Pastor Tackles Lagos hospital for removing wife’s womb

A pastor with a Pentecostal ministry, Chinedu Rockson, has accused the management of Ilogbo Central Hospital in the Ajangbadi area of Lagos State of removing his wife’s womb and damaging her bladder during childbirth.

Chinedu said the hospital also detained his wife over the payment of N50,000, adding that efforts to clear the bill had been frustrated by the hospital.
It was learnt that Chinedu’s wife, Chinansa, had been referred to the hospital on August 26, 2016, after she could not be delivered of the baby at the hospital where she had her antenatal care.

The hospital reportedly commenced a caesarean section on the 42-year-old after her husband signed some documents to perfect the terms.
Chinedu explained that some hours into the operation, he was called into the theatre to sign another document, adding that nobody told him it was for the removal of his wife’s womb.

He said, “They charged N200, 000 for the operation and we negotiated for N150,000. I paid a deposit of N30,000 and they started the operation.
“They asked me to sign some papers, which I did. Some hours later, a surgeon said there had been complications and I would need to sign another document. He didn’t tell me what I was signing for or the implications. Because I was in a haste to get my wife saved, I signed the document.

“After some time, they brought out my wife from the theatre with a pipe attached to her bladder. We became worried when we discovered that few days afterwards, they didn’t remove the pipe.
“After a week, they said I should come and clear my bill of N50,000 so they could discharge her. I called a senior pastor, who presented them with a cheque. But they said they would keep her for the two weeks that the cheque would be ready to be cashed.”

A sister-in-law, who visited the victim at the hospital, asked the management why the pipe had yet to be removed.
The hospital was said to have opened up that Chinansa’s womb had been removed and her bladder damaged.
“They said she cannot control her urine without the pipe. That was when I realised what had happened,” Chinedu said.

The pastor lamented that  his wife’s medical condition had worsened, adding that he could neither afford the hospital bill nor take her back home in her present condition.
It was learnt that the couple, who are indigenes of Anambra State, married in 2002 and had four children, including the newborn baby.

Lawyer to the Rockson family, Chris Ogbedeneto, in a petition to the state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, called for an investigation into the case.
He said, “Why should there be a second signing? They scared the husband with the sight of his wife in a pool of blood and did not let him know what he was signing for. What is the relationship between the womb and the bladder and why does the hospital’s director now want to discharge the woman when it is obvious that her life is in danger?

“The doctor’s action can breach the peace of the community if urgent actions are not taken. Our client feels debased and suffers a mental and psychological trauma on realising that the wife’s womb has been cut off and the bladder affected without his consent and his wife cannot control her urine anymore.”
The hospital, in its reaction, denied any wrong doing in the matter, saying Chinansa was in a bad shape when she was admitted.

A director at the hospital, Dr Femi Obileyi, said the mother of four could have died but for the quick intervention of the hospital.
He said, “We are known for standard in the area where we operate and that is why we enjoy a lot of patronage. The woman in question had been mismanaged ab initio. She burst her womb in the first hospital where she registered. They pressed her womb to force the baby out and that action ruptured the womb. When she was brought to us, she was bleeding because the labour had become obstructed.

“We discovered that to save her life, we would need to do a surgery. At surgery, we discovered that her uterus had burst, which had also affected her bladder.  We first stopped the bleeding and then made some repairs. It was after all these that we discovered she could not control her urine.

“When they came to us, they had issues with money, which we didn’t allow to be a barrier. We admitted her and did everything possible to save her life. We can’t imagine that after saving her life, the family will turn around to fight us.
“The man was called in when the attempts to repair the womb proved abortive. He was informed that the tear was serious and we had to save her life. We did that to carry him along, and he gave his consent.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said she would get back to the correspondent on the case, but she had yet to do so as of press time.

  5. Quack doctors! Poor woman they just complicate her issues. Even if they sue the hospital/docs, the deed is done already that won't fix the damaged organs.

  7. Patients they always come in a bad state, then blame u for the consequences. If she actually ruptured her uterus before going to that hhosp, then she is really lucky to be alive. Nigerians, it's not copy copy publicity all the time. Seek advice from another source fess, so u don't look foolih. She prolly has a catheter.

    1. Well said.its a catether. It will take time before it can be removed. Were they told that's how it will be there forever? Ignorance is such a disease. No doctor will not explain to you before signing a consent form.its just d relative state of mind at that moment where he is not listening attentively Nd now blaming d doc.

They won't tell you all the places they v visited and all manner of rubbish they had drank and done all in d name of avoiding a caesarean. Mtchewe.

You even have money for lawyer

    2. It's called an INFORMED consent but I Can tell you most times patirnts are nat effectively informed.. they just go straight to the point to ensure the form is signed. If this patient was informed about bladder ish and hysterectomy. He will rather abscond than sign such.

    3. Some patients though.

I heard about a woman who lost her child recently because she chose to go birth her child with "agbebi".

Of course, they found their way to the hospital when the whole process got complicated. However, it was too late and she lost the child.

    4. Who leaves catheter after a caesarean for 2 weeks? For it to be left that long then there is an obvious problem

    Such ignorance!
Oga pastor in as much as i understand your plight but then you should make/have made a foolhardy statement.
Rather than blame the Drs why not calm yourself the fuck down
Complications are bound to arise in most cs and a ruptured uterus et bladder isn't left out.
Your wife's womb was definitely taken out to save her...would u have wanted your wife dead?
Oga she was bleeding profusely hence an emergency hysterectomy was performed.
Dnt deny not being told...No dr will carry out such without informing me husband or guardian.
As for the catheter,it will be there for 7-14 days and then taken off.
It's a management procedure when an injury occurs in the bladder.
Rather than complain you would have trusted the Drs knew what they were doing

    1. If the pastor was well informed going by what what the form is called INFORMED consent form. That man will neva sign that form. And yes he was told to sign it after telling one or two consequences of him not signing it,but he was not categorically told it was HYSTERECTOMY in a lay man's understanding (removalofwomb) which is why he ignorantly signed it under duress.

  9. He should be grateful his wife and child are ALIVE and the doctors went ahead to attend to them regardless of the money issue.#30k out of #150k? The hospital tried! I know some hospitals will not touch her with a ten foot pole as she was bleeding and half of the money was not deposited! Their come back attitude is the reason some hospitals refuse referral cases and rather send them to Luth!

  13. Nigerian hospitals and doctors. They'll keep you in the dark and get angry when you ask questions. Why didn't they tell him what he was signing for the second time? Why not tell him about the complications and necessary procedures so he can make an informed decision?

    1. Only a quack won't tell you what you are signing for. An informed decision in this case is the one that had to be done within 5mins. The woman was bleeding profusely Nd I can tell you that this so called mam of God is twisting this story.

    2. Its tru my dear, there is no proper explanation going by the law guiding INFORMED CONSENT and they feign too busy and angry but if your keen on knowing it's no biggie.

    3. Don't mind the man, I read through the story and didn't feel any atom of sympathy for him, what does the wide need the womb for after five kids? He should be happy that the wife and baby came out alive and he is here crying over uterus.Did they tell her that the bladder damage is permanent? They didn't even charge her much and went ahead to save mother and child. This man should be doing thanksgiving and not this rubbish. Very lucky human being. If it has been a quack doctor, you will be conducting burial by now.

      Delete
    4. And the news up there didn't say it wasn't a permanent damage either. They said 'it was after all these that we discovered she could not control her urine' and further up they said the bladder is damaged

  15. Illiteracy at its peak.
Do they know even in foreign countries hysterectomy(removal of womb) are done during delivery if the woman is seriously bleeding to save her life. Sometimes d bladder is also affected.
This hospital seems knowledgeable. It is obvious dese procedures were done to save her life. Though they shld have probably explained properly to d man in lay mans words. The only issue I have is dat tube they passed to her bladder. Shld she take it home like that without further treatment, don't get that part. They have 4kids already, this mans priority shld be that womans bladder issue, not shouting womb allover the place.
if she had bled to death now, leaving him with 4kids and newborn, what will he do.

  16. Pls people should try and enlighten themselves.
Everything is quack doc dis and dat. There is nowhere complications don't arise. Even abroad pregnant women die during labour. The percentage is very low, but people do die.
That ur first 3kids were born without complication doesn't mean ur last cant have complications.
Maternal haemorrhage does happen. They simply tried to save her life.

  17. While i wouldn't rule out the assumption that some financially handicapped pastor might have spinned a story to get off his bills.....There is an absolute need for fairness.

The authorities involved must thoroughly listen to that man and not wave his concerns aside simply coz he is broke. He signed the papers, trusting the doctors and gave his consent....But how INFORMED was that consent?
Complications like Ruptured uterus and the resultant VVF as reported will change the dynamics of his marriage and with money constraints, it will hurt a lot.

While Doctor might have acted in the best interest of the woman, the miscommunication have cast doubts in his good work here. Hopefully, the hospital management will be negotiative and empathetic in their attitude and not dismissive...coz it could get ugly from here.

Africans are way too sensitive about their wombs....even a woman with 4 kids in a recession still wants it intact.

  19. Nice hospital oooo

To treat with a little payment in these trying times.

Pastor the tube is call catheter... google it please.

It will be off in a few days time.

    ReplyDelete
  20. A woman bleeding profusely from a ruptured womb can loose all her blood in 5minutes without due intervention. Nowadays in government hospitals, if u are going for cesarean section u are mandated to sign double consent in case ur womb needs to be removed to save ur life.

Even if she had a bladder injury during the surgery, the catheter will allow healing to take place. These are normal complications of surgeries.

This pastor had no case as long as he signed the consent for a hysterectomy. Didn't he read what he signed? This case is dead on arrival.

  21. I think the hospital only tried to save her life since she was refered frm oda hospital. The only clause is the pipe, will her bladder heal? If yes, I see no issues here. The man shld be grateful that she didn't die and pray for the bladder healing. The womb no get job again as she don born 4 already. May God preserve the children for her

  22. It's a pity. I wish her safe recovery. Was the hubby not literate? Why didn't he read the documents before signing?

  23. this is so sad, don't even know the hospital to blame, pls Nigerian women should learn to have less children. each child you have your body get weak. may the good LORD see this woman through

  24. I am a doctor practicing in this country,it's not ok for people to jump into conclusion everytime someone complains of mismanagement of a relation without doing a simple research as to the veracity of the claim or the standard treatment protocol for the said ailment,I suspect this woman had obstructed labour likely due to either big baby(cephalo-pelvic disproportion)and must have been given oxytocin in the first hospital to 'help'deliver the baby, thereby rupturing her uterus(womb.so the second hospital did her a favour in my opinion, and if he signed the document then he has no case in my opinion...Dr.Samba

  26. The man should be grateful to the Dr & Nurses that saved his wife's life not talking nonsense, he is lucky they took the woman to private hospital of a Good Dr if not the wife would av been a corpse now. If he doesn't have money he should beg the Dr rather than paying him his good deed for evil.if am the Dr I will sue him for character assaination.

  27. The man should be grateful that his wife and baby are alive. Back in 2011 when I had my baby in Luth, an emergency case like this happened. The husband of the woman, her family members all pleaded with the consultant to do all he can to save her life and that includes removing her womb. Unfortunately, both the woman and her baby died. The baby died in her womb before they got to Luth because they were referred from a private hospital while the woman died even after the surgery since she had lost so much blood.
The family should just be thankful that both mother and child survived. The bladder will heal in due time, as for the womb, she should just see it as the sacrifice she made in place of her life.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Nawa o, of what use is the womb to her again? At least she's got 4 kids already, the man should calm down, the only cause of concern here is the bladder leakage,it should be savage to avoid stories that tickles....

  30. This is just ignorance can the man read? I am sure the form he signed had the information there. Stella this decision is usually not one that takes loads of contemplation o a ruptured uterus ia matter of life and death the woman would be pouring blood like water and as for the lawywr he for try read small now the bladder and uterus are closely related why do you think those young northern girls develop urinene leakage after they have babies. my cousin had something similar in her case the placenta was morbidly attached to her uterus it could not be removed it was like they were seiving blood through her. So they had to take another consent to remove the uterus. It was her first child so all the doctors were really trying not to resort to removing the uterus, God knows best sha in the end that action was what saved her life her husband was of course mad at the hospital initially that baby girl is 16 this year she is the only one.
