Justice For 2 Year Old Shawn Essien Who Died By The Doctors Needle...

ATTENTION - NIGERIAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
CC - MINISTRY OF HEALTH LAGOS STATE.

Two year old Shawn was a sweet Little Boy who would look up at his mum and say ''Mummy you are so beautiful'' and then he would turn his Chubby face to anyone who is watching and tell them how beautiful his mum is......Little Shawn lit the light in his mothers eyes..He was her world.
She is currently in tears.....Shawn Died due to Negligence....
Little is no more...Read the story sent in by Shawn's mum after we talked on the phone....

''Good Day, My name is Lillian obiageli Essien and I decided to bring my story to Stella's blog so that Nigerians can join me and my family in the quest to get justice for the death of our beloved son Shawn, from a certain Dr Vitalis the Chief Medical Director and owner of DE VITAL CARE HOSPITAL,Babalola bus stop in Ilogbo, Ojo local govt area of Lagos State.

On the 9th of December 2015,I took my 2year 5months old son to the above named hospital for treatment. My child had been restless all night. He had practically hallucinated all night and had woken up weak and with a bit of yellowness in his eyes.

We hurriedly left the house very early in the morning and got to the hospital a few minutes past 7am. They inserted a canula, took his blood and put him on iv fluid Immediately the blood had been taken. I asked the Dr why the iv was given and what drugs were being injected into the iv,since the results of the tests weren't out yet. And my son wasn't stooling or vomiting either. He murmured B-complex and walked away.

About an hour later, the said doctor walks back into the room and I asked him if the test results were out and what the results of the tests were, he said he would be back and walked out again. He kept coming in and going back out of the room without telling me what the results were. This got me very worried. I started to feel something was horribly wrong with my son, and that was why he didn't want to tell me what the results were. The next time he came into the room my son was, I told him I demand to know what the test results were and he said it was acute malaria and his PCV was 18% and that he MIGHT be needing a blood transfusion.

A nurse came in and put in another IV fluid. I asked her what it was and she said saline. The doctor came in and met the nurse and I talking and explained that the saline will wash away the yellowness from my son's eyes. My son became very restless when the 2nd iv fluid got half way and it seemed like he was trying hard to breathe.i asked the 3 nurses that came into the room if they had a nebulizer but they all didn't seem to know what a nebulizer was. They said I shouldn't be scared that it's the malaria parasites that is making him so restless.

They kept assuring me that by the next morning,he will be just fine.
Immediately the 2nd IV finished, the Dr came in and asked the nurse to insert a 3rd IV. By this time I noticed my son's belly seemed like it was filled with water and his arms and feet were double its size. I called the Dr and he came in and said I should stop worrying that as long as my son was passing out urine,he was OK. He kept assuring me my child will be just fine.

The 3rd IV finished and they put in a 4th. My son seemed to be finding it so hard to breathe. The Dr came in again and I asked him exactly what all the iv fluid was for. That my child wasn't stooling neither was he vomitting that I don't think he needs anymore IV fluid. I asked him if all the IV fluid wasn't diluting my son's 18% blood, since all the fluid is flowing through my son's veins . He retorted "Ahn Ahn! Are you a medical personnel!? The drip cannot dilute your son's blood!"

He left the room immediately and less than a minute later a nurse came in and said the Dr asked her to take out the IV. My father in law was present in at least 14 hours out of the 16 hours my son spent in Dr Vitalis's hospital. They kept giving the both of us assurance that Shawn would be just fine and the fluid retention in his body and the restlessness was just a passing phase. That his body was only fighting the malaria parasites.

At about 10.33pm,the Dr came into the room and I said "Dr please help me. My baby isn't getting any better" and he replied "madam pray to God to help you!".

He said he has decided to transfer my son and he wrote a referral letter for me to take my son to another hospital. My son had started gasping and his eyes seemed to have gone right into its sockets and looking even more yellow. The doctor's last sentence to me before I left DE Vital Care hospital was "This boy is a strong boy". Smh

We got into the isolo general hospital, at past 12midnight. The Dr on call seemed shocked after reading the referral letter. I remember him murmuring "what kind of stupid Dr administered this medication to a child".He immediately put my son on oxygen and my son passed away in my arms after about 2 minutes.

2 weeks later I got a call from a certain Dr Vitalis. He said he was the owner and medical director of the hospital where my son was treated. And that he was calling to apologize for the incompetence of his staff, which led to my son's demise. He asked if I could send my address, so that he can come and apologize face to face and pay condolence.

He came over a few days later, with a member of his staff called Jerry. According to Dr Vitalis, on the day I brought my son to his hospital, he had a court case in Ijebu-Ode and left a certain doctor in charge. The doctor in charge had to go for Shiloh 2015(winners chapel church convention/crusade),and invited a Dr friend of his, to come and take his place in Dr Vitalis's hospital.

According to Dr vitalis, the Dr whom treated my son wasn't a doctor in his hospital. He was just a friend to the doctor that was meant to be on call. Dr vitalis went ahead to explain to us (my mother ,my husband and I) how a nurse had called him to explain the situation at the hospital and how it was him whom ordered that my son should be transferred to another hospital, because he didn't want my son to pass away in his hospital. According to him, with the explanations the nurse who called him gave, he knew his staff had 'messed' up, and it was 'too late'.

Dr Vitalis promised to bring the Dr who attended to my son to come and 'apologize' for his mistakes. My husband asked him what the doctor's name was and he claimed he didn't know. That when he came back from ijebu-ode and heard the entire story of what happened he 'beat the hell out' of the doctor and asked him never to come close to his hospital.

He never brought the Dr to apologize.

This Dr Vitalis was unwilling to give out his surname he insisted he will like to be called just 'Dr vitalis' .He point blank refused to disclose his surname but I did my own little investigation and found him on facebook as Vitalis Nwikwu Mezie. I also found a certain news on the internet regarding medical malpractice and a certain Dr Vitalis. I do not know if it's the same Dr Vitalis that is being referred to,however I have posted the link belowhttp://thenationonlineng.net/police-arrest-two-fake-medical-doctors/.

This Dr vitalis Mezie does not 'appear' as a medical doctor. I understand that doctors do not have a certain 'look', but his mannerisms and spoken words are very dodgy and suspicious . I have strong doubts that Dr Vitalis is a licensed medical Dr and his hospital is registered. I also have very strong doubts that the Dr whom treated my son is a licensed medical Dr and Dr Vitalis's claims that he doesn't know the name of the Dr or how to reach him, further fuels my suspicions. It's quite obvious he wants to ensure the Dr stays 'invisible and anonymous'.

I will like the medical association, the Nigerian police and the general public to ensure that justice is served and to please help investigate this man and his hospital,to avoid more lives being lost to either carelessness ,negligence or a forged medical license/certificate,and also to avoid any human being passing through the emotional pain and trauma I am currently passing through due to the death of my only son.

  DOCTOR.VITALIS

Stella,i just wanted you to know this, cos I know how insensitive some people can be. I know some people might think that I am seeking for attention or trying to get some sort of compensation for what happened to me.
Nothing can replace my son. Absolutely  NOTHING! No one and nothing can soothe this pain or replace my son. it's just impossible! Even if I bear 5 more children, they can NEVER  take his place. But this is what can happen, if we join hands together and make sure  that the doctor that treated my son is brought to book, and hopefully other quacks too will look for other jobs to do and cease from pretending to be medical doctors, then nobody would have to go through this pain. It could happen anybody. but it  just has to stop. it might not be immediate but a stitch in time saves lives.
Nobody deserves to go through this. I'm doing this for everyone that has ever died as a result of medical malpractice/negligence . I'm NOT doing  this for a kobo, to be popular or to tarnish any body's image.

# justiceforshawnessien.

Thank you

    1. Couldnt bring myself to read this when I saw it in the papers. Some of these hospitals are just death traps. This is so sad. Imagine leaving your duty post to attend Shiloh? Irresponsibility. The Bible says faith without works is dead! If not for that lapse, this child might still be with us.
      Sigh. God have mercy.
May the Lord heal your family and may Shawn find justice. So sorry

    3. Look at the doctor's face, he looks a quack doctor anyway. Read this days ago and I just shuddered. This is pure negligence.. they wasted too much time administering the wrong medication on the post child. Imagine the agony of having to watch your child die in your arms. Especially when you knew something was wrong and they kept dismissing it. This is unfair and sad. They should be prosecuted and that bloody hospital closed down.

It is a terrible thing to lose a Child and i am proud of you for choosing find closure n justice. To many useless & negligent pple in the country.
Abroad when u go for treatment they tell u everything they r using to treat u before u ask. Many Nig Drs expect u to beg for the information before they tell u and wont even explain well.
I remember when my Child went to Mother &.... adeniyi jones. she was on iv and it finished and was pulling her blood into d drip, no bell to call a nurse upon their exhorbitant fee, i ran out to call a nurse and she told me point blank that cant i see she is sleeping? Chei. I was shocked. They gave me a discount the next day but that is the last time i stepped my foot in that hosp.
Nurse dey say she dey sleep when my 2 yr olds blood was being pulled into the tubes.

    9. **poor child** I meant.

Meanwhile reading the confessional statement that the doctor supposedly said to you, if indeed he admitted to it that the mistake was from them because an unknown doctor took over from another, then you are good to go legally. You said he told you this in the presence of ur mother and hubby right? Get yourself a good lawyer and he'll be sent behind bars for a long time. But my worry is that he's denying he ever mentioned this to you.

And I'm also wondering how in the face of the tragedy he was benevolent enough to take the blame for the baby's demise. Kinda rare, as we all know that the average Nigerian will never accept such blame so easily. That's the only bit I find rather strange. Hmmm

    19. OMG, may God deliver us from the hands of quack doctors, I was 8 weeks pregnant when I started spotting, we quickly rushed to a nearby hospital and maternity. I was admitted by the nurse who called d doctor and he said that he's coming, that they should put me on drip, they put drip and told me the doctor was coming, from dat early morning until 9pm when I left d hospital in anger, d Dr did not show up and by then I was bleeding considerably. I lost the baby and later he apologised to my husband that he was held up somewhere and said i should come for an evacuation, only God knows what he did bc for the nest 8 months no period.

After different treatments my period came but its now very scanty and its been 5yrs since then I am yet to take in again. The hospitals we've been to says my womb was overscrapped by him. Is dat not a quack doctor, yet he calls himself gynaecologist, am sure if he's investigated he might nit have graduated from medical sch
Quack doctors have killed so many and maimed others for life. I just pray for Gods healing and solution for myself and others that doctors want to render barren.

    3. I can bet my life that this man is no doctor. Please NMA, ask for his License.
Part of The reason for the last NMA strike was because the jonathan Administration gave accreditation for homeopathic doctors who have no medical degree to practice. They now forget that greed will not allow them to refer cases to main hospitals because they want to prove a point that they are better than doctors. They also train their people and for whatever reason, most of them seem to have money and set up hospitals answering medical doctors.
Unfortunately, nigerians thought it was all about the salary increment. They don't know anything yet their ego is as big as a mountain.
If he doesn't have anything to hide, why go visit the woman at home and claim all these nonsense.
Let him be investigated and revealed if he is a medical doctor or a homeopath.
Nigerians, please try and find out if the hospital you are visiting is a homeopathic hosp or not. They will never identify and if you ask them, they get overtly angry. Please, if you cannot visit a public hospital, take time and verify the certification of the hosp. Most doctors Display their Certificate in the hosp reception as mandated by the Nigerian Medical Association but most times we might be such in a hurry not to look.

Once, I took my daughter to hospital here in PH, the owner of the hospital, whom I'm familiar with, was not around, and the doctor on duty recommended she should be placed on drip. His incompetence was glaring, as he searched for her vein for more than thirty minutes, piercing needle in parts of her body. I was already very angry when he finally found a suitable spot. Finally, she was on drip, but I was so uncomfortable that I told the nurse to remove the drip, that I was taking her home. When she did, I left with her to another hospital, after a heated argument. That was when I had peace. I just realized that this is one of the blessings I should be thanking God for. What if the contrary had been the outcome. OMG! I wish this handsome little man followed his mummy home. May his gentle soul rest in peace, Amen. Mummy Shawn, please take heart. God knows best. May the days you spent together also comfort you, and may Jesus heal your wounds.

  56. This is heart wrenching, I do not have a child yet, so i can only imagine what this mummy went through, watching her baby in the hands of the incompetent doctor. Medicine is a noble profession and most of the time, doctors do not get recognition for their hardwork. Now some quack mofo just came in to destroy this beautiful young life. Please o, the relevant medical bodies need to look into this. Some private hospitals employ under qualified staff and nurses and this may have been one of such cases. This is terrible.

  57. That md is just trying to cover up,i knew I had seen this doctor before now,he works at Ilogbo.
There was a case referred to my hospital,a preterm baby delivered via ceasarian section done by this same doctor, though the woman died, and details of intra/post-op was sketchy.
Now he is in the news again.....

  59. Condolences madam. It can never be easy losing someone. How much more someone you've nurtured. This story reminds me of the death of my friend who died with her baby owing to the careless ness of doctor(s) in a private hospital. I really don't use private hospitals. I'd rather endure the insults from the nurses in government hospitals. What's the point where if your case gets more severe they still refer you to these same government hospitals eventually. There are several doctors who can put their heads together and come up with an accurate diagnosis. In most of these so called private hospitals one doctor will be the gynaecologist, paediatrician, urologist, dermatologist. Nurses are not qualified nurses. Folks if you must use a private hospital make sure it's not just one mushroom hospital.

The NMA is asleep. Otherwise why do we have quack doctors all over the place?

I really hope this story is investigated and those involved brought to book.it's a sad one. The little boy was such a cutie. May God rest his soul and may God console you madam.

    2. Please if you can not afford a five star private hospital in Nigeria go to government hospital, it's much better than the mushroom private hospitals we have especially in big cities like Lagos and PH. A lot of lives have been lost in this so called private hospitals May God deliver us. The ministry of health in all states should be proactive and help to stop this menace.

For all you quacks, even those that went to medical school and managed to graduate without a good understanding of how to tackle issues, please seek help when you don't know what to do. Better still, refer the patient to a more knowledgeable doctor or hospital immediately.

  63. This would have been my story 6yrs ago, I had stomachache, and I went to a private hospital only to be placed on admission and drip administered to me. They did not collect my blood sample but they had I had typhoid and malaria. Is the doctor a witch? How did she know I had typhoid and malaria even without running test on me?
I spent the night in the hospital and in the morning I discharged myself... (Lol) My mum had to wait to clear the hospital bills and they gave her the remaining drugs. I refused to take the drugs given to me but my parents insisted that I take, after taking the drugs I fainted oooo..
Its so disheartening that we live in a careless society where even cases like this are thrown out by the courts.. Its high time we begin to make reviews of hospitals and expose fake hospitals.
May the Holy Spirit comfort you madam.

    1. You don't necessarily need to do a malaria test to treat malaria, moreso because we live in a malaria endemic zone.Tho i can't make the same statement about typhoid fever, because in my few years of practise, i haven't seen a real case of typhoid fever.Because of the substandard labs around and the wrong information from tradomedical persons, every flu-like symptom is now typhoid, its difficult trying to convince the patient that he or she doesn't have typhoid, so the doctor obliges for you to run a widal test.,because no matter what the patient is told,he/she doesn't believe he doesn't have it.

      Delete
    2. And the fact that you fainted after taking the drug has no bearing on how genuine it is. It may just be a side effect of the medication. Just as chloroquine can cause itching as a side effect, or even damage the eyes..and drugs like gentamycin (aminoglycoside) can damage the ears

  88. Dear Lilian, so sorry for the loss of your gorgeous and charming son.may his soul RIP.

That was how I was in labour due to give birth to my first baby and was told the doctor had gone for a party.this was on a Easter Sunday. I was left with a nurse who practically knew nothing and happened to be the only one on duty and while birthing, she tore my vulva open with a scissors and my husband screamed that she would not have tore me like that...the pain was more than unbearable but because of my baby I endured.
As God would have it,I gave birth to my beautiful daughter and time came for her to stitch..she kept calling the doctor on the phone to assist her and after which the stupid doctor came from his party to continue...
I eventually passed out cos I lost so much blood. I was given blood transfusion and was OK. After I was discharged.. I swore never ever to near that hospital again. Some private hospitals are indeed death traps.

It's been three years now and anytime I remember that episode I thank God for saving me

This is so wrong. The proper protocol we should follow is to treat only positive tests either microscopy or the rapid test. Not all fever is malaria. Most are of viral origin. What most doctors call typhod is not typhoid as well as widal is reliable when done serially not one off.

  94. I am so sad to read this story and I applaud this lady for taking this up...its not easy for someone in so much pain to deal with this. Her actions will save some lives. Others have left comments saying how they almost had similar situations (imagine the terrible case of the lady who neeed stitches after labour and almost died) and they swore not to go to such places again thank God for you but lets learn to report such incidents so that quacks and negligent drs face some repurcussions. For the few leaving silly comments I pray you never have to loose anyone...cus your comments are totally unjustified, she took her child to a hospital and any reasonable person will expect that medical personnel should know what they are doing. Lillian you are a brave soul and I pray that this Vitalis and other quacks are dealt with....your angel Shawn will be so proud of you. People who are meant to safeguard health can not be playing with peoples lives like this. I hope the Medical Council sits up and deals with tghis squarely!

In this case, she took her child to the hospital. HOSPITAL!she has done nothing wrong. She went to the hospital because she believed they would treat her son and make him well, not kill him.

However, I believe you are a Nigerian and know the level of decay in the country. Why would you send your child to a cheap hospital? Hallucinations and yellowness of eyes are not mild symptoms. Why not go to LUTH children emergency or Lasuth or better hospitals which I'm sure you know or are you that young and naive? Are you a learner?

    2. You are definitely a shallow thinker. How heartless can some people be. Must you blame someone for not doing it right whenever anything goes wrong? So, because she patronized the hospital she's now pound foolish and has sacrificed her child because he wanted him treated? She's now a learner because of that unfortunate happenstance? Until one experiences something you never can tell how the shoe pinches. You'll do better to keep quiet if you do not know what to say rather than spewing balderdash. After all, it's not every body who knows appropriate thing to say in some circumstances.
