Governor Ayade Suspends Commissioner And MD For Not Resuming By 9am

The Cross River state governor, Prof. Ben Ayade, has suspended the Commissioner for Water Resources, Ntufam Gabe Odu Ojie, and the Managing Director of the state water board, Dr. Oju Igile for not reporting to work as at 9am, noting that the suspension would be a strong warning to errant government employees and appointees.

Ayade handed this penalty on the duo when he carried out his usual unscheduled tour of Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, in the state to ensure that civil and public servants comply strictly with basic work ethics.

Addressing journalists on Monday at the premises of the ministry in Calabar, the state capital, he stated that it was an act of indiscipline for appointees not to be at their duty post before 9 O’clock in the morning.

The governor said, “This is about 9 o’clock in the morning and the Commissioner for Water Resources is not at his duty post. The Managing Director of Cross River State Water Board is not in the office.

“I cannot understand why he is not in the office. I therefore, with immediate effect, announce his suspension.
“We will appoint somebody to take over this office with immediate effect. Any single Commissioner I find in this circumstance will leave.”

Ayade went on to check truancy by supervising a roll call of staff who signed the time book as of the time of his visit. Afterwards, he directed that all defaulting staff be disciplined in line with the civil service rules.

  13. Civil service in Nigeria is shit. Yes, they give job security. But the initial pay isn't worth it until you get to a certain level, plus you learn poor work ethics on the job. Very poor work ethics.
When I went to do my masters, I carried the same mentality of slow and sluggish processes in Naij Uni there. I was shocked to see things being done so sharply in an educational institution. That's when I knew that we are our own problem. You go to a govt institution in Nigeria and wait 50 minutes for a 5 minute job yo be done. You even hv to bribe your way through or wait cos oga that's supposed to sign isn't on seat. Our road far oh! E far well well. Unfortunately these are the people who run things in the govt system. With sluggishness and all.... Very sad

  14. Ways to combat this: introduce IT check Ins in every govt institution.let every civil servant have a phone that they check in with. The phone check in should show time and gps location between check in and check out. Once someone is out of their range, there should be a pending explanation. Then also, pay people per hour or per volume of work that passes through their table (for those active units) and see if they won't seat up. The database unti can be monitored in Abuja under a unique institution. That institution will now draft pay roll based on their records and hourly pay rates for different levels.

    *in my dreams* 😵
