Hope Gave Me My Baby...

“Some women seemed to get pregnant just by smiling at their spouses, but mine was different. I wondered what I had done wrong to deserve this”

Dear Mommies,

Here is my story that I am so happy to tell. A story that I always want to give glory to God Almighty for and hopefully encourage couples trying to have babies.
After a happy wedding, you never think that babies will not come once you are ready. My first two years were carefree.

"No worries...I’m not yet ready... It’s fine...” was what I kept thinking.

Two and a half to three years rolled by, and my "well meaning" friends and in-laws started asking questions.
Then it was no longer fine. No longer a carefree situation as I had thought.

What next? It was so difficult and at times embarrassing, seeking help.

It made me feel like an incomplete woman. Some women seemed to get pregnant just by smiling at their spouses, but mine was different. I wondered what I had done wrong to deserve this.

The truth is infertility is not a personal problem, because no matter how private you try to make it, your neighbours know your problem too!

In conclusion, I’d say there’s no "privacy" in infertility.

After years of battling in silence, my spouse and I decided to take the first step and go for our first IUI called intrauterine insemination, which is a form of assisted conception.
We took that step with such high hopes that were sadly dashed. Then we had another, and another, and another... all the pregnancy tests came out negative. I felt crushed.

I heard about another specialist, and we decided to give it a shot. This came with another round of tests, IUIs and another series of pregnancy tests, which came out negative.

By this time, all hope was slipping away.

“Will I ever be called mommie?” I knew how desperately my husband wanted to be a dad and I felt so sad for him.

It was then, when I was at my lowest ebb, a specialist recommended IVF.
IVF is a costly procedure with such slim odds, and the chance of success is only about 40%.
We knew all we had left was just hope. And I guess that was enough.

So, with great trepidation, we went down the route.

Injections, scans, retrieval, transfer and the two weeks of waiting for the results felt like years. Then the pregnancy test finally came.

It was POSITIVE!

That was the first positive pregnancy test in my entire life! It felt so good. So amazing! So fulfilling! I will finally be a mom. I had my first scan. My baby had a strong heartbeat!

However at my 6-8week appointments and scan, there was no longer a heartbeat.

How? Why? I became inconsolable. But thank God, he pulled me through it. That’s all I can say.

Somehow, after all this, I was looking through a newspaper that fateful morning when I stumbled upon a piece from one of the popular fertility clinics in Ikoyi, Lagos. Immediately, I decided to plan a visit to the place. What I met were warm, friendly loving nurses and staff.

Each person I met listened and identified with me as an individual, especially the Doctors.

Everyone just seemed to care. It felt like a safe place to be and I was happy.

At this point, another IVF was recommended. All through the process, the support from everybody at clinic was remarkable; they even have a professional counsellor. The embryologist sat with me after the transfer and we had a nice long chat that successfully got my mind off worrying.

Another 2 weeks wait...

And yes! Thank God, I got a positive pregnancy test result!!!
This time, a gorgeous little girl appeared at the end of 9 blissful months. It is a good feeling unlike any other.

And I say a big thank you to God for giving men the knowledge to treat infertility. I hope this fertility centre won’t ever lose that personal touch that sets them apart from all the other clinics.!

God bless you!

Stella remember I wrote here first about this clinic. They are very good n their staffs r polite n highly trained. They make u feel at home every step of the way. Yes IVF is expensive but they had payment plans when I used them 3years ago. So u can save up for the procedure. My babies will be three this November.

    2. Sorry dear, maybe when you get pregnant again your hubby should give you a break for the first three months, and don't stress yourself during that period. It might sound like a 'midwives' tale, there's no harm in trying. Not forgetting prayers and positive mindset.
