Massive Sack At Zenith Bank Plc Over The Weekend.

They all left the Office last Friday feeling on top of the World...
Some woke up on Saturday to Notifications that their services were no longer needed at the Bank and many more will be notified this week!

READ AN INSIDER REPORT

''Hi Stella,
This past weekend, Zenith bank sacked more than 2,000 staff. There was no warning, no rumors, nothing!

As a matter of fact, two Executive Directors were promoted to Deputy Managing Director by Jim Ovia himself last week and some other top management were also promoted.

Most of the staff believed there was an imminent mass staff promotion looming soonest and went home for the weekend with joy and hope.

So you can imagine the shock when a lot of people were notified on Saturday up till today that their services are no longer required. And more sack to continue even this week.

In this harsh economy and with Christmas a month away, what a cruel inhumane thing to do. Most of these people have worked for more than 10years, staying loyal to the brand. Some have made sacrifices for this bank but were laid off so wickedly.

Where is the Minister of labour in this country? Did they not notify banks to cease laying off their staff? Oh I weep for my country Nigeria! I weep for the sacked staff and their families! I weep, Oh I weep!''

    5. As an Assistant HR manager (MBA,CIPD,SAP) I can say that There are employee management strategies that every country and Organization should operate by. Abrupt sacking is unethical and should not be used as an excuse to make anyone's dream come true. They deserve a notice period which I believe was stated in their employment contract. Some of these things have happened so much in Nigeria that we start to think its normal

I have always worked in SMEs. I believe in SMEs cos many of them have better structures and parental HR policies. Infact, I'm thinking of setting up a consulting firm for SMEs by my 30th birthday, so I can be my own boss. I never got a multinational or 'big company' job. No matter how many interviews I attended. At a point I started sulking, but as usual I found my niche and I can say right now I earn way more, have more experience, corporate responsibilities and have achieved more than some of my friends absorbed into big organizations at the time I started working in SMEs. In retrospect, I see what God was doing all along. Apart from those who work in oil companies and earn cool bucks the rest I don't envy one bit. They hardly give you an opportunity to grow or nurture your career, and feel like they can lay you off at any time. If you can't play politics, you will just remain in one spot. Go for their interviews they offer you peanuts and act like they're doing you a favour cos of your ID card and complementary card.

One reason I don't envy them is especially because of the way they treat their Human Resources here in Nigeria. It's very poor just like what the banks are doing. I know you ppl will say I'm bragging now. However, about 2 weeks ago I was invited for the 3rd stage of an interview in a big big company. This na company wey I dey say Choi! If I work here I'm sorted for life. But I tell you the way they handled the interview process, I was highly irritated. Infact, after that particular nterview I was asked for comments and questions and I told the executives that their hiring process was very poor. They asked me how and why? I gave them a 15 minute lecture on the issue and how I am disappointed and how it has affected their image to me and how I expect more because of *stated certain facts about their company* I took marker and drew a process map on the white board. (Talking no kukuma be my problem before.) By the time I was done, one of them apologized on behalf of the company and no one questioned my thoughts. They were just looking. I told him I wasn't offended. Smiled. Picked my bag and left (that was one bad ass interview though 💪🏽). At that point I told myself it might not be worth it working in this company. Cos I can imagine what their HR policies would be if the interview process is so poor. Big on the outside, messed up on the inside. And that's how many of these 'big' companies in Nigeria operate, especially the new generation ones with no affiliation to a global organizational system.

That day I complained to one of my mentors and he told me not to expect much from these orgs that I will be shocked at the level of 'Nigerianism' that has gone into their business process. This yeye laying off oh is one of them. If you feel staff aren't productive you introduce a development plan. Don't lay them off. Training and Retaining experienced staff costs a company 50% less than grooming new staff to fill those positions. An organization with Staff loyalty can brag about that being its strength in developed countries. But Nigeria, you stay loyal to an org they treat you like a fool because you're not a rolling stone. That's what zenith has done to these people.

      I wish them the best!!

    11. Elena I just lost IQ points reading this. In trying to rant you just showed how ill informed you are and how little you know about how the cooperate world works. When a company let's people go on such a large scale they are downsizing and not looking to employ anyone else. So if this rant was cos you were hoping to send in your application sorry kiddo but your ass is still going to be unemployed but if you are employed then just maybe it's time for your own firm to downsize so you know how depressing it is to loose your job so close to Christmas especially in such an economically volatile time.

    12. Elena dear, i would pretend as if i didnt read your comment cos baby boo u sound so dumb and you just made ne conclude that you are not acquainted with Hr policies and procedures... Anyways let me take the pain of putting you through if a staff is employed either as a permanent or contractual staff there is always a given notice of termination either one month or one week as we practice in my company.. So laying off a staff without due notice is wrong and protrays injustice. Trust me if its in a civilized country where we hv everything in place that employee can sue that company on the ground of breach in agreement between both parties. As a Hr personnel with my level of experience we dont support that but in the country that everything goes we r at the mercies of the employer.. If a. Staff works more than five years on permanent basis , he or she is entittled to gratuity n paid one month gross salary that's if the said company wants to terminates his or her appointment ... Hope this little lesson can help ur mindset switch from how it has been dont wish people to fall for u to climb cos u knw something karma is a bitch.. 😉😊😊😀😀😀😀😀😀

And at the end of the day what was supposed to get to the states were all cornered. We all see where the money went now? So next time do your findings alright?

Also I knew when the Minister intervened ealier, I knew it was just a quick fix which would only help everyone involved buy a couple of months. The truth is that the FGN cannot dictate when to sack or not to sack especially in this harsh economic climate.
The stupid government be screaming entrepreneurship is the way yet fail to provide an enabling environment to let that happen.

  18. Its sad but the truth of the matter is this is the effect of recession in a country. Companies will fold, aome are managing to put their heads above waters. Most are laying off. The Ministry of Labour cannot do anything to salvage this cos its part of restructuring of things. Zenith reduced salaries hoping to balance things but as it is, it still wasnt working. So the only reasonable thing they could do was to lay off.
I feel sorry for all those who were laid off cos this is the worst time anyone can lose their jobs.

  41. Illiterate fools are blaming Buhari for a recession that was predicted by Sanusi when he was CBN Governor years ago.

The UK has been in recession for years now infact they are currently in a triple dip recession, jobs were lost, people lost their homes, lost their pensions, food banks that never existed now exist because people could not afford to feed themselves and their children.

So they have had to tighten up their belts to survive and come out of it, because of this the beggars in Nigeria abused them and said UK people are stingy. But they forgot that when things were good the Nigerians in the UK sent more money to their family and friends in Nigeria more than any other country in the world and they still do.

A lot of other countries are in recession but they saved for a rainy day. GEJ and his government wiped out the countries funds and any savings that Nigeria had. Now that there is a recession Buhari is blamed for it. It's such a pity that a lot of Nigerians just comment without knowing the facts about what they are commenting about.

    2. Anon you are the illiterate fool

I still find it funny that most people don't know why Nigerian economy went into recession. They love the incompetent lies of Lai Mohammed about the past government ruining everything. It's also myopic to think that if Jonathan were to still be in power, we would be worse off.
The truth about Nigeria's recession is this; it was caused by the president's unguided rhetoric and uncultured body language.
Firstly, there is nothing we are buying today that we weren't buying 5 years ago, therefore it's not our purchase that put pressure on Naira but withdrawal of funds by foreign investors.
After the election, the president created instability with his unguided statements about how everyone is corrupt and how everyone is going to jail. The instability made foreign investors to liquidate their investment and change their money to dollars. In the process of trying to flee, they were willing to buy dollars at any price, which led to high dollar exchange rate.
Even though some of them were not ready to run away, but want their imoney in dollars to save their investments from devaluation, the
president gave a bad signal by banning deposit of foreign currency into domiciliary accounts. That was enough for free market believers to see the draconian handwriting on the wall, that was the beginning of dollar rush.
To make matters worse, the president came up with another outrageous policy of rationing dollar to certain sectors and blocking many sectors out. That was the nail in the coffin which facilitated the emergence of free FALL.
In the end, foreign investors took over $80B out of the economy within a short period and everything went down to free fall.
To those who believe it will be worse if Jonathan is still there, you are all wrong. Policy continuity and political stability will not let billions of dollars leave our shores within such tiny time frame. Even though the government might have income shortage, the private sector will weather the storm by their confidence in the market.
The fear of the unknown created by PMB is responsible for the economic downturn not low oil price. Interest rate in America is currently at 0.5% while it is 12% in Nigeria. JP Morgan Chase will not mind borrowing $50 billion from Feds at 0.5 and put in Nigeria for return of %2000 profit.
Citi bank will do the same, likewise US Bank Corp. Chase gave Buhari warning about the repercussions of his fixing policy before they pulled out, but his illiterate cyber warriors and misseducated e-soldiers said JPMORGAN can go to hell, they no longer believe in economic metrics since their messiah is in charge.
Funny enough they are all suffering today because of the stupid policy, but they find relief by blaming it on past administration and Gucci appetite of average Nigerians.
For your information, if your president "kontunu" with his unguided rhetoric, Naira will go down to N1000/1$. But we thank God, he is no longer talking.

  45. The mentality of some BVs is so shallow - Love Me Jeje, Chi Exotic, Bus abi Molue of this Blog, lead the pack! Recession was caused by Buhari? Nigeria has been in recession since 2010. Go and analyse our huge revenues from oil (avgly $100/barrel in 4years) in addition to the massive borrowings and stealing of our commonwealth by Jonathan and his 40 thieves, during his administration. Jonathan is the cause of our recession - his tenure will turn out to be the worst in the history of Nigeria (the stealing during Shagari's tenure was a child's play compared to Jonathan's). Thank God for the new government despite its imperfections of delays in taking decisive decisions on issues - the bleeding, leakages and stealing of public funds have significantly reduced - infact there is little or no oil revenues to steal now. BVs must learn to speak or make comments with common sense and facts, not sentiments. Better not to make comments if you don't have facts or deep knowledge of the issue under consideration. By the way, people lose their jobs daily all over the world. However, it is more painful in Nigeria because we don't have social safety nets to cushion harsh economic realities e.g. Food stamps and social housing for the vulnerable. We will get there some day SOON! I strongly believe in this country and its abundant human resources.
