DSS Releases Judges On Bail, NJC Meets Today

The seven judges, who were arrested on Friday and Saturday by the Department of State Services, have been released on bail.

A source in the DSS, who confided in The PUNCH on Monday evening, said the judges were released on own recognisance on Sunday.
The DSS source said, “They were all released on bail yesterday (Sunday) on own recognisance. They reported this morning (Monday) and they have all gone back home. They will be coming back tomorrow (Tuesday); and everything went very procedurally well and civil.

“They were released on bail on own recognisance based on the fact that given their standing in the society, they cannot run away. They were instructed that they should come back today (Monday) by 10am. They did report for investigation this morning (Monday morning) and they have gone back home.
“The investigation continues and preparation to charge them to court.

“Also, the action was sequel to the lack of cooperation by the National Judicial Council such as the refusal by the NJC to allow the affected persons to be questioned by the DSS. Investigation started some seven months ago, precisely in April 2016.”

A top judiciary officer in Abuja, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the judges had been released.
But calls to the mobile of one of the judges did not go through.
The DSS had, in what it called a sting operation, arrested Sylvester Ngwuta and Inyang Okoro, both of the Supreme Court;  the suspended Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Ilorin Division, Justice Mohammed Tsamiya; Justice Kabiru Auta of the Kano State High Court and Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Others arrested were the sacked Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice I. A. Umezulike, and Muazu Pindiga of the Federal High Court, Gombe Division.
However, the DSS on Monday, intensified its ongoing investigation of two Justices of the Supreme Court and other judges arrested over the weekend after simultaneous raids on their homes.

Top sources in the Federal Ministry of Justice confided in one of our correspondents on Monday that the DSS had extended its ongoing probe of the arrested judiciary chiefs to the asset declaration forms they submitted to the Code of Conduct Bureau.
The DSS had said it was getting the cooperation of the Federal Ministry of Justice in its ongoing probe of the judges.
Credible sources in the ministry, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak on the probe, confirmed to The PUNCH that the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation was involved in the ongoing investigation.

  2. Dss is not serious... What is the purpose of the whole drama if they will be released this soon. Why didn't they carry out proper investigation before the arrest? So they just realised that the judges are "standard people of the society".... Nigeria have a long way to go.

  8. Thank you Pink Lady

This presidency actually thinks we are stupid and gullible. Every month, APC would come up with an agenda to distract Nigerians from their gross incompetence. This month, they have chosen to intimidate the judiciary.

What gives DSS the right to raid the houses of judges? Where did they obtain their search warrant from? As far as I am concerned, it is unconstitutional and tantamount to intimidation. DSS has no right whatsoever, DSS is neither ICPC nor EFCC whose objective is to fight corruption. When they are able to successfully intimidate the judiciary, they would have fully controlled every masses in Nigeria and that will open the gates for them to start their dictatorial rule which is currently in the works.

There are facts we have to really look at critically.
If I am correct, searching a house at an ungodly hour of the night is not right according to the law. The law also stipulates, before an officer searches a house, the officer should be searched first to avoid them planting any illegal evidence in the house. Were the DSS officers searched first? Everything about this raid is simply unconstitutional.

Independence of Judiciary without any form of intimidation is very important in every society. The judiciary has the right to curb the excesses of the presidency. The judiciary also serves as a checkmate to the presidency. Where our judges are afraid to be painted bad and are scared of their lives, who would call the president to order? That means , we are doomed as a nation. The Presidency has to abide by the rules of the law, we cannot allow him to do whatever he wants to , we are a society with rules, we have appropriate disciplinary measures for erring judges according to the law. The law might be slow but we cannot say because it is slow, then jungle justice should prevail. What DSS did is same as jungle justice.

Does it mean DSS entered the houses of the judges with counting machine to ascertain the exact amount found? APC/Presidency knows that the average Nigerian can be gullible. Once we hear that huge amount, we focus on the alleged money and start crying 'our money, our money' and get distracted and refuse to focus on more pressing issues. Let us all remember this is a democratic system of government, this is not the military era. Rules are there for a purpose. APC/Presidency should stop these hanky panky games and concentrate on bringing Nigeria out of these economic recession. They should provide basic amenities and jobs for our youth.

This is not a fight for corruption. This is a deliberate attempt by an ex-military man who is more in tune with the dictatorial aspect of governing to intimidate every aspect of the government for the purpose of taking over this country. This is exactly the way Hitler and Idi Amin started.

Nope, I am neither a PDP nor APC fan. I analyze from an objective stand.
