I dont know what is going on but in these hard times in Nigeria, it is wrong to even give anyone notice to move..move to where? IT IS WRONG and the government as a whole should look into this...

    3. First of all anon 16.21 reading ur write up hurts, try rereading ur comments before posting.

Secondly, SME n residential areas go hand in hand. This is the worst kind of betrayal from our govt. U won't give us fish n u don't also let us fish for ourselves. This is coming at the wrongest of times. Even if they r at d wrong place d fact dat its a pls of legitimate biz is enough to keep it open n even encourage people to open more. U make dis type of decisions in an economy dat is thriving.

I wonder who is advising these people.

    4. Stella there are a lot of things to put into consideration when it comes to government marking a property for demolition.

First of all, the landlord may have built on the space illegally, and the spot may be an obstruction to road users. Or could have been built on a spot that needs to be accessed regularly by technicians. For example, community electricity, drainage, etc.

Some illegal structures can even be dangerous to the occupants/owners and it is the responsibility of the government to notify them, since some people can like to cut corners and won't do the right permit before building.

Some even obstruct flow of traffic in the area, like if u build on a busy road and turn it into a commercial spot, everyone will be affected. So my point is that there's always a tangible reason for such demolitions.

    1. My dear Bella, in most cases when there is life, hope is lost gone. With the way things are turning out, you either chose life or hope.. everything is going njaba(south).

  8. Not to judge or take sides but in the past, businesses have been known to "settle" and erect illegal structures and when the hammer comes falling, they start crying wolf. 24 hours notice isn't feasible in any sense but if the structure or part of is in violation, it has to go. This is same sense those thieving land grabbers will knowingly encroach on your choice land and build sharp sharp so when you come, they'll bring that "settlement" sentiment on the basis that they've already started building on it.

  9. What right do you occupants have on the premises ? If you're a squatters on the land, you can be rejected within minutes, you ll should know that instead of looking for pity party.

  10. The truth is most of the people who own these business premises are warned by government officials especially in Abuja/FCT but they go ahead and do things the 'Nigerian way' an when it backfires they will come and be crying on social media.

  12. I understand that these are people's businesses, probably their sole source of income but I feel the government shouldn't be blamed.

If the right channels were followed during the construction process, I believe this would not be happening. The law is the law. Has anyone stopped to ask why this building was marked for demolition? If you went to the planning office, paid your dues( no cutting corners), followed the plan; for example, taking into account the distance of the building to the road, height, the type of structure etc. I believe no one will mark your building.

Someone knows what really happened here that the business owner is probably unaware of. But whatever the case is, I believe there is hope for small businesses.
