Cholera outbreak in Isolo Local Government Area of Lagos state, has left at least six people dead, authorities warn residents of further outbreak.
This was contained in a statement by the Commissioner of Health, Dr Jide Idris.
He said the main suspected sources of the epidemic is the salad called 'Abacha', a staple food of the residents of Isolo LCDA and adjourning LGAs/LCDAs and some domestic wells within the communities.
He said the 26 reported cases of cholera in the state were managed at Isolo General Hospital and Lagos Mainland Hospital respectively.
Idris noted that the risk of contracting cholera is increased mainly by poor water and environmental sanitation, including open defecation.
He said the government has identified the three vendors of the contaminated food at Cele Bus Stop and banned the sale.
The commissioner also said that the ministry has distributed factsheets on cholera to the Medical Directors of the state teaching hospital and 26 General Hospitals in Lagos State, including Medical Officers of Health in all the 57 local governments areas, LGAs and LCDAs for circulation to all health workers in their facilities.
He rolled out some of preventive measures to include: constant washing of hands with soap and water thoroughly especially after using the rest room, disposal of waste materials appropriately among others.

It's not like it's in the abacus itself. It's as a result of poor hygiene on the side of the seller. The cassava is soak in water for a period of time before it is sliced. I want to believe the water used is not clean Enough.

ReplyDelete2 of my church members lost dia life last week, my mommy colleague is in the hospital now battling 4 his life.. next month October wld make it 3years I escaped death becos of cholera. Was on my way back frm work, so I decided to stop by and buy abacha at cele bustop, after eating the abacha alone oh! Out of greed I didnt give anyone at home. The next day, I start stooling n vomiting, no be small thing, I felt its just ordinary. My sister bought 7up n mix with salt for where, it continued and I was seriously loosing strength, my mum came back from church and quickly rushed me to the hospital where I was admitted, after several injection n drips no improvement, they took my blood n went for test. Was admitted around 12pm, was still vomiting n stooling till 8pm, no strength wasn't eating. D nurse had to call another doctor on phone and told him my situation, and d drugs n drip I was taking. D doctor screamed and told her to change everything dat he would resume duty d next morning. D nurse came n did wat d other doc instructed. (D previous doctor was giving me a wrong prescription, cos a cleaner later told my mom dat d doctor doesn't knw his work, d father was just using his influence on d son, becos d dad is also a med doc) d next day I became a lit bit better, was placed on ort n drip, d doc then came and told my mum dat d result is out, what am suffering from was food poison.within 3day I lost 10kg. I thank God 4 my life. I stay around isolo... stella dis is very very tru. So tey police arrest dat woman dat 2013
ReplyDeleteI lost one of my family friends daughter last year from food poisoning or cholera after they finished eating dis so called Abacha. Their mom and two of her children ate d abacha and started having running stomach and stooling by night fall d little one lost it and their mom and the second girl was rushed to the hospital. Since then they stop people from selling dat stuff around there as na small community

DeleteJust last week, a young man died of cholera in my area. He slumped and was rushed to a hospital new sabola filling statiob, it was discovered he had cholera. It was too late for him and he died... A young guy of about 20 or 21.. This happened at Ago palace way, Isolo

ReplyDeleteIt's the water they use to process the cassava used in making abacha that is contaminated. Not the abacha in itself. The contaminated water then contaminates the abacha as well.

ReplyDeleteI'm confused. When did cholera turn into food poisoning? As far as I know, they're different illnesses. Cholera can kill within hours while food poisoning is a lot less fatal (when compared to cholera!) as for some, it can resolve on its own.
ReplyDeleteLet's just be mindful of the food we eat and the water we drink. Especially those of us that like to purchase food/drink from outside food vendors.

ReplyDeleteI am not surprised, the whole state is filthy and the people's hygiene is very poor. Every where is rat infested. I wonder how people have managed to survive without a major our break of all sorts of deadly disease. the worst part of it is that people have become immune to their dirty habits and environment. Majority of the people have body odour, they are oblivious to dirt. It is by the grace of God that people are still alive in Lagos State. he Government need to make it a priority to drive cleanliness as an initiative, the environmental days does not cut it any more.
