Woman Tells Judge ''My Husband Beats My Mum''

A trader, Mrs Happiness Ama, who could no longer tolerate constant beating of her mother by her husband, on Thursday sought to end her marriage.

Happiness, 41, approached an Igando Customary Court in Lagos, saying that her husband, Jerry, with whom she had three children in their 21-year-old marriage, turned her mother into a punching bag.

She said, “My husband beats my mother regularly; the police have warned him to stop the assault but he continued.”
She also alleged that her husband had threatened to kill her if she left him.
She said, “My husband always threatens me; there was a day he brought out a cutlass telling me that he would cut off my head if I left.

“He also threatened to pour acid on me so that no man would be attracted to me. Due to his threat, I can no longer sleep with my two eyes closed.
“I have not been at peace since l got married; he is quarrelsome and violent.”
The petitioner said that their marriage had been ridden with fights and quarrels.

She said, “I am tired of the beating he gives to me and my mother. I have scars all over my body as a proof of his abuse; I am scared; I don’t want to die.”
She urged the court to terminate the marriage, saying that she was no longer interested.

She said, “Since the inception of our marriage, my husband never paid house rent nor his children’s school fees.
“Save me from the cruel hands of my husband; I have suffered so much in silence.”

Jerry, 60, failed to appear in court.

The Court President, Mr Adegboyega Omilola, directed the court registrar to serve the respondent summons.
He adjourned the case till Oct. 11 for mention

  23. Mschew!
There's a solution to men who beat up women.
But it ain't for the lily-livered.
I detest violence but for men like this, that's the only way.
Arrange agberos to beat them up too.
Or if you've got brothers like me, even better.
    Their brain go reset.

  27. A 21 year old marriage? Why don't I believe the woman? You mean she has kids and the children will watch their father beat their mother and grand mother?
Any man who would go so far as to disrespect his mother in law is either the devil himself or the mother in law is a woman who doesnt deserve any respect.
For example, an uncle's wife whose mother was an adulteress and now, uncle's wife was caught twice for adultery and even went on to have a child from one of her affairs; though they are still married. This uncle treats his wife with so much disdain and I still wonder why he's still married to her.
Anyway, na dem know wetin dey worry dem.

    1. You are a stupid person, gosh, your stupidity stinks to high heavens.

So if your mother in law in your words loses all respect before you, you will beat her.

If your mother loses her respect before others, is it okay for them to beat your mom up?

  29. Some people may feel I'm sounding like a brokon record, saying the same thing over and over again. We keep away from blaming women but quick to blame men irrespective of what happens. This never helps the women because they keep getting into problem since their faults are not pointed out. What do I mean? Whereas there are demons in man's skin everywhere, why can't women get the message early enough and get away, yes the tell tale signs are always there.

Imagine my married sister reporting to me that her husband beat my mother once, what second chance does the bastrd have to repeat that. Imagine my relative who has no blood brother reporting to us her relatives that her husband beat her mother because they have no brother. Imagine, imagine, imagine. Isn't it the duty of the woman to report this to her people? When a woman has fouled the relationship she had with her relatives, that's what she gets.

  34. One question we all should have asked or sought an answer to is this. Where is this mother inlaw that is beaten every time? Is she staying with her daughter in her husband's house or does the man go to the mother inlaws place (another man's house) to beat her? If he goes to her house to beat her, then once or twice he would have slept in a police cell for trespassing and assault on another man's wife. If he does that in his own house, then ask the question what does this mother inlaw do that warrants such beating? Lets get an answer to these questions before we crucify this man without hearing from him. Btw I am not a supporter for violence against women or anybody at that.

  35. "Since the inception of our marriage, my husband never paid house rent nor his children’s school fees".
