    16. Relax guys, traditional marriage is also known as polygamous marriage. It allows the man marry other women but it forbids the wife "having" other men.

If you want "equal rights", which is more enforceable in theory than in practice, insist on marriage under the Act, which is conducted at the Registry or at a church licensed to wed couples and issue Marriage certificates.

Most traditions are unfair to women and has been in existence for centuries, but it is what it is. You either subject yourself to it or refuse to be bound by it.‎

Its part of custom and tradition for the woman to kneel, drink palm wine while repeating the words (oath) during a marriage ceremony failure to do it will be seen as disobedience and the marriage ceremony can be postponed indefinitely,.. If the marriage crashes you are expected to return the bride price and get on with ur life... If u can't deal pls don't fall in love with some South South guys abeg

    2. Thanks for the information @ precix cakes but my question is ....Was the bride not aware of this oath taking ceremony? Am a man and married for 15years and I don't agree that she should take any oath unless the man takes it first. He is the head and should lead by example if his intention is pure and innocent.

Then if you are divorced I don't think you have any bounds together whosoever. According to the twitter handle, she was asked to swear she won't cheat on her husband so that means in marriage. He can't be hour husband if you are divorced or when he is dead.

But is till won't swear. Unless he is also sweating that he will be faithful to me in marriage. Not because I'll cheat but then why should I swear when he is not swearing

They both need to be accountable to themselves and each other otherwise the good one among them suffers due to the bad one's conduct/actions/extramarital activities. Justify your statement that the man doesn't need to take an oath as well as the woman.
If she must take the oath, what is the reason?
By the way, u say she has to take it to stay faithful to the man.
Then u think the man doesn't have to do same so that he stays unfaithful to the one who is faithful to him. This is simply WITCHCRAFT!!!
Control freaks! Wanting to have your life to yourself while you think others shouldn't have their basic freedom so that u can manipulate them too.
If this story is true, the lady did just perfect. There's no equity in that pronouncement. It is like lending someone your life savings knowing that the fellow is a pauper would has maintained track record of swandering resources at his disposal. 3. If the man refuses to accept the return of the bride price, the lady in question should file for the dissolution of the marriage at the customary court. The customary court has the powers to dissolve traditional marriages where the man refuses to accept the bride price.

It will be paid into the court's Registry and for all intents and purposes that marriage ceases to exist in law and tradition. You can "cage" a wife by refusing to collect the bride price you paid. I hope lady gets legal advice.

And I think a man who loves a woman should familiarise her with the traditions and ways of his people so you don't just waste her time for nothing like this one here.
And ladies, learn to ask questions too.

My Opinion: It's not a big deal for a woman who truly loves a man to take such oaths but when it's one sided, it simply spells doom.
Some of this traditions go beyond the marriage. Even if she should divorce the man tomorrow, once she sleeps with another man she's doomed for life.

I know of a place where it is the man that falls sick if the wife cheats. And if she doesn't confess and do some sacrifice with a goat, the man might just die.

  70. My view on how to treat women.
1.Don't compare your wife to other women. You don't know what their husbands are going through.
    2. NEVER expose your wife's weakness to your family or friends or run to them whenever you have issues. Problems are best solved between you and your woman.
    3. Don't think you are man so you can use intimidation, shout or violence to communicate your moods. Agreesive men don't make a happy home.

    4. Speak gently and calmly to your wife. Never raise your voice at her, it demeans her and shows you think she is stupid.
    5. Do your responsibilities as man...don't leave every to your woman.

    6. Never blame your wife if she doesn't take care of the home everyday. She is swamped with house work and helping you raise the kids.

    7. Don't be wasteful spending money on drinks, friends and extended family. The wife and children are your first responsibility.

    8. Sex is also important to women. Her pleasure should be considered before your own.
    9. Never compare your wife to your ex-girlfriends. If you loved them so much why didn't you marry them instead of your wife.

    10. Never shout down your wife or challenge her in front of the children. The children are watching. They won't listen and obey her too.

    11. Tell your wife she's beautiful even if you know she's looking normal. Women love compliment.

  72. Why is it that women are always made to go through somethings that are debased ?.why did Jesus not condemned the adulterous women in the bible ? The punishment for the sin of adultery is not a one sided issue because God will judge both genders.so if a woman must take an oath the man should also do the same.moreover some of this there so called oath have a lot of implications beyond the ordinary. Also a real child of God should avoid oath taking.

  74. For me it's not about if the lady or the man was asked to take an oath, but about how people have fear for our traditional gods but disregard and ridicule ALMIGHTY GOD. Its easier to take for granted Oath taking before God cos He's merciful. Its oath and allegiance couple pledges in church before God using Bible to exchange vows. Same applies to court how some will still lie after taking oath with Holy Book, but they dare not lie if cutlass or iron is used cos they'd meet their doom straight ni.

  75. Stellz, by now you ought to realise "gender equality" in cases of marriage or infidelity can never be attainable, especially in countries like Nigeria. It will be a monumental waste of time and energy to keep the debate on. For one, traditional marriage, which is one of the 2 valid marriages‎ in Nigeria, clothes the man with the right to marry more than one wife. Surprisingly, a lot of people, women included, favour traditional marriage to marriage under the Act (Registry or Church wedding). A lot of people have more regard for the payment of the dowry  or bride price than the marriage certificate issued at the Registry or in a licensed church.

Clearly, the instant cases is about a traditional marriage where the man can sleep with and marry other women but the wife is not permitted to sleep with or marry another man. Polygamy is accepted by tradition but polyandry is considered a taboo. So how can you wonder whether the man was asked to make the same oath? Of course he wasn't. That would be untraditional. It's only marriage under the Act that somewhat insulates the wife. She can file for divorce on grounds of adultery if her husband cheats (we all know it's still the woman who will be under attack if she chooses to exercise this right). Secondly, once a man marries under the Act, he can no longer marry a 2nd wife, even under tradition, without dissolving the 1st marriage. If he goes ahead to pay the bride price of another woman while his 1st marriage subsists, that amounts to bigamy, a criminal offence (of course, a lot of women are still discouraged from filing criminal charges against their husbands, plus a lot of courts will frustrate the complainant till she has no choice than to withdraw the charge and settled her marital issues at home). You see? Even when the law protects a woman's interests, it's still almost impractical.

I'm not sure why the lady in question refused to swear but I commend her guts. I'm a stickler for honesty, no matter the backlash. It's also possible that her faith forbids her swearing. We should also consider the fact that she was blindsided. Perhaps she had no idea that she will be asked to take such an oath. A lot of oaths taken in traditional marriages are fetish because the "enforcer" of the oaths are the village deity.
