The Service Year Boulevard -1

National Youth Service Corps is the best thing that will happen to anyone that went to University or a higher institution of learning in Nigeria...It is supposed to be the best thing that happens to anyone BUT some people have some negative/positive stories that will shock you from their service year!...

Let me be the first to tell mine briefly.....

I served in Ilesa,Osun state and my NYSC story is beautiful,I had a boyfriend during my Service year,he was Hot,cool, from a well to do home financially and i  mugu-zoned him cos he was too confused to be loyal...LMAO.

During service year every lady/guy dating a Corps member acts like they will end up getting married, some do but some don't and have to look for new dates after Service year.
Oh some two time, three time and even four time sef and end up getting burnt, while some don't

My service year Boo two timed me,I knew but didn't do the confrontation because i hate denials...still do *Mscheeeew*
I pretended i was the only one and when everybody went their ways i closed that door and thought of a way to make my life better.

I had a lot of attention from the opposite sex in Ilesa town where i served,OMG,the men loved women and if you are new in town, you are celebrated and will remain so if you do not share your cake.
I had a nickname ''ori baby'' because i always wore blond weavon...whether e fit me or not was my business..lol

My service was very eventful and i had NO REGRETS,made lots of Owambe friends that i lost contact with and if i was asked to choose where to serve again,i would choose same place because i loved that town, dirty and 'villagy' and red sandy as it was, loved the LG where i served, loved the friendly people, loved my popularity amongst the opposite sex and loved the town gossip.

I know a lot of people from far and wide read this blog,so i would say If you served with me in ilesa town send me a mail or give me a shout out in the comment section,I want to reconnect.

Do you want to briefly tell your service year story and any unforgettable happening?Send a mail and you are next!

Shout out to ilesa born Taiye who lives in the US....*Kisses*

    4. Mine was in portharcout barracks Bori camp. It was fun, I dated a colonel and he gave me paradise. I never lacked anything and didn't even spend one naira from my allawee for the 11months. I saved close to 1m extra all thanks to the colonel. We were an item then. I miss my frndx at bori camp corpers lodge, that lodge was not okay at all but I had no problem bcos most times I was at his place enjoying. We still talk and I miss him.

    8. I enjoyed camp though. I served in Keffi, Nasarawa state and my primary assignment was at Government Secondary school New Karu. Those soldiers eehnnn they dealt with us. I can never forget the day I was asked to frog jump from hostel to parade ground whilst on my period with crazy menstrual pain, I could feel my uterus contracting. I met lots of lovely people in the school I served and in Abuja where I lived as I couldn't live in Nasarawa state because other female corpers were complaining of rape and thieves around maraba and nyanya. I taught SS2 and SS3 students History. Gosh I remember marking 100's of papers for exams. I enjoyed NYSC but if given a second chance I will gladly pass...

    2. Is it when someone shit at the back of my window, the watery egusi they serve, they kill cows everyday but give corpers fish while camp officials eat meat!!! Or the white shorts they gave us that looked like hot pants and the white shirts that had rat holes?? The soldiers entering our dorm and shouting on us while still dressing up. I was a quarter guard so I was able to escape morning assembly. I didn't enjoy it the first week but I enjoyed It later and wished it didn't end. I just wish we were told that after service is when the real struggles begin. Most of us thought we would automatically get jobs. You would quickly realise that the people you were depending on to help u get jobs have nothing to offer and that In this part of the world the most unlikely person to succeed usually is the first to succeed after school. The grace of God gets you thru and not your degree or who you know. Just the grace of God!!!!!!

  4. Camp Kubwa-FCT Abuja baby.
I was in a two man room lol, the other corpers always looked at I and my roomie like big girls because we were the only ones in a 2man room.
I couldn't wait to leave camp though, sharing toilet and waking up 4am was not funny.
Then my Primary assignment was fun, met a lot of people and men in my office were dogs but I didn't even give their broke asses the time of day.
Except for the witchy woman I worked with, service year was a breeze.

    1. I did just the 3 weeks camp but it was MAD fun. Met some really cute guys and babes. One doctor corper was all over me and used to come to Lagos to visit me but he was Muslim and very devoted. I figured it did not make sense dating him cause I was not ready to convert after marriage despite the fact that my mother was a Muslim.
But that 3 weeks though. I had legitimate fun. Contested for my platoon. That maami market was bae. Could not do the full year cause I was running 2 diff programmes in Lagos. But I still keep in touch with a few people though.

  5. Service year was wonderful for me, I served in Shinkafi, Zamfara state. I saw my first sandstorm, my first whirlwind that almost sent me, my roomie and door flying and it was the first time I really did public presentations and acted in public. I saw camels, donkeys and horses up close for the first time, well, I had seen horses before. Food was so cheap I grew fat lol I made friends, experienced a different culture and fell in love. I married my lovely wife 8months into our service year and we have two lovely kids now. I went against the advice of my family and I stand to say it was the best decision I ever made.

  24. Mine was not what I magined so I will talk about my pre service experience.

As I was rounding up from school.. my parents were already planning my service year excitedly..

I used to shake my head behind them because just like they have manipulated everything about our lives(lovingly though) They were going to make sure I served in the same town I grew up.
My mom would say:Nne anyi ga akwu gi ugwo, akwa state na akwu small amount, anyi ga atukwasi ya soemhing na elu😂😂😂😂Meaning:We will pay you.State is paying you people a stipend,we will add a little extra on top.

So I revolved!! I wanted to feel that "villagy" kind of service year where corps members knew themselves.. Ate food in each other's houses and had to visit the village chief for projects.. I wanted that type of intimate affair where we will make an impact in the village.
    I read too many Pacesetters.

Well, to taste life away from them, at least if it is not my town, let me stay close,LOL. they let me spend one week with a dear friend where she was serving then at Okwuzi Egbema..Omoku. This was after much dialogue and even sending a driver with me to know where I was going to be staying.

It was beautiful.. I had fuuunnnnn!! It was the kind of communal living I dreamt of. Next door Neighbour's dated... there were sentforth parties, gossip etc
This was before the intensity of the crisis in Portharcout then.

Fast forward to my time.. My parents started reneging on their promise using some little violence across various states as their reason. Finally,I just feel they were dealing with separation anxiety.

A family friend wedged in between my parents and I and that's how I ran as fast as my legs could carry me... very far from them.

It ended up not being the service year I wanted.
It was a big town.. too sophiscated. You don't even get to see other corps members until you go for your CD.
The dream state of every corps member now.

I already had a job waiting so I worked my butt off.
It was too serious for a young girl that just wanted to have fun.
I had presentations to give, work etiquette to adopt, people to call Sir and Ma,procedures and policies.
E clear for my eyes sharperly😳😳😳
But I'm still grateful for opportunities and my folks for prodding me on.

Finally, I will like to say that I'm a huge fan of the Nigerian Youth Service exercise.. If they can revisit camps and build them to standard, review the stipends they pay.. it is indeed an avenue most graduates help their families and even save little extras.

I see people saying, scrap it and I laugh.. until you finish service and come out job hunting, you will begin to appreciate NYSC and the cover it gives some graduates that do not have it so good.

Its frustrating wen u finish service without a job. The secret is saving , saving and saving.
I got me a brand new HP laptop from my allowee, ran 2 professional courses. Bought fones for my peeps and still had like 60k in my allowee account after service. I planned myself well such that i didnt touch my 2 months allowee before POP.And the 60k saved me for few weeks after POP. Ofcourse, i had toasters who were crediting my bank account. As a fine, sexy corps member that i was then.. They named me "Chi light" cos i was the only fair corps member posted to my PPA. my LGI fell in love with me, married man oo but i used it to my advantage. He made sure he signed my PV whether i came for end of d month CDS, i also did INEC job then . choi.!! Cnt forget the fish pepper soup prepared with locust bean. Or is it fresh pepper , tomato , yam and okro that was so cheap. I cooked varieties oo and my yoruba corper friends enjoyed ny meals.

I served in Osun state... Lmaooo
And i made Lagos my 2nd home. Was always visiting my frnds in Ajah every weekend. So no dull moment.

I actually taught in a school but i made sure i bribed my proprietress and her husband with gifts so they can allow me travel wnever i want.

I met boo during my service year, got engaged 3 months after POP and the rest is history.

My service year 2014 was perfect despite all the challenges i faced. Omg, my fingers hurt!!!
      Iphie, thanks for the space..

    3. You are welcome to use my space anytime hun.

I have heard stories about people that came back to serve as fake corps members because of the free accomodation and Food.. they loiter in Camps just because they don't have anywhere to go.

I enrolled for NIM thanks to NYSC..
As much as we want to attack the government or try to say "Scrap it" because others are saying it, I feel people that can't survive before the months or years preceding their getting jobs should be considered.

I know people that sent pocket money home to their parents from that same stipend people criticism here.

If anyone even had a reason to hate this programme,it should be people from Diaspora that are forced to serve before they can ever work here.
On a lighter note, this might be the only time you get anything directly from the government😂😂😂

Kudos Chy! You are a hustler.

  26. My service of 2 weeks because I didn't stay the full year was the worst experience of my life ; As ajebo who I be.......... Hahahaha
I had settled to remain in Lagos o. That is how I saw the list and I was posted to the North.
I manage stay 2wks of camp........... First night no room, we slept outside one of the classrooms. Next day we finally got a room which was a class room converted to room. No mattress for like 3days. We slept on the bare floor and just put clothe.
Bathroom/ toilet was an eyesore. We bath outside.
Food was crap. I ate bread and noddles for the whole 2 weeks I was there. Didn't do passing out parade or any of those things. The 2weeks of hell was already bad enough for me.
The funny thing is my besto in camp was a married young girl with 2kids, twins. You need to see the way this girl use to cry to her husband on the phone daily. It was just funny. Finally on our 2nd week the girl told me she can't take it again, she's leaving back to Lagos, am I interested. She had settled people, planned everything and at d end we will get our certificate. I couldn't even imagine remaining in dat camp hell without her. So I said I'm in.,
We spent just 2weeks, settled and got our certificate later.
Who even has the time, I was already working before service. So I just took 3 weeks off work, couldn't take 1year off and be looking for work again after.
A lot of people had very nice camp experience, pity I didn't. Perhaps if I wasn't posted to the North my experience may have been better.

  27. Served in a Northern town where hatred was rife. If you are NYSC, you were Igbo; nyamiri and hated. Even ask someone in the bank to use their pens, they will look you from head to toe and blink disdainfully and pocket it. A local girl you teach greets you in the market and they warn her and threaten her for talking to "Nyamiri". Stop and empty "achaba" (okada) and he will just move on only to stop a pole away for "the local people". During "religious" riots, the southern corp members who were muslims and prayed in the mosques every friday also ran for dear lives. Their fellow muslims wanted to kill them. Once you don't speak Hausa, you are not muslem. It was the saddest experience of my life.

  39. I so much enjoyed my service year....
I made some friends that would stick a life time. I camped in Kano state but relocated to enugu which is like my second home now.
The first week of camp was crazy I almost regreted coming but with time I adjusted and didnt even want it to end....
Enjoyed all the activities, the experience I totaly love it.... The camp was so neat and organized, northern camps are just the best.
Hilarious set of ppl i met in that camp, almost every one i knew redeployed to other states shaa....
Reminiscing of the mammy mkt times, the queue for food, parade, Man O War, talent hunt.
All in all it was worthwhile, it an experience I cant forget in a hurry

  40. Served in bayelsa state.... Wasn't a nice experience at first cos am yoruba couldn't cope with the language and all. But I met so many nice ppl right from my camp days. That 21days nobi beans as per me wey no like wahala i was stretched to breaking point, Boi trouble and all,my physic really put me in so much trouble. As if le boos knows he proposed 5 days to camp. He was everywhere like monitoring spirit lol... As in always on fone he knows my moves all the time from parade ground to maami mkt, then to the hostel.. .. Everyday. No time for social activities, i was picked to represent my platoon for the miss nysc contest, but babe said nope. He is such a jealous sweetheart. My ppa was just boring one thick forest like that ... . But i met beautiful ppl they really made my service year worthwhile. Passed out this Nov and we are planning our intro and wedding already.

  41. Mine was in AkwaIbom, Nsit Atai Camp, came on the last day of camp and almost wasnt allowed to enter camp was fun, smoked for the first time, made friends with half the kitchen staff, for Sunday meat. Left camp met one stunning girl who was learning to sew in Afagha Eket Street, Eket. Everyday after work I would go there and take her home or to joints with my friends, she was so damm beautiful everyone envied us, she was HIV positive and was so gracious to tell me after a month of dating, she wouldn't even kiss me no matter how much I tried, so learning about her condition even brought us closer and by the time she graduated from fashion design school I had left but sent her money to add to start her place. She let me choose her fashion label name, 7yrs and we still talk like besties! I love you Mfon, for the gift of genuine friendship.

  51. I served in gombe mallam sidi camp in 2011, the camp was newly built so we were the second batch to use it all was clean and prim. Met a lot of friends was later posted to NTA for my PPA couldn't stay in NCCF lodge went to rent an apartment at federal low cost, so many doctors on my case but they were all fuck boys. Participated in the general election that brought Jonathan into power. Chai Hausa's dealt with corpers then thinking we helped Jonathan to rig the election I was posted to Funakaye local government in deep village called kupto.we were forced to give under age ballot papers to vote for buhari back then under CPC party..but all in all I enjoyed my stay light was constant, water, cheap food, enjoyed my winners church in kasuwa n katako. Tunfure resort was great..went to zambuk for Oct 1st rally it was fun. I left after my POP and that very night Boko haram attacked gombe for the first time..would love to go back sha but the fear of boko haram is the beginning of sitting ur ass in ur state..got a job after 4month and its 4years + still counting.. I just pray God connect me to my man
