FG Bans Importation Of Vehicles Through Land Borders

The federal government Monday said the importation of vehicles into Nigeria through the land borders have been banned.

According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of Customs, Wale Adeniyi, “The prohibition order covers all new and used vehicles.

Adeniyi said, “The ban is sequel to a Presidential Directive restricting all vehicle imports to Nigeria Sea Ports only.

“The order takes effect from 1st January 2017.

Explaining further, he said, “The restriction on importation of vehicles follows that of Rice, whose imports have been banned through the land borders since April 2016.

“Importers of vehicles through the land borders are requested to utilise the grace up till 31st December 2016 to clear their vehicle imports landed in neighbouring ports.”

My God! What a disgusting piece of shit we have for a government. Will there ever be an end to all these harsh policies at such a difficult time? This means higher cost to get in cars... In the end, both the dealers & the consumer would bear the brunt.
Who are the members of that man's economic team? Tired of all the stupid policies put in place by this useless govt.
I can't wait for 2019 to come so they can all be shown the way out.

  20. The reason is so that the importers can pay the relevant duties on the cars at the sea ports. Nigeria needs the money now mbok.

    1. Importers using Cotonou and Lome ports pay duties at the border posts. Check through Google and see how much the FG rakes in monthly through such taxes. Once you have normal papers, nobody, especially Customs will disturb you. The policy reduced smuggling considerably, because once you so it legally, you are free. Only God knows what brought about this policy change again.

  24. Some ppl are getting it wrong, it is not a total ban on car importation, cars can still be imported but through ports so that the importers can pay duties on the imported cars. bad market for some customs officers and smugglers sha.

    1. Who told you they don't pay duty on the ones imported through the land borders? Not only would this cause a spike in the already inflated Tokunbo market, it will also crush the beninoise economy. It is like the Lord poured out the vial of folly on this administration because every step they take reeks of insensitivity and drives them further from the people. Shishe shishe ti deba obuko won.

  30. Nigeria leaders and policy makers don't put on their thinking caps when they make policies, the ban placed on importation of cars through land borders. In essence, there won't be any revenue coming from the land boarders again,it will also bring sour relationship between our next door neighbours, the worst part of it is that the government has created money making avenue for customs and the smugglers.

    ReplyDelete
  31. The ban on importation of cars through our land borders go get as e be. First, it will seriously damage the economy of Benin Republic, Niger Republic and Togo. These countries depend on revenues from imports through their countries to survive.

The second, and most important one is, can Nigeria seriously police its borders? Right now, contrary to an existing policy, officers and men of Nigerian Customs Service are mostly active on our highways. They are not supposed to be mounting road blocks on the highways again. But they have been wrecking havoc with the way they pursue car owners all over the place. This new policy will surely fuel their zeal.

But what I do not understand is the basis for this policy. It will sour relations with our neighbours, whose support we badly need for security and other sundry issues. One had believed that once commensurate taxes have been paid at a border post on such cars, o ti pari. What do I know sef!
