Lagos To Employ 1000 Graduates As Bus Conductors

The National President of the Bus Conductors Association of Nigeria, BCAN, Comrade Israel Ade Adeshola through the Lagos State ministry of transportation said it would employ 1000 graduates from different Universities as Bus Conductors.

Comrade Adeshola in an interview with Vanguard also disclosed that the new policy of the Lagos state government under the leadership of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is collaborating with the association to give Bus Conducting profession a new look.

According to him, “presently Lagos state government through the Lagos State Drivers Institute, LASDRI is training and accrediting conductors in the state, adding that after the training the graduands would be employed as Bus Conductors and would be on the payroll of the government with a salary worth of N50,000 per month.

“The objective is to make the job of bus conducting attractive, respected and dignified as obtainable globally”, he said. Adeshola explained that there is a project in the pipeline by the state government to change the face of transportation system to enhance security and also provide employment opportunity in the state.

Speaking on the vision of the association, he said, since the establishment in 2008, it has been working relentlessly with the federal government through the national assembly as well as some state governments to establish its presence.

    1. Idiot. Yet P.hD holders are sweeping the streets and bathing dead bodies in london. In America they work as doormen but in Nigeria you all wanna work in Shell and chevron. 50k can comfortably take care of someone's basic needs in a month. Except that people that can't even afford 3 square meal wanna drive PORSCHE and convert Bentley to a basic need.
Almost half of the people living in the UK doesn't even own a car.

    3. As if these graduates can even read and write. Only about 5percent of Nigerian graduates are employable without training them for another 10years.

    4. What is God forbid ?

At least some graduates sitting at home don't make up 50k in a month.

We should all pray it is implemented, cos it is still an advantage.
It will also reduce some social vices

    5. Madam Stella how's it great news??? People spend 4 or more years to come and be conductor????? When there are people on d streets they can pick up, clean and make them bus conductors at least dat would dignify them. Nonsense idea.

For your information you can make upto #900,000 a month in an unskilled work in a western, that's why our people can do such jobs you mentioned in abroad. Pls be reasonable and stop swimming in the ocean of ignorance.

  7. I do not see anything wrong with this on the following conditions

    1. The drivers will as well be graduates
    2. The buses will be clean and neat
    3. There will be allowances and guidelines on advancement in accordsnce with civil service rules and conditions of service
With these key conditions, there is nothing wrong here because many graduates are already employed on that salary without any other allowances and assurance of advancement.
After all said and done, many nigerian graduates doing decent jobs abroad are bus conductors cleaners and maiguards just that they are relativrly better paid and can bring something home

    3. Thank you for that observation. There's nothing wrong with drivING buses and automobiles for public transport, if the occupation is given a face lift. One can go from driver to team leader to park head and then manager. It's just that our buses are too local that's why many see it as bad news. Govt should give the transport ystem a facelift and see if graduates won't queue to work with transport companies.

    4. We like better thing. Put modern buses on the road. Give better uniforms and ticketing vending gadgets. Put ac in bus. See if graduates wont apply for Starting salary at 50k.

Good initiate. 50k is a lot considering the conductor won't need to pay tfare(I'm hoping so)

This would go a long way to alleviate unemployment. The question is- how many will humble themselves to take the job while waiting for the big job?

  18. What nonsense & ridicule of graduates, is that a policy to eradicate poverty or unemployment? Such policies should be for those who are not fortunate enough to have a standard education. If such policy is encouraged then its a better way if discouraging our youths from going to higher institutions since they will have this mindset of a graduate working as a bus conductor so I need not go to school. Pls the government should mop up policies that will enhance d life's of Nigerian graduates & d likes.

  35. Good initiative but surely the government could come up with better initiatives for example investing in IT and other innovative programmes rather than this. This initiative shows the level of government's intelligence and lack of progressive attitude. Another idea that the government could have adopted could be setting up research and development institutions where graduates can do research and help the government with cutting edge solutions to modern problems. Nothing wrong with being a conductor but this initiative just shows lazy and backward thinking.

  36. First of I think the "conductor" should be changed to "bus attendant"...And obviously I know it wouldn't be a regular danfo buses cos govt can't keep track record of that but if more bus transit like BRT or Macopolo is integrated more, then it will be better off. Graduates already works in those BRT so no biggie. Then again, just like d operation of the BRT, the "bus attendant" should also be base on time shift too. If all these are done with that pay, it will go a long way in boosting the Lagos economy.

This is what SSCE holders can be doing until they gain admission to uni. Its so so sad, creativity na em win am ooo.. I cannot sit back and watch my younger brother that graduated with 4.46 in elect elect finish NYSC and come and be doing conductor den Zarah buhari dat nobody knows her result will be a minister soon.
