Nigerians eating Lizards, Cats and Frogs to Survive Recession

SOME families in Kaduna have already been forced to eat leaves so as to survive because the rising cost of food stuff brought about by the current economic recession, could not allow them have the financial resources to visit the markets.

A youth leader, Malam Hassan Ahmed Rufa’i said that leaves such as “tafasa”, spinach, etc, had came to the rescue of these near-starving families, while lizards and cats might become endangered specie because some children were already seen hunting them to provide a cheap source of protein for their families.

Lamenting the increasing excruciating economic hardship, Rufa’i lashed at top political office holders, as well as the rich and affluent people in communities around Kawo, Unguwan Dosa, Hayin Banki and Unguwan Kanawa, saying they had the capability to assist the poor in their midst but were not living up the masses’ expectations.
“Some of them have gone on Hajj for the umpteenth time, while the money they spend making such regular hajj visits could have been used to buy food and feed several mouths. Hajj is incumbent upon a Muslim, once in a life time, if the person can afford it,” he emphasised.

He added that, “rice and maize as well as other staple food items have turned into precious commodities which only the rich and privileged could afford. Many of our people now feed on leaves, some cannot even cook the normal pate, they are seriously feeling the pang of an excruciating poverty. We pray the government should come to peoples rescue by establishing free feeding centers.

“The other time, I saw some children chasing a big agama lizard. When I asked them what they were doing, they said they want to kill it because its roasted meat was sweet. They added that even cats are longer spared because it is also a delicacy,” he said.
The youth leader challenged people in authority to explain how the food items donated to the state by Hajiya Aisha Buhari, were disbursed, alleging that there was little of no adequately publicity, if any, on how the items were distributed.

“People here are suffering; hunger is everywhere. If you go to the Masjid, you see people begging for money to buy food. Go to the hospitals, you see malnourished children everywhere needing medicare and the Doctors will say it’s either malaria or typhoid that is their ailment.

“Government should please come to our aid. It is capable of taking the people out of this predicament,” he insisted.

  6. Can the government stop sponsoring people for hajj and Jerusalem pilgrimage. That thing takes a lot of money. The flight fee, the 500 dollars they give them, hotel bills in the said countries and feeding expenses. Even transporting them from one angle to another is too much and see the crowd going for this things

We don't have money again. Let us focus on other things with that money. As if it wasn't enough, cbn now gave them dollars at the rate of 199 when official amount is already about 350+. Who is fiooling who please

  11. 1. Some poor people are lazy. U can't just be expecting something from someone everytime. That rich man has other responsibility elsewhere.
    2. I live in KD. U/rimi. These people enjoy living in poverty and begging. Any single kobo that enters his hand, is to marry another wife and continue giving birth. And u expect a rich man to come and take care of ur responsibilities.
    3. They don't plan for their lives. In this wahala govt wey we dey, u still see a barrow pusher marrying another wife and still his wife and kids are hungry......

Abeg I can't deal, and mostly u find out that is the uneducated ones that live this way. The civilised one are so beautiful to look at cos their life style is just modern.

  13. On the hunger issue, it's been a year plus. Can we stop talking about the last government and work now. We can come out of this recession if the government in change start by removing the finance minister and putting someone who knows what they are doing. Then bringing in advisers who know what to do and what not to do. The advisers should be on merit and not because they are northerners.

We have land in abundance yet bag of rice is 24k.. We have been making noise with buy Naija to grow the naira and another noise is let's go back to agriculture..

Yet the government is spending money looking for oil where there is none. What the government should be doing now is giving our large scale loans to big time farmers I know things like rice, tomatoes, pepper and so may things like this don't take time to grow. Within 3 months they are ready. Give farmers money to farm so people will see food to eat..

Provide light so industries can work on low cost and make the ones the need to make. And then other things that will revive the economy. I feel for those who have to go all day looking for food or begging to eat. Lord bless them and provide for them..

Price of things in the market are high but what can we do.. Diesel went from 90 naira to 200 naira. It's a very serious something.

We can come out of this in a short time if they government know what they are doing

Ps: this is my opinion.. Argue constructively or move on. Thanks

    3. Kudos fab mum you have said it all. I really don't understand why food would be getting more expensive when there is massive arable land all over Nigeria.

Even the government can set up large scale farms and sell cheap. I don't know what they are doing.

  22. Could this be true? I weep for my motherland. When did we degenerate to this? Giant of Africa indeed. But come to think of it, if the northerners that provides food for the whole nation are experiencing this, what then is happening in region that depends on them. Lord of mercy n compassion, pls look with pity upon us. Turn around my country's hard economic situation n make all things well again. Thank u Jesus

  28. Eating cat isn't new. In minna alot of people eat cat meat. Plus an uneducated hausa man who is poor will marry a new wife if he makes a lil money and add to the ones he has at home that he can barely feed. Anyway majority of them voted buhari. The least we can do is pray to live till 2019 and vote buhari out. STAY STRONG NIGERIANS.

Lizard and cat meat are both delicious protein sources. I recommend it to anyone who can not afford meat or fish. After all our forefathers and elderly ones ate it during the Nigerian civil war and lived long to tell the tales.
