Munch's Girls On The Bridge Portrait Sells For $54M

A work by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch fetched over $54 million at Sotheby's auction of impressionist and modern art on Monday.

Girls on the Bridge, a seminal work from 1902, depicts a cluster of girls huddled on a bridge in a country village. It sold in 1996 for $7.7 million and again in 2008 for $30.8 million, each time setting a record for the artist.

In 2012, Munch's work The Scream, one of the most iconic images in art history, sold for $119.9 million at Sotheby's. It became the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction, a record that has been broken four times since.

  15. For those who do not understand the reason behind such payment for a piece. Every masterpiece painting in a long number of years most especially if it was done in an era (renaissance, impressionist, dadaism et al) has a greater value. Provided it's the real piece. It's synonymous to selling a life long family heirloom and getting a fortune for it. The beauty behind the craziness of art collection is that it's value appreciate double or if not triple it's auctioned price(hence making more fortune) . Things noted for buying is the period/era, the painter, how real the painting is et al . Billionaire have a reason for buying it. They make more from it. It's an investment. Moreover Google art movement and visual artist for each era. Likes of Michel Angelo, Pabolo Piccaso, Leonardo da vinci, Vincent Van Goh et al and the current worth of their paintings. Also don't forget to check contemporary African artwork too.

Buying a painting is same as investing in lands and properties ;it appreciates.
