Man Who Named Dog Buhari Has Been Re-Arrested

The Ogun State Police Command yesterday, said it had rearrested Mr. Joe Chinakwe, who named his pet dog Buhari, noting that the suspect would be arraigned in court on Monday.

It also stated that Chinakwe, who was earlier released a few days ago, was picked up again based on its belief that the suspect’s action was capable of provoking an ethnoreligious crisis.

Saturday Vanguard had exclusively reported the three-day detention and subsequent release of the 30-year old after the intervention of the Serkin Hausa and President-General of non-indigenes in the state. He was taken into custody after one of his neighbours, who was later found out to be a Nigerien  complained that the dog was named after his father, Alhaji Buhari.

It was learned that the prompt intervention of the elders made the complainant  to withdraw the case at Sango-Ota Division.

Police sources had earlier told Vanguard that upon his release, the father of two, who hails from Ukwunzu in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State and the complainant were made to sign an undertaking not to cause any breach of peace.

In the light of these, the suspect’s arrest yesterday opened another page on the matter that had aroused public interest.

However, the state’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abimbola Oyeyemi, told newsmen that Chinakwe was rearrested yesterday to prevent the state from being plunged into crisis, adding that the complainant and his sympathisers had threatened to kill the suspect.

He further stated that the suspect was being held at the Criminal Investigation Department of the command, noting that the arrest was done to save Chinakwe’s life. In addition, the Police mouthpiece said the suspect,  had  confessed  that he   named  his pet dog Buhari and had the name written on the body of the dog.

His words: “The man is here with us. He is at the Criminal Investigation Department. The charge will be prepared here and he will be arraigned at Sango Magistrate Court on Monday. “He is going to court on Monday because what he did was highly provocative. It can cause an ethnic and religious crisis. We have to be proactive, we cannot fold our arms and allow the state to be plunged into crisis.

“In  fact,  the arrest was made to save the suspect’s life because the complainant and his group have threatened to kill him if he comes back and this may trigger violence”.  Further investigation by Vanguard showed that the Police had not recovered the dog which may likely serve as evidence.

Chinakwe was arrested last Saturday after one of his neighbours complained that he named the dog after his father, Alhaji Buhari.

    1. For those supporting this man, hope you all won't be offended if a Northener names his dog after your grandfather, inscribes the name on the dog and parades your family compound and village with the dog? Hope you all will not be upset after all " he's doing it because of the love he has for Your grandfather.....that man is willfully provocative! What is wrong is wrong! Dont support a wrong cos it was done by your brother or someone sharing same beliefs as yours. The neighbour threatening bodily harm should also be brought in and made to sign an undertaking not to harm or incite his people to harm the man in any way...

What is wrong is the level of hypocrisy and intolerance among these fools. This man hasn't committed a single act that's against the law...NPF should shame themselves and free him

This is getting out of hand abeg, some group of people (the complaints and his group) are taking laws into their hands, they are the real culprits here, can you imagine, they are on the loose waiting to attack and cause voilence at the mere sight of the man, they are the real problem here, they should be locked up.
    What nonsence!

  9. He was re-arrested but the persons that threatened to kill him are still roaming free? Is threatening to kill someone not an offense?
Shouldn't he be in protective custody instead?

  10. They should also arrest the complainant for threatening to kill the accused. Our family dog was named Lincoln because we love d role Lincoln played in Prison Break.... Oya oooo, come and arrest us, America film makers.... If I hear, abi won ti arrest was ni.

  11. What he did was very provocative. He incited violence. He's very lucky that the complainant decided not to take the law into his hands. There's a limit to everything.
We have the right to our bodies, but that doesn't mean that one can't be arrested for indecent exposure, when they walk naked on the road.

I think that holding him in a cell is the best thing for him right now, because the complainant threatened to kill him if he was released.

Threatening one with death is a serious offence, but we know that even if the complainant is made to sign an undertaking, it won't stop his kinsmen from helping him out. Might not even stop him from carrying out his threat.

I know that there's freedom of speech in this country, and we're allowed to name our pets whatever we want to, but there are things that are plain silly.

Freedom of speech is allowed, but in this country, no be everything you fit talk anyhow.

With the level of ethic and religious unrest in this country, an Igbo Christain, living among Northern Muslims, went to inscribe 'their father's name ', on his dog. Who even inscribes names on both sides of their pets?

    'Yanga dey sleep.'

If he makes it out of there, he should just kuku relocate o, to avoid stories that touch.
This one na name wey dey kill dog.

Someone's husband someone's father someone's grandfather someone's neighbour etc.. it's barbaric and expecting the person to keep quiet is plain stupid... simple

  12. Many will regret the day they voted Buhari into power. No freedom of expression anylonger unlike in GEJ's days. People insulted GEJ on all socia media platforms and nothing happened to them.

A Nigerien who is supposed to be deported to his country is threatening to kill and yet no action is taken against him instead an innocent man who committed no crime is charged to court for a senseless offense.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Serves him right. What was he thinking in the first place? . Others are busy trying to better their lives and u are looking for trouble where there is none. I have to commend the NPF for rising to the occasion before this shameless behavior will become a trend or acceptable in our society

  17. He's going to be arraigned to save his life? That's just crazy. What's this?! His only crime, for me, was writing the name on the dog. Religious crisis in what way? The people threatening him are free but he's lost his freedom? Hian!

    ReplyDelete
  18. So they rearrested the man but left those threatening him? So to threaten to kill someone is not an offense? Nigeria I hail thee

  19. This is called conduct liable to cause breach of the peace in law. It is a criminal offence and the suspect should have no sympathy from anybody at all. People just deliberately forment trouble and afterwards begin to look for who would carry their cross. What will naming his dog like that add to his fortune. He doesn't have sense to know how sensitive that act could be, why not give his dog his grandfather's name or does he not love, respect, adore and be inspired by his grandfather. If crises erupts because of this, innocent people would lose their lives and property because of this fool. Let him not be released on bail until he is convicted and sent to prison

  24. Arrant nonsense! As much as I don't support what the slow poke did, arresting him on the grounds of 'protection' is highly unacceptable! What have they done about the other guy?

With that kinda threat, he should be the one in custody not chinakwe. And why are they charging him to court after releasing him? I've never seen a country where a foreigner's interest is being protected more than that of a citizen. Only in Nigeria! Only in this country where an average policeman doesn't know what exactly his duty is.

Oh well, The only one to blame in this mess is none other than chinakwe. He brought this on himself. Mtcheeeew.

D said accuser dat is threatning d accused should b arrested as well, threat to life and properties is a criminal ofence under d law,he needs to sign an undertaken too,or are y telin me he is above d law?

  29. NPF and their mountain of lies. How do you arrest someone for their safety and them charge them to court? Is he under protective custody or under arrest? I find it absurd that those threatening to kill him are free as birds and NPF can't seem to deduce the threat to life from these Nigeriens. Tomorrow we'll also crucify Mr. President for how bad the country is and yet we're intimidating a Nigerian citizen at the instance of a foreigner especially when he hasn't done anything wrong
