FG Approves 8 New Private Universities

The federal government has approved the establishment of eight new private universities.

Anthony Anwuka, minister of state for education, disclosed this while addressing state house correspondents at the end of Wednesday’s federal executive council (FEC).

Anwuka said the ministry of education had sought for approval after the NUC made recommendation.

The universities are
Anchor University, Ayobo, Lagos;
Arthur Jarvis Akpabuyo University, Calabar, Cross River;
Clifford University, Owerinta, Abia;
Coal City University, Enugu;
Crown Hill University, Kwara;
Dominican University, Ibadan, Oyo;
Kola Daisy University,  Ibadan;
 Legacy University, Okija, Anambra State.

  4. They are clueless people. They have lost touch with reality. All the universities we have we have not invented any thing. They produce graduates with job!

  5. Pardon me if I'm wrong oh! But, I don't think all the universities in Nigeria are up to one university in the U.K., US, Europe sef in infrastructure, facilities, IT services, curriculum, lecturer remuneration and global standards.

    Won't it be better if we use resources to upgrade our universities? Let the people who have money to invest in private universities be convinced to invest these funds in government institutions that already have a larger customer base (students). If Govt isn't ready to upgrade here schools let private owners invest through ASUU and upgrade the system. That way there would be more financial control and everything including lecturer remuneration will be upgraded. Fees may be a bit higher but seeing that Govt institutions have more students, ASUU can work out a fair deal for them. And it would be on very very long term basis. Say 200 years.

    But no! They would be approving and opening groundnut and Garri universities upandan with graduates that can't compete on a global scale. With facilities that are substandard and the list goes on....

    Okay!! I'm done..... 🙌🏽🚶🏽‍♀️

  7. ahba the ratio of admission seekers to university is not well balanced in Nigeria, we are short of universities, and that's why people spend years at home, Universites have max number of student they can admit, so its actually a good idea.

  11. For real? Nigeria as a country is so funny. New schools? When they can't even equip the ones available(the fed and state) and the private universities are untouchable for an average Nigerian.

    Now I know we have misplaced our priority

    1. Misplaced gini? Leave them to their game o.
      After their kids graduate from Covenant and other private Unis they work in Chevron, KPMG, EXXON and Halliburton while the children of poor men are MMM Agents, Indomie and 7-Up distributors. Widening the gap. It is well.

  19. The new schools are privately owned. The government has no choice than to approve them since they have met the needed requirements.

  21. Opinions respected but bet to disagree to a large extent. First off, they are PRIVATE universities and not govt owned, so the issue of govt not issuing licensing for more schools rather than upgrading existing one doesn't apply. Secondly, in as much as private schools are expensive, no denying the role they play in complementing effort of govt in developing economy, increasing man power and creates source of employment. More so, is the alarming rate of UTME applicants being denied admission despite many making cut-off but restricted due to limited capacity for intake given to universities. As a matter of fact we need more universities and other educational and training institutions to help integrate more youths seeking education and capacity building. All the schools we have in Nigeria is not upto half of what obtainable in western world.

    1. We need more credible federal universities not private ones. Because upgraded federal universities would place our education level on a better pedestal on the world map. Apart from convenant and igbenedion, I'm sorry but I'd rather do federal school. The federal ones can employ more people if they have better facilities. They can employ thousands from admin staff to academic staff to soft skilled staff sef! My alma matter Unical has endless land space that cultists were using to oppress people. yet we don't have an engineering department, we don't have a zoo but we have a forestry department. we don't have a good library, we don't have a credible computer science department or a good hostel or a good lecturer-student ratio or enough classrooms. So why can't these be added through private funding? And then investors can get money back? Most of these big foreign unis and the facilities we see are built by private firms who invest through the school and get their money back. Federal universities can absorb millions of UTME intakes if the facilities are right. We have state and federal universities scattered and unequipped. UTME intakes aren't the problem, the universities just Can't absorb them. And that's why it's getting too tight to get in. Simple logic. If bucket too full to carry water upstairs without spilling, pour water inside bigger Bucket, add more and carry am jejely without spill.

    2. I quite agree to ur comment but. I still feel approving more private institutions doesn't stop govt from doing their own bit to better the Federal institutions while the private takes care of itself. On a broader scale, more schools at all levels (pry - uni) helps capacity building. So I feel approving more doesn't stop or hinder govt to their own bit of managing and funding her institutions.
