Thousands Test Positive To HIV In Lagos

The Lagos State Aids Control Agency has said that 9, 579 persons tested positive to HIV between the months of January and June.

LSACA’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Oluseyi Temowo, also stated that about 616, 318 persons in the state were counselled and tested within the same period.

Temowo disclosed this at a briefing being part of the activities put in place to mark the 2016 World AIDS Day on December 1.

He stated, “These statistics simply mean that there are many more people who are not aware that they have the virus, that is why knowing one’s status is very important.

“It is a common knowledge that an HIV-positive person can be symptom-free for 10 years and will continue to infect others, if not checked and treated. Being HIV-positive does not translate to death, with appropriate medications.”

Temowo said that the agency had mobilised HCT trucks and health personnels to hard-to-reach communities in the state to conduct free HIV counselling and testing.

This, he said, would enable every Lagos resident to be aware of his or her HIV status.

Temowo said that access to HCT would allow individuals to know their status and take appropriate steps to prevent HIV transmission to other persons.

He said that this would also stop the progression to AIDS through lifestyle modification and health seeking behaviour.

Temowo said Lagos was determined to achieve the global targets of eradicating of the disease by 2030.

“Achieving an AIDS-free generation requires collective efforts. This is why we are calling on government at all levels, individuals and organisations to join us in this quest to make Lagos State an HIV Free Zone.

“We implore residents to visit all government hospitals within their areas to access free HCT, while HCT trucks will move around to reach other areas for this purpose.

“We also advise people to ensure these various means of prevention – condom use, harm reduction, voluntary medical male circumcision, prevention of mother-to-child transmission, counselling and testing,” Temowo added.

    2. HIV seemed unreal to me till my father tested positive.

People need to be careful at least there is awareness now so take all the necessary precautions.

Sex is just a brief moment of pleasure, so not worth it. If you can't abstain, do the needful.

My father's own was as a result of his promiscuity.

He used to chase women as if they were going out of season.

HIV is not the end of the world and it can be managed but I would rather prevent when I can than start curing.

It is mostly contacted through sexual intercourse so people be careful!!

      God help us.

He sat us down and explained the situation. He has been using his drugs since then.

Sad thing is he has had several partners since then. How are we sure he told them about his status? How are we sure he is using a condom? What does he still want in women?

  29. If someone preaches about the dangers of casual sex and infidelity and tying ones legs like a mermaid or merman they almost get their heads chopped off but it doesn't change the truth or make the dangers go away. Yes I know there are countless ways to get infected but sex tops the list so go figure. You go for a manicure or pedicure or even to fix your hair and you demand for new needles yet go home and have unprotected sex with your side boo 😈 who is fooling who?
Randy ass husbands/ wives please pity your poor wife and kids who you might eventually infect and respect yourselves. What you are looking for in sokoto is in your shokoto.

  30. Thank god hubby is reading this, I can see d fear in his face

  31. The scary thing about this HIV is you can live a clean godly life, marry as a virgin. Sleep with only your husband and d person can still get infected.
The hubby might have just even one side chick, that side chick has a main boo and that main boo has various partners.
I don't know why people can't just stick to one partner.
All these holier than thou wives that shame single girls, you might never know you may even be at more risk than them. So instead of chasing about d girls ur husband is chasing, pls also show him pepper. Advice him to use protection if you know u are married to a neighbourhood dog.
A lot of Nigerian men, even married men don't like using condom. Don't understand why ? Especially those rich old men.

  32. Well getting tested regularly is the main thing...

You all make it seem like sexual intercourse is the only way one contracts the disease and that's the same reason that led to its stigmatization ...

  33. Thankfully a lot of companies do full medical including HIV before employment.
I still tested this January when I started a new job.
My issue now is the guy I am dating. We have had unprotected sex a couple of times which I'm not comfortable with. I had to go out and buy packs n packs of condoms since he has refused to buy. I dont know where he has been before meeting me or if he doesn't even have a side chick sef.

  35. HIV Apart from cancer is one disease that scares the hell out of me.
So last year I had an HIV scare
I was playing with the mirror one day in my room, so I opened my mouth and I saw a whitish patch at both tonsils of the posterior part of my mouth.

That's how I just screamed, fell to the ground started crying and saying God is this how you want to end my life? So I have HIV ... even worse case is that I'm far gone. I thought the whitish substance was candidiasis. Which is seen in late stages of HIV.

That's how quickly ... that night went to the hospital ... didn't even go for testing , I just went straight to the department where they admit HIV patients that have developed infections that requires them to be secluded .

As I entered looking like a mad lady ... I was just crying asking for the nurse that she should come and start me in antiretrovirals.
πŸ˜‚. The nurses there started laughing @ me. Hmmm I saw patients there looking dejected and half gone.. I just walked out of the place.

As I was strolling to the emergency unit . That's how one car stopped by( in my mind I was like ... I beg ooo. Not in the mood for anybody to toast me ) . This car drove pass me like two times... the third time he had gone to reverse and stopped , and then rolled his window and was like
'Hi , are you ok? I just noticed that you look bothered '
I didn't know when i burst into tears and sat in the guy's car.... and narrated my ordeal to him. He then encouraged me and said he'll help me and said I need to get tested first .
    Guess what ? I didn't know the guy was a doctor .

So he took me to the lab... the brought a psychologist to come and calm me down... that one was just saying I don't have HIV and I don't look like one ... that she knows how they look like and she talks to them all the time.
I just started crying @ her saying ' HIV doesn't show for face ... so she should tell me that.

The phlebotomist came took my blood sample.
The waiting period was the worst time of my entire 30 years on earth.
I peed ... I screamed .. I thought of my fiancΓ© and how I may have probably infected him ... because I cheated once. I started asking God for mercy... making promises πŸ˜‚

The result finally came .. and it was negative .. I didn't believe them .. I told them to show me and indeed it was negative . I went to another lab to confirm .. it was also negative. I told the guy I cheated with to do a test. He gave me the result of his test and he was negative.

I was later told I had strep tonsilitis and that was what gave me the white patch .. which later clears after I was placed on antibiotics .

Since then. !na mermaid styyle and condom.
    I learnt my lesson.
