Former Corps Member Claps Back At NYSC- Says They Lied!

This is a former Corps Member's experience in Camp and things happen there....She accuses NYSC of lying and covering that the Corps member who died in Kano did so out of Negligence...She states her reasons why....

So i have been reading about the Female Corp member who died in camp and then NYSC coming out to say she died because of an infection, but they are big liars. Whether she had an infection or not, the fact remains that she died out of NEGLIGENCE!. I say this out of my own experience in camp.

I served in Rivers state (leaving the year out though recent). Im not a sickler but im Anaemic. Unfortunately my menses came on the first week of camp(i bleed heavily), by the second week my body couldnt take the stress of camp anymore, i was too weak to move and down with serious malaria. My friend took me to the sick bay and i asked the "corper nurses" for the doctor and they directed me to the "corper doctor". I said please this is serious i need the doctor because he would be able to check me properly and let the camp officials know that my body was too weak for camp activities.

The corper nurse snapped at me and said if i wanted to see a doctor then i better see the one there. I finally agreed; okay where are the corper doctors? They said one was sleeping because he was tired and the other went to mami. All this was happening while they were gisting and laughing and not even paying attention to me. After waiting for long I had to leave there with my friend supporting me. We went to mami market and i got malaria medication to help myslef first before i collapse. Now those who are familiar with artesunate know that the doses are timed. The next morning i couldnt prepare on time to leave the hostel and the soldiers came to chase, in the whole panic i forgot my medicine on my bed.

They marched us straight to the lecture hall, they wouldnt hear i forgot this or any excuse. I decided to let the tension ease up a bit and obey before complain like they always say. After about 30minutes of lecture i went out and was approaching the soldier manning the road to the hostel. Before i could even get to him he shouted "where you dey go". I told him i was coming to meet him and he dint even listen. Next thing i heard was since you wan stay outside you go do work now. He asked me to start pushing a very big tree till it got to the camp gate. My goodness!!.

I was too shocked to move. He charged at me with his stick like he wanted to hit me and i said please hear me out. Im sick and i forgot my medicine on my bed, thats all i came out for, please just let me get it and go back to lectures. He said if i dont start pushing the tree il frog jump to the gate. I begged this soldier, i said please touch my neck or head so you can feel my temperature,i need to get my medicine now because it works with time(by that time it was already past the 8hour for the next dose). I said sir please follow me to the hostel so you will see the medicine and water right on my bed! So you will know im not lying.

I kept pleading with tears already forming and i had to stop when he pushed me to the tree. Stella,in my weak and sick state with my legs shaking, temperature boiling, beside a crowd of corpers watching from lecture hall i was pushing a tree to the gate. And corpers were laughing and taking pictures. The soldier still had the mind to say i wasnt pushing hard enough or do i prefer to frog jump to the gate?. I dont know if my tears were as a result of shame or pain. I pushed till i couldnt take it anymore,my knees gave in and i sat on the floor, i blocked my ears from all his threats and thought; let him do his worst. He left me there on the floor for over two hours until the RSM came and released everyone on punishment; I still dint get my medicine.

The last week of camp i was stung by electric ant popularly known as papa. It stung me at a very odd place(in between my laps and close to the VJ). Because of where the wound was it couldnt heal and was spreading instead because air wasnt getting to that point and it kept rubbing against the other lap. I had to walk in a funny way. I refused to go to the clinic because of the first experience. I endured using ointment but it worsened. One evening my platoon commander called me out that i will run for the platoon. I told him i couldnt run i had an injury, he said i shouldnt give him any excuses.

I pulled up my shorts and showed him the wound in all its glory(in my mind i have enough evidence). He looked away and still insisted i must run. I was so shocked i stood there looking at him with my mouth open. Next thing i heard was "Shebi you dey disobey orders abi, you be big girl wey no fit run, oya frog jump from here go touch that post". I begged, please my leg is bad, i cant run talk more of frog jump. He started to hala, he would teach me a lesson this and that. The rest of the platoon around(others were scattered about for different games)started begging me to try and do just a few so the punishment doesnt extend to them.

I bent down with difficulty and after the first leap as i landed my wound tore and i felt every bit of the skin cut, the pain was blinding Stella. When he saw the blood he let me be. They took me back to that useless clinic and a corper nurse went to work cleaning or should i say scrubbing it with Gv. Kai. A lot happened again in that hospital but let me leave that as i have said enough already.

This is my own experience of how negligent NYSC is in respect to human life, it is only until you drop dead that they will hear you out.

So they said that beautiful girl died because of the infection she had right?, they shouldnt have bothered talking. When she cried and begged to be taken to the hospital did you listen?,when her family begged you did you listen?, you only listened when she dropped dead. I thank God my case didnt end like this, the only proof i have to this story are images of the injury on my leg. There is no justification for any wrong doing. NYSC lied!.

    2. I believe this BV. I also had a friend who was ill throughout camp we just helped to hide her in d room so she never participated in anything. I'm grateful she did not die in camp. I'm glad I went to camp with the mind set that it wasn't a life or death situation plus God was with me. I sparked for soldier sef only because I didn't know he was a soldier as he wasn't in uniform and everyone was scared and wondering whose child I was wey I get such boldness. Untill someone told me say u know say na soldier be dat I say choi! Lol
Abeg I was ready to leave and forfeit the damn camp rather than do any rubbish. Worse case scenario I go remobilize for the next set and make sure I runz it well to Lagos. Oshisco! As if Nysc na Wetin go feed me in my life. After all the degree certificate wey dey more important pple dey have extra year anyhow dem never die.
Please please if u are ill and in camp and they try all this shit with u« my darlings leave and remobilize for the next batch. If u kpeme for nothing u just do Sara with your life be that.
When people were crying in Bauchi cos they did not approve their redeployment even though mine was approved I did not care. I told them that whether they redeployed or not I'm going back to Lagos sam sam.
On the very last day of camp I left in the morning with my load I did not even wait for the damn parade. Let any soldier or commandant do their worst. Pata Pata dem go strike my name of the list. It's not the end of the world. God bless my parents for sending me a driver from Abuja to come get me. I went with the babe that was ill and anyone else who was bold to follow. No time! Especially cos the night before which was the camp fire was ended abruptly cos there was a scare that Boko haram were spying on us in the bushes and were planning to strike. To think that BH was fresh that time and we did not even know how deadly they were plus some of the soldiers that killed that BH leader then were in our camp gisting us. If u are in danger of any sort leave!!! You can leave! This your life is one o except u know where to buy extra life for market. Just painful that the late corper was so ill and couldn't get up to leave and find her way to a teaching hospital and all that story of corpers are government property mcheww. May d souls of the departed RIP

    1. I served in Rivers state too..after a week in camp,I noticed a blister on my hand..it was strange cos I didn't remember getting burnt or bitten by an insect..i went to the camp clinic to complain and the nurse there gave me Vitamin C and paracetamol.
By the next morning, the blisters spread to all part of my hands, within a few hours,it was all over my body..i went back to the clinic and met the same nurse..first thing she said was,you don come again. I kept quiet and asked to see the doctor.she said the doctor is busy. I went straight to the camp director and told her I want to go home..she laughed so hard and said I'm just being lazy. By now the blister was all over my face and I had a very high temperature. I jejely walked out of her office, called my dad,and within an hour he came with some of his uniform men (he's in the army). I'd already packed my bag cos I know my father.
I ended spending two weeks in the hospital with plenty Iv antibiotics. I had to forgo Nysc o.life important pass. The doctor said had I stayed another day without treatment, sorry would have been my parents name. Today I have a multimillion business I handle. Who nysc epp? Mtcheww

    1. I am glad your anger is pointed towards nysc and not the medical personnel, although it was wrong for a doctor not to be on sit or for a nurse to be that rude or not even attempt to use her medical knowledge to help. Having said that I served in akwa ibom as a Dr, we were under strict instructions not go give more than daily doses of medications, we had the knowledge/skills but no supplies. No medications it got so bad at a point we didn't have paracetamol yes! Anyway we had a presentation by a pharmaceutical company and we requested for some medications, we decided to show the medications to the state coordinator and she seized them, I repeat she seized them saying she has already provided medications for our set. It was so bad that we would give only 2 doses of anti malaria and tell em if u still feel bad come tomorrow. To the corper that died that story is a nonsense story, renal sepsis, who made the diagnosis? And she never complained of abdominal pain? Suddenly she just had kidney failure that relapsed so quickly? Abeg make we hear word!

Then one calm fair nurse igbo nurse came and attended to me, she took good care of me and always asked after my health whenever she sees me. 13. Poster I won't doubt you cos some Nysc camps are like that, nonchalant towards the plight of corps members.

My camp wasn't so though cos my roomie in camp had health issues and immediately we took her there she was attended to and even admitted. I also was given a letter to exempt me from carrying out any stressful activity when I told them in the clinic that I wasn't feeling to well. As for the soldiers/commanders, those ones are trained to be wicked. The only thing that saved me was that I was close to my platoon commander as per assistant platoon leader.

  18. I got angry when I saw the memo or whatever that excuse was they sent to defend nysc when the girl is dead. I had a similar experience in kebbi state. But thank God for the soldier in charge sergeant Nurudeen. One no qualified doctor or nurse. They pack inexperienced medical corpers to the dispensary and this people are very careless. All they are concerned about is bed spaces and smooching their selves .they were even dragging bed space with patients. Thank God for the soldier that ended up teaching them a lesson that morning when he came to the sick bay and met a patient sitting on a chair waiting for the so called doctors to wake up before they attend to him. The point here is Nysc should always make sure there is an experienced medical doctor on camp and they should endeavor to monitor the sick bay.

  19. No disrespect but this is utter rubbish, I'm sure a lot of BVs here have done NYSC & a lot would do in the near future. First of, why didn't you disclose (with doctors report) that you were anemic when you reported to camp? Secondly, I'm an ordinary Nigerian like everyone else but a soldier in NYSC camp has no right & cannot put their hands on, they can only scare & threaten you. So because you succumbed to his threats & your fear doesn't give any basis to bash NYSC like you did. You're screaming NEGLIGENCE while your offense is DECEIT & WITHHOLDING INFORMATION. None of us here can truly say what lead to that death in Kano, it's all assertions and hear say but let this be a warning to those yet to do NYSC...camp IS NOT BY FORCE!!! If you have health issues, DISCLOSE it from the onset, if possible come with doctors report. If you're truly sick and any official is pushing you beyond your limits, BOLDEN UP & STAND YOUR GROUND, they're NOT allowed to touch or beat you. Unfortunately that pretty girl is GONE & NYSC will still come in many batches.

  22. I beg to differ,It's not all the NYSC officials that re neglectful.I'm currently serving at Kogi State and during our orientation camp,I purposely went to mami market with my frd to stroll just to avoid camp activities,A soldier caught us and sent us back to the parade ground. On our way going to the parade ground,We encountered another soldier who wanted to punish us for catwalking instead of running😆😆😆.Chai! I had to think of a fast way to escape his punishment..All of a sudden,I started breathing heavily like an asthmatic patient. My friend was bewildered because I wasn't asthmatic so why all of a sudden I'm now asthmatic..I sensed her confusion and blinked my eyes at her to play along.hahahahahaha.Soldier comot cap o,start dey fan me o.'Go and call the nurse, why you dey laff? Witch!,person wan die you dey laff Shege waka' he shouted at my frd who was laughing at my dramatic skills. She went and called the camp nurse on duty,Together the 3 of them jacked me off to the medical facility. After the soldier left,I bursted out laughing...'So you nor no say if I nor act drama we go frog jump inside potorpotor' I said to my frd who was still laughing..Till I left camp,This soldier always made sure I didn't get punished because 'I be asthmatic patient' according to him. God forbid sha.Another mischievous boy claimed he had Tuberculosis in order to be redeployed back home and placed a bet with his frds that he was gonna be successful with his mischievous plans.Come and see the way this guy was quickly taken to the medical facility and was told to get all his belongings. The yeye boi went to his hostel, collected the bets from his frds which was abt 15k and carried his luggage on his head like person wey dey go farm.😅😅😅That very day,the guy was sent home sharply. So not all the camp officials re careless please.most ve kids and treated us like their children.

    3. Madam you can only speak for yourself. You can't be too sure of what happened else where. I served few years back and went to the camp with my Doctors report to facilitate my redeployment, but the camp director said I was lying. On my way to the camp clinic the commandant asked I and my friends to start running and I explained to him that I couldn't run and had and exemption letter but he declined he forced me to run. I was one of the camp Doctors and they didn't agree to redeploy me until I had crisis at the camp and they were running up and down. So talk for yourself.

    4. But the issue being raised here is that the camp clinic is not equipped. For the minutest ailment which is wrong. You don't call people to come for 3wks or more and not prepare for them.

    5. @anonymous 19:51,sorry abt ur experience, the issue is dat those camp officials are strict because many people carry fake medical report to camp, the don't really know who is malingering, but once a case is proven n confirmed, they usually redeploy the person. In ur case,it may be because u ar a doctor and they felt they needed you in camp especially if the doctors were few.

  40. All the stories about NYSC reminds me of what my elder brother told me when I was about leaving home for camp and trust me it helped. He said remember,'Nothing is by force. Not even life. People can choose to live or take their life' In view of this, I didn't participate in dirty, risky and annoying things like climbing / walking on a tiny rope even when many did it for pictures. I wouldn't match in the rain, though others did. I was the first to take Permission to fall out. I also remember I fell ill n was shivering and the silly Corper doctor wanted to shove my case aside but when I gave him the great osuite look,he sat up. As an OSU babe, you are taught how to stand your ground and get what you desire and not be pushed around.

  41. You people should stop lying...camp was fun and soldier has the right to touch you. You will know you're sick but still insist on doing camp activities. Carry your letter and go clinic jeje if you're sick and u will be expempted...stop blaming nysc for your own negligence. The doctors and nurses in camp are corpers like yourself, they dont get paid a dime...the least u can do is be grateful. #dontscrapnysc

  43. I served in Lagos and d camp clinic is iat best a sick bay, our main purpose was to identify, stabilize and refer serious cases. Truth is that most that present would just be down with malaria, stress and minor illnesses though of course there would be those with more life threatening conditions. Ideally if you have a chronic medical condition let them know at the camp. Either get exemption or come with your meds.
The issue as with everything in out health system is not really the manpower, but equipments etc. you cant even run tests etc so biko its a sick bay not a clinic. If its not stocked even if u bring consultant specialist, prof emeritus best she would do is refer also.

  46. they should scrap this nysc or better still remove the camp part. why would nigeria subject her graduates to all the inhuman treatment that happen in nysc camp, if its not overcrowded dorm, its inadequate food or punnishment from illitrate soldiers.
