Akwa Ibom State Government Asks Football Legend PeleTo Refund $300,000

The Akwa Ibom State Government has asked Brazil legend, Pele, to refund a $300,000 appearance fee.

Pele was paid the amount, to grace the opening of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo two years ago.
The 30,000-capacity stadium, hosted Nigeria’s 2018 World Cup qualifier against Algeria last weekend and was declared open by former president Goodluck Jonathan in November 2014.

Pele failed to attend the inauguration, because there was a shift in dates for the opening of ‘The Nest of Champions’.

This has led to the state goverment demanding he pays back the money.
“The Akwa Ibom Government want their cash back, but so far all their efforts have proved abortive,” a source told AfricanFootball.

“They want all the $300,000, but some experts in the business have advised they should angle for a part of this sum.
“Pele’s people have continued to insist they were not the ones who breached the agreement and so they could not be liable.
“And that by the time a new date for the opening of the stadium was fixed, their client was committed to another engagement.”

  1. They should park well joor. So if you book a musician for an event and you change date he should show even if he had another fixed for the date? They should take a learning from that. Not everyone behaves like them........politicians and civil servants. Shioooorr! Please let him enjoy his naija national cake.

  2. I believe Akwa Ibomites would rather have seen the likes of Jay Jay Okocha and Kanu Nwankwo grace their stadium opening. Anyway, serves em right.

N.B The aforementioned would have been free too.

  8. Which refund???? You breached an agreed date and you are here asking for refund. #Daft administration

Funny guys, you thought you were dealing with a Nigerian who has no other engagement whatsoever. These internationally acclaimed guys are extremely busy on a daily basis.

Let's even say Pele isn't busy but for you guys to have shifted the opening date is a breach of contract agreement so Pele's management will capitalize on it anyday anytime to evade any refund.

Imagine $300,000.00 wasted just like that. Such a misplaced priority #SMH

  13. Why should Pele or his management refund the money?
When politicians refused to set their priority right! We have Jay Jay Okocha, Papilo, Julius Aghahowa, Oliseh, Taribo West, Bright, Ayegbeni, Babayaro, and so many others I can't mention right now; they couldn't choose from our very own super stars but went all the way to South America, to make a deal with Pele. God is truly bigger than them.
They don't respect our football stars, but shivers when they hear about international stars.

That money is gone, because they were the ones who breached the contract.

  15. He can't refund the money as he is not the one that bridged the contract.
