Cross River Civil Servants Protest Early Salary Payment

Civil servants in Cross River State on Friday condemned the decision of the state governor, Ben Ayade, to pay their December salary on the first day of the month.

Our correspondent learned that some civil servants had on December 1 received alerts for the month’s salary, as against the 25th of every month.

It would be the second time that workers would be receiving salaries on the first day of the month as they had in May 2016 got a similar gesture from the governor in commemoration of the Workers’ Day celebration.

The aggrieved workers said the decision to pay their salaries in advance would later cause untold hardship as the Yuletide approaches.

A top civil servant in the Ministry of Environment, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “The state government’s decision to pay December salaries of some civil servants within the first three days of the month will make us suffer in due course.

“The government should have employed caution by delaying December salary payments to a later date. Our governor may want to score a political point with this payment, but I think that those of us receiving this money stand to lose fiscally when January comes.”

But one of the governor’s aides, who pleaded anonymity, said the workers should applaud the governor instead of complaining.

The source said, “People are so impossible to please. There are states in this country where salaries are not paid as and when due, but in Cross River State, our governor pays salaries and even pays ahead to cater for special occasions like the Workers’ Day and this Yuletide.

“Instead of applauding him, some people say he shouldn’t have paid. Nigerians are difficult to please.''

And yes even though I haven't been paid Nov salary as a civil servant I still don't like the early Dec payment becos by Jan end they will have no money to spend..in fact by Dec end Sef unless the person knows how to tight belt like me.

  7. Stella biko you are not a civil servant, imagine the rubbish they are saying, getting things at the market this period will be cheaper compared to end of the month and money can be save for perishable items like soup ingredients, are they kids? can't they save? must they spend all their money at once? I'm so vexing, what kinda political point? Is it easy to score such political point? They should come to my state, 5 months salaries have not been paid, do they prefer that? I'm sure those complaining does not have kids to buy clothes and every other things for.

  9. Must they spend the money? Nigerians are really difficult to please. You don't pay salary they complain, you pay salary they still complain. Nigerians are very undisciplined and have no self control. If they are disciplined and have self control, they will not spend the money if they don't want or have to. Now they want government to help them manage their bank accounts and expenditure.

Why not pretend like you have not seen alert till that 25th you are meant to be paid?
What of we that our last salary was june? Are we not Living?

Some governors will start using this as an excuse for not paying as at when due.
Planing and self control is really difficult for some people.

The Governor should start owing them from today so they can appreciate him for being fair.

  31. I would think that early payment would enable them facilitate preparations for the yuletide and buy things in earnest to forestall yuletide inflation of prices.

After all, the 13th month salary is paid in November by well meaning companies and people don't complain but welcome it.

Cross Riverians are confused. So they want to collect Dec salary on Christmas day? Mschew!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Princess Scheherazade4 December 2016 at 07:19

Of course, the tendency would be to spend it all by Christmas. Then by the first week in January, they'd be broke.

What they need to do now would be to save most of the money for use in January.

The governor is trying to score cheap points though. It's unheard of, paying a worker for work that he hasn't done, without even being asked.
It's not like he even paid mid month... First of the month!
I mean, they'd probably still have their November salaries.
Policies and procedures are there for a reason.

Sir Ayade as much as I like you, it's too early biko. It should have been 20th-23rd December.

They should be pleased that the State government put their welfare into thought. Why are they even complaining? It shows they're not self discipline when t comes to money.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Nice gesture from Ben Ayade. They should be disciplined in their spending habit and invest. More importantly, get some non perishable items now against the xmas.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Everything still boils down to proper planning and appropriation. I think the Gov did the right thing. Even if he pays on the 23rd as some people demand, some people will still go broke before the Christmas day. Buying the basics now is apt before the prices of things skyrocket. Well done sir.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Stella..the problem with Nigerian civil/public/private workers is lack of financial discipline.
Why are they maoaning when their colleagues in other states are praying for a gesture such as this.
When as a salary earner you do not draw a budget for the month then sorry is your case.
This recession period demands strict personal budget on a list of opportunity cost as secondary school economics would say:define your want and need..hope I got that right.
Man will always remain an insatiable being...ike gwuru.
