Northern Group Hails Sen. Dino Melaye, Calls for Legislative Independence

A Northern Nigeria-based group, Northern People for Democracy has hailed the “sterling contributions of Senator Dino Melaye to the independence of the Nigerian legislature”.





Speaking during their Annual National Conference in Lokoja on Wednesday, the group which drew representatives from representatives from the 19 Northern States of Nigeria said it is “democratically unhealthy for questionable characters to control the affairs of the nation’s law-making institution”.

According to the group, “the present National Assembly has saved the nation from international shame by standing firm on the podium of Justice and fairness , by spurning attempts by some power hungry individuals from foisting their stooges on the National Assembly members .

“Whenever the history of the National Assembly is told, your son in Kogi State , Senator Dino Melaye will be remembered for stoutly rebuffing powerful political forces from hijacking the National Assembly.
“Election of legislative leaders should remain the exclusive right of legislators. Those who are not in the National Assembly have no right determining the leaders of the National Assembly.

“The All Progressives Congress should remain grateful to Senator Dino Melaye and other Senators who insisted on having a legislature that is free from the dictates of questionable characters who  every political position as trading platform.
“APC promised Nigeria true change. That change was made possible by the likes of Dino Melaye, a fearless warrior and one of the shinning hopes of our dear nation.

“We also wish to affirm our support for the Senate Presidency of Sen. Abubakar Bukola Saraki. As a former Governor and a former presidential aspirant, the Kwara-born politician possesses the requisite experience to pilot the affairs of the Senate”, the group  said.

Also speaking at the Conference , Kogi State representative, Mallam Isaq Abubakar told the gathering how the change war was waged in Kogi State . He said the nation deserves transformation and development.
Abubakar said the state is proud of Sen. Dino Melaye and will continue to support his beliefs and ideological leanings. He said Dino Melaye has shown great leadership qualities, calling on the Governor of Kogi State , Alh. Yahaya Bello to see the Senator as partner in progress.

“The Governor has started well. The staff screening is welcome development. We also have seen his efforts in keeping the State clean and also improve infrastructural development . He needs to work with like minds like Dino Melaye who commands great followership across the state”.

The group commended the Governor for his efforts on security, stating that more still need be done to make Kogi safe.
On the state of the nation’s economy, the group call on leaders at all levels to embark on massive agricultural investment to save the nation from hunger and collapse. It said agriculture is the way to go in salvaging the nation from imminent recession. It also call on the economic managers of the nation to do something urgent about exchange rate of naira against the global super currencies.
