to her room again and started talking to her. She later invited her for the family’s morning devotion, but she declined,”

The state police spokesman pointed out that when the family began to hold their morning devotion about 20 minutes later, a shout was heard outside the house and the family members rushed out.

According to him, the initial thinking of family members was that the rapists had come to attack her again.

But that was not to be as they were shocked to their marrows to see the lifeless body of their daughter, who was reportedly seen leave her room with a head tie/ veil across her shoulders, dangling on a guava tree beside their house. She had committed suicide!

Police said the deceased might have decided to take her life out of frustration and possible stigmatisation.

The PPRO, therefore, advised parents and guardians to exercise caution when “they manage sensitive situations that might come their way, especially the ones affecting their children or wards.”

He said, “Parents should avoid stigmatising their children, but treat them with love anytime such unfortunate situation comes up.”

Onyeke also appealed to members of the public with any credible information about the whereabouts of the alleged rapists to volunteer same to the nearest police station for prompt action.

Meanwhile, a source at Okwoyi told our correspondent that the villagers had begun a manhunt for the suspects.

The source said hunters had been mobilised to comb every nook and cranny of the village for their possible arrest.

According to the source, the villagers are not taking the incident lightly, vowing to stop at nothing in bringing the culprits to bok.

“This is an abomination and we will make sure we fish them out of any hole they may have run into,” the source said.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ezekiel Onyeke said the police had declared the suspected rapists wanted.

    3. Oh wow! This is the exact thing I was arguing about with my husband yesterday, when someone was telling her story on the radio and he was like ehn ehn why is she just talking about it now and I gave this exact example of how some mothers handle it badly when I child tells them they have been molested and he thought I was overreacting and taking it too personal. Can't wait to share this with him.
This happens alooooot in this naija, the difference is that not all children go to the extreme and commit suicide but most them are hurt for life.. just sad! May her soul RIP

    4. A little girl once told me how two guys raped her. She was 8 then. I was 15. I felt so bad. She told me they threatened to kill her if she told her brothers and she didn't. She told me and I couldn't tell anyone too. I cried with her and prayed for her also encouraged her. I didn't know what to do. What tormented me was the fact that I was still a virgin and she is no longer a virgin. It was so painful back then. I still hurt for the incident till now. I wonder how she will be feeling now. I've not seen her in years tho but we are all grown now cos I'm now 30.

    2. Shut up, how did she push her to her death? She warned her against going to that village alone and u expect her not to mention it? Who told u she doesn't love her daughter? She was angry het disobedience led to the incidence but that cannot mean she blamed her for the rape....stop judging cos u were not there... Nothing warrants sucide

    1. What kind of mother is this?

She was even stressing on the possibility that the child could get pregnant, what about the psychological trauma the girl was going through at the time?

This is so annoying. Now she will be the one to suffer the trauma of losing a child.
      Poor girl, RIP.

    1. Don't forget that some village women have limited exposure to certain things and reactions. She didn't know any better. Really doesn't make her a bad mother, her approach is what has caused this to happen.

    2. Thank u @sisieko. Let us remember that the wwoman probably has little or no exposure nd education. I'm sure no mother would wish rape on her daughter and death, but at the time, mama felt scolding the child was the best thing. Not everyone's EQ is high!

    3. Stop the hypocritical bullshit.... You warn a child against something n they disobey n u say they won't scold her? It's allowed... She killed herself cos of her own weakness...the mother was expressing her fears about the incidence so don't believe she blamed her for being raped abeg

  8. Sad!. That was how a young boy drank poison nd die over here, because his mother always sides the boy's elder sister anytime he had an arguement with her.

Parents should be careful with things they say to their children o. Some people are weak in the heart

  9. Imagine.... Her own mother couldn't console and make her feel better! Smh! Sometimes,I wonder if some women are fit for motherhood...

Some would beat thr own ward like no tomorrow,a child you're suppose to sit down ,have a hrt to hrt with...

Problem of stigmatizing strts from home.... Its tht bad. If you have a certain problem and ur immediate family accept you, show you love, it doesn't matter wat someone else outside say or do. You know you have love at home.

    Rip girl!

  19. Mothers!!!

When she should have encouraged her, supported her and ensured the culprits are punished, she was yarning dust about pregnancy. Are doctors not supposed to give rape victims pills to prevent pregnancy?

Most rape victims will rather die with the trauma than talk. People say stuff like, what were you doing there? what did you wear? you are lying, it was consensual, bla bla bla.The victim always gets the blame and faces more humilation.

May her soul rest in peace.

Over the years, i've always hated my mum coz of that singular act but after the death of my dad, av been struggling to 'like' her. Sometimes I wish my dad was still alive. Tho he was a strict man but his love alone can make you melt and come closer to him. Popsy, I will always love you, from here to the moon and back. 33. "Why children don't tell when sexually abused ".

    Fear of not being believed.

A teenage girl once said to me "I will never tell my mum anything again". She gathered up courage and reported a case of sexual abuse by her uncle to her mum, but was rebuffed.

Children always feel that they will not be believed when they report an abuse. Unfortunately many parents, guardians and teachers do not help matters by their attitude towards this silent epidemic. Some feel and even say it aloud that a victim is lying or making up stories. Most children speak the unpalatable truth when they disclose an abuse.

How do you react when a child reports an abuse? An adult should show a sign of believe to a child first before any other reaction. Let the child know that he or she will get help immediately. This will further encourage the victim to disclose any other information. Please treat such information with utmost confidentiality! Imagine her own mother whom is suppose to be a model to her daughter help in sending her to her early grave! Mama hope u are now happy? How on earth will you blame a rape victim!!! Who told you its her fault to be raped! Do u for once realized that that child need love and cares at this stage!! Will u forever see her again? You must face God for your answer. I feel like giving u a dirty slap to reset you brain. A very big lesson to all.

  44. Very sad. Its actually a lack of understanding and empathy on the part of the mom who also MAY have been traumatized into that level of insensibility. She handled the issue very wrongly.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Talk about a double tragedy to happen to someone so young and innocent. Perhaps, it was her mother's disconcerting words and attitude, after a most horrifying experience, that broke the camel's back. Perhaps, it was the attempt to keep the incident hush, hush and pretend it never happened; perhaps, it was the absence of a strong, yet, loving embrace to assure her all would be well in time and with proper interventions. We will never know. However, we know the beasts that dehumanised her are out there in the community and must be apprehended asap; we know from our gut feelings, these beasts must be castrated or locked up, never to see the sun again both as punishment and a deterrent to other looming rapists/beasts in the community. We also now know, starting from the homes, Naija boys must be brought up to respect the entirety of the female girl/woman. To do otherwise, is #goodcausefortrouble

    ReplyDelete
  49. The mother didn't do anything wrong. She warned her daughter never to walk alone on that path for obvious reasons. She neglected the advice of her mother. And she chided her. Big deal. The mother did the right thing. It is unfortunate the girl committed suicide. But don't blame the mother

    ReplyDelete
  50. I hate the woman right now, just like I hate my mom. I could kill if I set my eyes on her. Wicked woman. She should be arrest Along side the boys because the boys are guilt of rape and she is guilt of murder. SHE WILL DIE A HORRIBLE DEATH, USELESS WOMAN!
