A teen mom has been charged in the death of her newborn thrown from 2nd-
Authorities in Nebraska say a teen accused of tossing a baby out of her second-storey bedroom window has been charged as an adult with felony child abuse resulting in death,
Omaha police say 16-year-old Antonia Lopez, who had given birth after hiding her pregnancy, was booked Saturday.
Officers were called to the apartment shortly after 4 a.m. Friday, where they found a woman administering CPR to the infant. The woman was later identified as Lopez’s mother.
The baby and 16-year-old were taken to a hospital, where the baby was pronounced dead.
Investigators say the teen was alone in her bedroom when she went into labour and gave birth to the baby. Police say she then threw the infant out the window and told her mother.
According to Global News, Lopez’s extended family members were unaware that she was pregnant.
“It’s caught me by surprise. I just can’t believe it,” the teen’s grandfather, John Barcelona told KETV.
“She looked like she was well underweight more than anything else. I would’ve never dreamed that she was pregnant.”
Next-door neighbour Marcus Nelson said he is disturbed by the incident.
“It’s very sickening, you know. Speaking the best way I can right now, it makes me feel very disturbed,” he said.
Lopez was sentenced to six months probation last year, as a juvenile, on theft charges. And in August 2015, her family reported the teen missing.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and that they are expecting autopsy results next week.
