Dubai-based Indian businessman Balwinder Sahani is in news not only in the Middle East but across the world, as he today bought the most coveted number plate ‘D5′ for Rs 59 crore (around $9 million) from Dubai’s Regional Transport Authority.
The ‘D5′ plate was bought by Balwinder Sahani for one of his Rolls Royce.
Balwinder Sahani, also known as Abu Sabah among VC Circles, is the owner of RSG International group, a property management company, with interests in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, India and the United States. ”It is my hobby. I like collecting unique number plates and I am proud to have got this number. I like number nine and D5 adds up to nine, so I went for it,” Sahani was quoted by Gulf News.
In 2015, Balwinder Sahani bought the vehicle registration number plate O9 for 40 crores. Till date the billionaire had collected 10 number plates so far and he is looking forward to collecting more such numbers in future. Sahani said, “It’s a passion for me. This number will go to one of my Roll Royces”. The ‘D5′ unique number generated great interest among the bidders as the bid started from Rs 32 crore. The bidders and spectators seemed to have enjoyed every bit of the tense battle, cheering every move of the bidders.
Every year more than 300 bidders participated in the live auction which takes place on every two or three months, witnessing a fierce battle between bidders for some numbers. On Saturday the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) offered 80 unique numbers ranging from one to five digits.
According to the RTA authorities, the Saturday’s auction was the biggest one so far. The auction hall was full of participants with most of them had come to learn the trade. Ahmad Hashim Behroozian, CEO of RTA’s Licensing Agency said, “The number D5 has been the biggest draw in the RTA’s auction history, with many VIPs participating”.
According to Behroozian, plate trading is one of the biggest business in Dubai and lots of people are making good money out of it. Apart from live auctions, the RTA organises online plate auctions every month. After ‘D5′ another number plate that attracted big money was Q77 was bought by an Emirati businessman for around 7.24 crore.
