Protest By UPTH Doctors Over Poor State Of Hospital.

RESIDENT doctors at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital took to the streets on Wednesday, demanding for the resolution of the problems that forced them to embark on strike since August 3, 2016.

The protesting resident doctors also called on the Federal Government to begin a forensic auditing of UPTH to find out the reason for the inadequate funding of units and departments of the hospital despite the existence of internally generated revenue.

They explained that their call rooms were in a decrepit condition and added that they had not been paid examination and update allowances for three years.

The protesters also alleged that the management of UPTH refused to address all contentious issues in the hospital since the strike began.

“We are not going back on our industrial action. It is surprising that all the contentious issues that made us to embark on strike in the first place have not been addressed,” one of the protesters said.

President of UPTH Resident Doctors, Achor Mike, decried a situation where UPTH authorities refused to address the lack of consumables for effective healthcare services and the cases of robbery around the hospital.

*This is so sad and just makes me weep...Healthcare should be number PRIORITY of any government in power.

    2. Not only UPTH,most call rooms in teaching hospitals are terrible,as a house officer then, the bathrooms were waterlogged, while taking your bath, you will be standing in the pool of your dirty bath water,it was either that or you go to the quarters and start begging for a place to bathe.

  3. Hmmm.
That I had my baby there is a miracle I am ever grateful for. If I start my story now it may look like Chronicles.

I was in early Labour when i started going to hospital. StellA namesake,if you see the roads leading into this hospital fa! It is so broken and baddddd. Worse than iwofe road.
It made me feel sooo much pains while we drove past. I thought my belle will burst. And the taxi was trying to be fast.

Anyway, they have very very good drs. They treated me like they knew me honestly.

The things i saw there eh. Mosquitoes, no light, no water. I laboured in darkness. My 1st pregnancy o. It was bad.
The worst part was after Sisi was born, I had a tear and the dr had to sew me. This lady dr (God bless her), asked nurse to hold her phone torch and shine inside my private part so she can see to sew me.

I even heard they operate with torch.

    Please the hospital needs help

    3. I remember when I put to bed there no water to bathe and the toilet in the postnatal ward was deplorable. I was smelling and dirty but I waited till I was discharged before I took my bathe. What about the mosquitoes? Millions of them. I had the scars from the bites for several months. No light the heat wan kill person. Like you said if I relay my whole experience, it will be a chronicle.

  4. I have a personal experience with this particular hospital. Biko, it should be shut down. i brought my asthmatic child into the children emergency ward around 4pm. this episode was bad, he was struggling to breath and his inhaler was not helping. Do you know the emergency did not have salbutamol for nebulization (if youve had astham you know what i mean) my husband had to rush to the pharmacy, they told him he had to pay, queues upon queues. the bank person was not there, he waited and waited. finally, someone suggested buying outside, thank God we had a car, before he got back, it was 2 hours. for an EMERGENCY. let me not even tell the story about how oxygen finished while my child was gasping. this hospital should shut down, the management should be revamped. mothers waiting with me were telling their stories. mostly horrible. i will never go there again. Never please.

  7. it is just that they have specialist doctors there and its the cheapest in Port Harcourt if not no right thinking person will patronise them. very dirty hospital with bad road, overgrown grass, rats and MOSQUITOES, Chineke, the mosquitoes there can kill somebody. No light, no water. the doctors want to work. the young doctor attached to my mother really tried for her and some of the nurses (SOME) were good but that hospital needs renovation.

  10. Nigeria is a huge joke. I feel very sorry for ok Nigerians including the rich because when CVA or a cardiac arrest happens, the fastest jet won't get you in time to Europe.

RIP to all my family and friends the Nigerian health system has killed.

  11. At this rate, patients will one day go to the hospital with their own generators.

  12. Things are really bad in that place o. Yes we know they have specialists and the best hands in the state, but the quality of service there is terribly poor. An emergency patient should not even bother to go there. No electricity and water sometimes! In a hospital with that capacity. My friends wife was aasked by the doctor to do a PCV test, the most basic blood testing and was told there were no bottles in the lab for collecting blood, that he should buy a bottle outside (meanwhile this is part of the cost of the test). He had to do it outside the hospital. So many labs and diagnostic centres litter the area around UPTH because of the dysfunctional system in the hospital. They profit from the disarray to the loss of the common man.
You even pay for a surgery there and the things like sutures used for the surgery (which is part of the surgery cost), you would be asked to buy outside the hospital. It's terrible abeg! That place needs a complete overhaul.
In spite of the the fact that there are good doctors there I won't take my relative there for any reason!

  13. The event in that hospital suggest total management failure in handling the affairs of the hospital. There need to be a change of leadership to allow that hospital meet her responsibility of caring for the people of Rivers.
I wonder why the political actors and the traditional leader and institution will watch their referral and only federal tertiary institution go down to that level due to obvious mismanagement.
I think the federal govt as a matter of urgency need to do the needful so as to reposition the hospital.

  16. Very dirty hospital. The mosquitoes are as big as birds. The senior doctors are always abusing the junior ones. No water no light. You pay for everything down to omo and bleach to clean the ward. In the MOP clinic they don't examine your body because there are no gloves and no water to wash hand when you finish. No paper to write when they see you. The hospital needs to be shut down till they can restructure it.

  18. Biko the FG should look into the mgt of UPTH so that the patients life will not be endangered. How can a tertiary hospital not be able to function even as a health centre. Meanwhile, the place should remain shut until the issues raised are resolved. #saveUPTH.

  20. Saw them protesting on tuesday or so.
    UPTH needs serious management overhaul.
The environment, light situation, motivation...wverything is terrible. Very good doctors have turned Ph.d holders in improvisition.
My worst experience there, was running from a theatre room to another to fetch common plaster for a patient coming out of surgery. Plater ran out. Even formalin is gold for biopsy tissues. I feel so traumatized and wonder if it's all worth it.

  22. Upth has legendary mosquitoes as big as bars. No matter what illness takes you there even if it's a broken bone as long as you spend a night there you must take malaria drugs because the mosquitoes must visit you very well!!! Nigeria, my country!!

  24. Most govt own hospital are in deplorable condition until medical Drs stops managing govt own hospital as CMDs leaving it to hospital manager who has degree/certificate in Hospital management our health system will countinue to depreciate cos they do all in their power to run down the hospital so dt they will syfon all the patients to their private clinic bill them high, yet collect from govt too. A Dr shld be on call not a hospital manager.
