British Media Warns On MMM 'Wonder Bank' Taking Over Africa

The British Media has called for caution over a reborn Ponzi scheme - MMM investment - which promises a high as 20 per cent return on investment higher than the repo rate now ‘spreading like wildfire’ in Africa

Thousands of investors are feared to have lost their money after a pyramid scheme run by a convicted Russian fraudster crashed, somewhat predictably, in Zimbabwe, the Independent UK reports..

MMM Global has swept across Africa, with branches promising returns on investment of 30 per cent a month in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and some east African states.

It is masterminded by the former Russian politician Sergey Mavrodi, who went on the run when the original MMM – standing for Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox – collapsed in the late 1990s, losing investors an estimated $100m.

On its website, MMM Global unashamedly advertises itself as a scheme whereby new members “assist” older members by paying a fee to join. Older members are allowed to withdraw money after a certain period of time, and receive bonuses for encouraging others to sign up.

Mavrodi himself is reported to have gone into hiding after a separate entity designed to reward investors with the cryptocurrency bitcoin – dubbed the “Republic of Bitcoin” – folded in April this year.

And since then, a criminal investigation has been launched into MMM Global’s branch in South Africa, after a probe by the National Consumer Commission “found something” to suggest the scheme was acting illegally.

With Zimbabwe’s traditional financial institutions in jeopardy and the country gripped by an economic crisis, thousands turned to MMM Global as an investment that was avowedly independent of government control.

That’s despite a warning from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe that the scheme was fraudulent. RBZ warned members of the public that existing investors were “paid money not from genuine market investment of their funds, but from contributions made by new investors, until a point when the scheme can no longer attract new investors”.

Sure enough, users reported being unable to withdraw any funds earlier this month.

One told The Herald newspaper: “When we started putting our funds in the scheme one could get assistance within seven days but things later changed to 14 days and when we were shut out the waiting period was 21 days.

“What it simply means is that the number of people in need of help has outnumbered the number of people joining. Right now we have nowhere to get our money which we invested.”

Despite the cautionary tales of Zimbabwe and South Africa – and indeed the original MMM scheme – a branch is now proving increasingly popular in Nigeria.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has been forced to step in, warning consumers not to deposit money in any institution that is not insured by the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC).

The bank’s comms director, Isaac Okoroafor, described MMM Global as “a new Ponzi scheme … that is spreading like wildfire”.

“These people always come with very interesting propositions,” Mr Okoroafor said. “These are fraudsters who are just out there to collect people’s money and run away as soon as they hit their target.”

MMM Global’s members across Africa continue to defend its legitimacy, publishing screengrabs showing withdrawals as proof the scheme pays out.

In South Africa, where a Ponzi scheme is defined as any investment where the return is 20 per cent higher than the repo rate (currently 7 per cent), an anonymous member told business website Fin24: “MMM honestly tell people how it really works and do not promise people any return on the investments.

“As a donation programme, how is it possible to lose your donation? In MMM people ask each other to help them. It depends on the members themselves to maintain the continuation of the process of the provision of help to each other.”

A number of South African banks have now started shutting down accounts they believe could be linked to MMM, while in Zimbabwe the trusted mobile money transfer company EcoCash has distanced itself from the scheme, saying it is “not liable for any losses arising from the use of EcoCash to engage in illegal activities such as Ponzi schemes”.

MMM will certainly crash. That's a given. The warning is written on their website that you may lose all your money and it also says to use spare money only. So I believe people already know what they are getting themselves involved in. Enough with the warning. Why is noone warning all those baba ijebu and the likes that have rendered so many men useless. People have really benefited from this scheme be it ponzi or not. School fees have been paid, house rents have been settled, food have been provided etc. The only thing is that greed may make you lose all. So you gotta be wise. Participate with SPARE MONEY..and yes, it has helped me too.

People are desperate.
They know the risk inherent and are willing to take it.
Staying at home without a job, no food is a risk already...
This man targets countries that are experiencing recession and he got one.

Frankly, as much as I hate these Ponzy schemes, pyramid kinda sales etc... I will not be hard on anyone that decides to do it.
Yes I will caution you and lay down the risks for you... a lot of people know their risk appetites and limits and have decided to do this.

I just hope for a better Nigeria where things will be affordable for the common man, naira will have value, free health care system.
It seems like a dream, but it can happen.
This is my prayer on this day.
Happy Independence Day people!✌🏻️
By this time next year, we will look back and realize this whole situation was a nightmare we woke up from.🙏

Im just wondering how their businesses give them so much time to be here day noon and night. Don't give me tgat talk of it takes seconds to type. Let me wait for gullible comments.

WILL SOME NIGERIANS LISTEN?
Poverty has made many deaf!
It is the older members that will make the money while the newer ones will suffer the consequences.
Some argue that they use their 'spare' money, meaning they have surplus then! In this recession, where is the loose change people have to spare? A WORD IS ENOUGH FOR THE WISE!

Truth be told, it is really helping in this economy where many people lost their jobs and companies are owing. Government are discouraging it's citizen to stop participating! PLAN WELL
.........
Those who grew up in benin in the early nineties must know this is not different from PLAN WELL and other PONZI scheme of that era. Those who made money reinvested the money and it went down the drain. People sold their properties (houses, cars, lands) to invest in the fraudulent scheme to make cheap money.

When the balloons of hope motivated by greed finally landed on scattered pins there was massive protest in Benin. People died, those that borrowed money to invest developed high blood pressure over night.

Yes, things are bad and the temptation to make quick money is attractive. Folks be careful. It is not about if it will crash, it will. It is about when.

Today those who have invested are looking for emergency friends. Some are now classic pests while disturbing their friends and neighbours to invest in the scheme.

Who told you people that Dangote has not invested in businesses that turned to a total flop? But does the make him tie his legs and pretend to be a mermaid? NO!

EmmyBennie you are so ignorant! Ignorance, sloppiness and laziness are the number one reason for poverty! Blatant lies! May God punish all enemies of MMM! What do the propagators of these campaigns hope to achieve? Is it their money? After robbing our nation blind and destroying our country you want to tell us how to spend our money? BASTARDS!!!

Let me educate the ill-informed. My good friend lost 90% of the value of his stock portfolio in 2008, so maybe these BASTARDS should begin by advising people to stop buying shares in the stock market.

Get this clear people, MMM is not a business, it is not an investment, it is not Ponzi and it is not a get rich quick scheme! MMM is a community and participants make up the community. It is a community of like-minded people that have come together with the sole purpose of lending help to one another with their spare money/resources. Lives are being transformed! I joined MMM 4 months ago with no money, just referrals and today I earn 1 million naira weekly and my earnings keep rising.

MMM will never take a dime from you, instead it gives to you! It is a help platform, that's what it is. It is member by member direct donation so nothing is passed through the platform. For the independence promo that ends today, the system is giving 1,000 naira to everyone that signs up for a free account. The system is all for financial freedom and correcting the imbalance in the world's unfair financial system. Seek knowledge and make an informed decision. Long live MMM! Together we change the world. To join MMM leave your email under this comment and I'll reach you.

I will do my best to explain wot really happened in MMM Zimbabwe in order to calm panics in d mind of misinformed MMM participants.

MMM Zimbabwe offers 100% mavro growth in 30days. This was implemented to attract participants due to the economic hardship in the country. This mavro growth for those of us in business is called market penetration. Again their mavro was never frozen just like ours in Nigeria which multiplies for 15 days and also freezes for that long before withdrawal. What happened in Zimbabwe is an implementation of what is already going on in Nigeria. MMM has seen that they don't need no market penetration to attract participants. They mavro growth was reduced from 100% to 20%. 10% below what we are getting in Nigeria(30%). And the mavro is also frozen for 14days just as its been done in Nigeria. The Nigerian Model works perfectly fine and MMM is trying to implement it globally. So there is no collapse of any structure, its just a remodelling of what is already in place in Nigeria
Again this is what happened in south African in April. They reduced their mavro growth from 50% or so to 30% and 20% with other schemes like lotteries introduced. And I can categorically tell you that the South African Mmm community is growing faster and better than ever after that change and reduction in mavro growth.
Some other points to note is: The writer of that piece, has absolutely no knowledge of how mmm works, and the main aim of it is to cause panic. Zimbabwe MMM is still going on even with the 80% decrease in mavro growth. Did anyone lose their money? No. What happened is when u pledge 10k, instead of getting 20k reward in 30days, which is 100% reward, u get 12k which is 20% reward. They are still rewarded with 2k. In Nigeria we get 3k reward for 10k pledge. So did anyone lose their money? Absolutely not. Has it stopped MMM Zimbabwe from continuing? Not at all.

SEC campaign failed from d very start...

MMM is risky, I know…
MMM is Ponzi, I know…
MMM is a scam, I know…
Mavrodi is a 'criminal', I know…

-But do you know thatj all investments are risky?
-Do you know that the global financial system is the biggest Ponzi scheme of all times?
-Do you know that going to school, working your entire life and hoping on an unpaid pension is a devilish scam?
-Do you know that the US Federal Reserve, our 'master' use every other person as a 'slave' with dollars as 'shackles', are the worst criminals that we still applaud?

If you still see MMM as a scam, please leave me with my scam, I love to be scammed…😆😛

If you still see MMM as a Ponzi scheme, please leave me with it, I crave for it anyways.😋
If you think MMM is not secured, yes I choose not to be, because everyone under security lives in the fools' paradise of freedom.😐😂

In Nigeria, the banks are not enemies of mmm because banks are smiling thanks to 500k people doing inter-bank transfers (N105 flying upandan). Banks are regulated by CBN not SEC. The enemies of mmm are investment houses. Investment houses are regulated by SEC. They deal with bonds, stocks, treasury bills and the likes. Less and less people are buying their products. Their ROI isn't attractive anymore. They are the people who must have informed SEC. and sponsored the media attack. They will fail. No one will buy their packaged rubbish. Indeed, the rich want to keep the masses poor. We must stand strong...

Honestly I don't know why they all so worried about people losing their money. People that are not into it completely misunderstand the ideology of mmm. The platform is wonderful. If it fails no problem afterall nothing is permanent. But for now am game.

My dear friend. The problem here is that most of the people criticizing this MMM doesn't even have a full understanding of how it works. I advise u to take ur time and go visit the site, read the ideology very well and ask questions on any part u're not clear about. That's what I did. I took my time and I did a thorough research about MMM. I asked every question I needed to ask and I cleared every doubt I had. I urge u to do the same. Once u understand fully how MMM-Nigeria works u will have no reason to doubt it. Nobody is scamming anybody. MMM is just a smart idea from a smart fellow. The only way MMM can fail is what this evil people are trying to do now, they are intentionally publishing false news all over the media so as to create panic in the system. Once people begin to panic and gets scared, people will begin to withdraw their money from the system and there won't be a balance anymorr in the system between those that wants to provide help and those that wants to get help. But they won't succeed, bcos we are educating and sensitizing people on the full ideology of MMM. Any right thinking human being that has gotten a full understanding of the MMM workings will have no reason to fall for this cheap ploy.

This Stella is a fool, she can't make money from government just as lindaikeji did during the elections. Except to collect kobo kobo bribe to post nothing she knows about.

The question u should ask yourself is

1. Do MMM collect money from people? MMM has no central Account to collect people's money,if not this wicked government would have shot it down. Instead the money goes within ourselves.

2. Has anyone lost money through MMM?
No, as long as I have been there, since February 2016.

Delete my comment if u like ,I will continue to make my money.

I can't wait for this MMM bubble to crash. So people will open their eyes.

Keep waiting when it will crash, why people like us will keep making money from MMM

MMM is a scam. Take it from a well experienced accountant who witnessed Bernie Maddofs scam. It is the same thing! Better go and take your investment out. Those at the top who collect the money will steal your money and run away in the end! You will lose all and get nothing in return. It is not a cooperative or a high risk or even an investment
. It is a SCAM, point, blank, period!

Taking from Paul to pay Peter. Modern day 419 moving money from one hand to another.
Why don't you leave your name, email and business number?

Ignorance of the highest level. Bernie Maddofs scam is ponzi... He collects your money n promise high return. In mmm no one collects your money. You transfer directly to another Nigerian. Thank you.

When I first read about it here, I was so convinced that I wanted to join. But now I'm totally confused. Let me just observe. Wouldn't mind trying with spare money though. Lol

Anonymous said...

Wow! Beebee you are smart oh. So all the thirty percent interest you are getting isn't a high return? There is no single investment being made here, money is just going round and round peoples hands. Very soon there will be fewer new entrants and everybody will be looking for help. By then the whole system will crash and That's when all of you will see. MMM is a ponzi scheme, a cleverly designed one at that. Nigerians are easily misled by greed and despwearion. A word is enough for the wise.
