Governor Wike Sends Strong Warning To Rivers Pastors

Few months after the Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, sent a religious bill to the State House of Assembly to control and in effect, ban church worship and evangelism in the state, the Rivers State Government has warned pastors against generating unnecessary noise in public places.

Governor of the state, Nyesom Wike gave this warning through his Special Adviser on Pollution Control, Mr. Nwuke Anucha.

While speaking in Port Harcourt, the state capital, during a pollution control and religious matters meeting with members of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Port Harcourt branch, the SA said the noise churches produce in Port Harcourt was becoming alarming.

He expressed concern that the noise produced by sound systems used by churches was causing unrest in the state, stressing that no responsible government would not take steps to reduce the menace.

Anucha said, “My lords, you will agree with me that the emission of gaseous substance, the sound level of our electric power generation sets and indeed the noise generated by the use of loud speakers in some of our worship centers in no doubt cause serious disorder to human co-existence.

“It is on this premise of good neighborliness that necessitated this meeting. The public outcry about the noise and air pollution generated by some of our churches is so alarming that no responsible and responsive government will shy away from taking necessary actions.

“Churches need to cut down the use of loud speakers with a sound level not above the recommended decibel outside and inside.

  1. Specially those weekly programmes, they can operate with a low sound system order than making it too loud when it's not sunday.

    1. This has always been an issue. And I think it's unfair to everyone who lives around such churches. Even in lagos, morning afternoon and night, na so so noise. Can be annoying

    2. The Bible said "touch not my Anointed and do my prophet no harm".
So I leave their matter with God.
But truth be told, there are some churches you will be passing on you will be hearing the speakers sounding like helicopter engine, but when you look inside you will notice that it is only five people shouting for multitude of igwe mmadu.
Anyway, it is well, even inside well
      Lol

Too much of everything is buhari

  8. Lagos too. they disturb our sleep as early as 5am with loud sound system all in the name of preaching.

It's more annoying when they wake kids up that should be sleeping. Then when they see you rushing for work, they begin to preach about fornication, adultery and going to hell fire (like say all babes na prostitutes)

  23. Wike, the earth is the creation of God and nobody has the right to stop people from worshiping him. Until the creator (God)says the noise is too much then the church can reduce their noise. for now "praise thy Lord"!!!!!

The Earth is the Lord's and it's fullness thereof
People should be free to worship anyhow they like and please too.. They are worshiping the most high, if you have the feared and the love of God in you, you wouldn't even think of saying such Smh
You want to regulate the way people worship God, maybe if God tries to regulate the way he blesses you or how he loves and cares for you... Ungrateful lots
Moreover when people worship they are in the spirit and it's the spirit that leads
Soon they would tell Christians to stop worshiping at all

    6. Are you serious?

    7. Abeg, God is not an author of confusion and he is not deaf either, the churches can evangelize and conduct their service in moderation. Please let's stop constituting nuisance in God's name.

    9. Ignorance can turn one into bondage, he is not shutting down churches, he just said don't turn yourselves into a nuisance. Assuming you have someone having b.p issues and the doctor's recommendation is no noise, would you still say what you just said?.my own is just opposite the church, once they start, our parlour will start vibrating and the most annoying is that most times,it's just a gathering of four or five. The pastor will just put his specially magnified speaker close to his mouth and be shouting as if his is fighting. God help Abians.

  26. It has more to do with city/town planning than warnings. If places of worship are not sited in residential areas and building specifications are made for sound proofing etc. I dont see how this would be a problem. We are there fighting out pastors in the south while in the north they doing the same. Be wise......Meanwhile others totally block major roads in the south in the name of worship.

Lwkmd, gov wike's warning reminds me of when my mom traveled to Calabar for a confrence and beside the hotel they were loudged was a church that was holding their night vigil, and they started shouting FIREEE,, DIEEEE BURNNN, naso all of dem as the JJC's dat they were fled and were all looking for their sqaure root o cuz that was their first time of hearing such and according to her it was lyk d pple were actually inside the rooms with them cuz it was very loud, until the hotel management manage to calm them down and explain to them its a night vigil.

  28. That reminds me of one of our priest that always warn congregations and pious societies to always make sure telephone sound should not be heard outside the church. I think he made a point.

  29. Noise pollution is a big issue in Nigeria, churches , mosque, CDs sellers, you don't have such noise coming from Catholic, Anglican and Methodist Churches

    ReplyDelete
  30. well I think they should include all religious houses so as to make it fair, also clubs, bars, cd/DVD houses should be included... anyone that owns or plans to own any of the mentioned center should be able to soundproof the building so the noise don't go out... I remember following my uncle to a church program and the noise in form of music almost blinded us mind u I didn't use deafened because am sure I didn't hear anything 2-3minutes after coming out of the church..

    ReplyDelete
  31. Governor el rufai, banneb allegedly, public worship and not noise pollution from public worship, evangelism and not noise pollution from public evangelism. Christian southerners should contribute and buy buses to convey them to the south every Sunday and back for church activities while xhristsin northerners should convert to Islam ASAP.

Governor wine is banni g noise pollution from church programmes now not because it's not nessesarily a bad move but because his brother governor is doing something about Christian worship and he has to show that he should remain in the good books of the owners of the country. Aterall waking people up by force by five pm everyday with prayer cries and loud mics isn't noise pollution

  32. @aroma.. no body is restricting worshippers to do so, just telling them the right way of doing it, there are two churches close to my mum house and trust me its not funny when these guys start because they try to outdo themselves to prove that one has a better equipment..
