Governor Wike Blocks DSS Attempt To Arrest Judge In Rivers

Governor Nyesome Wike in the early hours of today, October 8, 2016 stopped an alleged attempt by men of the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Police to abduct a Judge at his number 35/84 B residence, Forces Avenue, Port Harcourt.

The failed alleged abduction was led by Mr Tosin Ajayi, Rivers state director of the DSS and Rivers state Police Commissioner, Mr Francis Odesanya.

According sources at the scene, the security operatives blocked the entrance of the residence of the Federal High Court judge at about 1am on Saturday morning, claiming that they were acting on orders from above.

However, addressing journalists, Rivers state police commissioner, Francis Odesanya said the two security agencies were at the scene because they received privileged information.

Odesanya claimed he was at the scene as a peace maker. He declined comments on why the Police joined the DSS to abduct a serving Federal High Court judge.

In an interview with journalists at the scene of the failed illegal abduction of a Federal High Court judge by the Police and DSS, Governor Wike said it will not be under his watch that security agencies wiĺl be allowed to entrench needless impunity.

He declared that their reckless action portends danger to the nation’s democracy, noting that he is convinced that President Buhari is not aware of the level of impunity being perpetrated by Federal Securiy agencies.

Governor Wike stated that whatever the situation, the rule of law must prevail in a democratic setting. He said if the security agencies had a lawful directive to implement, they must follow due process .

According to him: “Not under my watch wiĺl I allow this kind of impunity to take place. That is why we are here. I don’t know which judge they were detailed to abduct.

I didn’t bother myself to know which judge. All I am interested in is that, at this level, it is not allowed. “He is not a criminal and he is not an armed robber.

If the person has committed an offence, invite him. It is only when he refuses to honour the invitation that you can adopt this commando style.

“The Commissioner of Police is here, the Director of DSS is here. Their operatives cocked their guns and threatened to shoot me. I have never seen that before. Again , this is to tell you what we are facing .

We know that more will come. For us in this state, we shall continue to resist it.” Governor Wike added: “It doesn’t matter what it will cost. When you talk about liberty, sacrifices must be made. We are not trying to stop an arrest.

All we are saying is that things must be done decently and in line with the rule of law. “Rivers State is under siege. For you to see a governor out at this time of the day, something is wrong.

A siege is an understatement. If this type of thing happens next time, the people wiĺl resist it to the last”.

The governor stressed: “They are trying to do something funny in this state, probably to declare a state of emergency.

This is what happens when u elect an uneducated dictator as a president. Buhari is on a with hunt breaking down houses of judges and threatening the lives of their families. What happened to democracy, the rule of law. Those who were chanting change should tighten their seat beats cos we are in for a rough ride. He messed us the legislative and now he is coming for the judiciary which is an independent and protected arm of govt. Buhari has plans of turning this nation into a millitary regime that is why he removing any thing that looks like an obstacle. And it will be sad if the judiciary keeps mute on this issue. This is lawlessness at its peak. Who issued the arrest warrant, on what grounds are they being rusticated from their homes like armed robbers. Please, the good lady that gave abacha apple, we need u now.

No matter what, wike has no right to stop his arrest, if he is arrested unjustly, he is a man of the law, he can sue them, wike actions show he think he is above d law, a court already issued a warrant! Who is he to stop the Law, something smells fishy, for them to even draw a gun on his excellency, his crime must be deep, and wike is deeply involved in whatever is going on, I like wike, but if he has committed a crime, let justice be done, though the heaven may fall.

Able Governor.

APC/Buhari have failed woefully. No structure/agenda but only structure to arrest, detain and freezing of accounts.

More judges where abdcucted at night in the North including two supreme Court judges

If Justice Walter Onnoghen of the Supreme Court was similarly arrested also, then could it not be a ploy to prevent him from being the next Chief Justice of Nigeria next month as his name has been forwarded to the NJC for consideration and the pave way for Justice Tanko Mohammad, the justice after him? Just thinking aloud.

I laugh at Wike saying the state is under siege.
We were all in this same state when Amaechi was living like a prisoner in this same state because of the powers from above (as they say it).
But i agree with the governor, no self respecting citizen of Nigeria deserves to be taken away in commando fashion in the dead of the night like a common thief.

You ever wonder why it was at that time, why not in broad day light! If you have forgotten, he is an high profile person, arresting him in d day will bring, disgrace to him. I think they were trying to save him from that!!

Joefirst Joshua said...

To save him from embarrassment!

Ur glasses is deceiving ur head....abduction in a Democratic govt. Use ya head not ya fish brain

You are one of the people who takes Nigeria backward, by following politicians blindly, so, you're saying a criminal should be given special treatment! Wow! Just wow to that huge brilliant brain of yours!
Anyway if you haven't heard 2 judge returned N93 , 558 , 000, that is what dey remain of what they spend, 7 more to go, do you think this people are stupid enough to go against 9 high profile Judges! It is bcus they have something rock solid on them! They can't deny, if you think it is bcus of Buhari! Yes am sure, he heated up the investigation, but that doesn't a corrupt person shouldn't be punished because it was ordered by Buhari. Let Justice be done, though the heavens may fall.
