NYSC Releases Statement On The Loss Of 3 Corps Members During The On-Going 2016 Batch 'B' Orientation Course

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has released a statement addressing the loss of three corps members in different camps across Nigeria, recently. The Management has promised to set up a committee to investigate the immediate and remote causes responsible for the loss.The statement reads;

RIP

The National Youth Service Corps regrets the loss of three Corps members, Elechi Chinyerum Nwenenda, Oladepo Ifedolapo (Read here) and Asuquo Ukeme Monday, (Read here) during the on-gong 2016 Batch ‘B’ (Stream I) Orientation Course in Bayelsa, Kano and Zamfara States respectively.

The death of the trio followed brief illnesses and after medical teams in the camps battled to save them in line with established procedures. Their demise, coming in their prime time when they were bracing up for further roles towards advancing their respective families, the nation and the rest of humanity, came as a rude shock to us in the NYSC family.

On behalf of the Management, staff and Corps members nationwide, I wish to express our sincere condolences to the families of the deceased Corps members. May the Almighty God grant them eternal rest and give their families and the rest of us the fortitude to bear the irreparable losses.

While we mourn the demise of these Corps members, who, out of patriotic zeal, answered the clarion call to serve their fatherland, we are constrained to correct the impression of negligence being created in some quarters. Management wishes to state that the welfare of Corps members has always remained topmost in the priorities of the Scheme, and we have continued to strive to give our best in that regard. The policy of the Scheme regarding healthcare during Orientation course provides for the setting up of camp clinic manned by qualified Doctors and other Corps Health Personnel.

The clinics, which are also provided with drugs and other basic equipment, are detailed to render round-the-clock medical services on camp with standing arrangement to refer and ensure immediate movement of patients to more sophisticated health facilities when necessary. We want to inform the public that medical teams in our camps have always been guided by the procedures of practice and in the most professional ways possible.

However, in view of these unfortunate incidents in Bayelsa, Kano, and Zamfara states, Management has set up a high-powered committee to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the loss the Corps members.

Management appreciates the concern of stakeholders, and wishes to assure the general public, especially serving and prospective Corps members as well as parents and guardians that the Scheme will continue to take measures aimed at ensuring the security and general well being of youths enlisted to serve the nation on the platform of the Scheme.

  19. They should just stop lying biko. The only doctors in the camp clinics in most camps are corps members. And the drugs are insufficient. Mainly antimalaria, antibiotics and first aid. At least that's all we found in camp when I was there two years ago. If there's anything more or complicated wrong with a Corp member, the drug will have to be bought outside, most times by the patient.

  20. Hmm I pray the deaths won't continue considering the way things are

  21. I hope the investigating team do a thorough investigation, enough of the premature deaths of our young men and women in camps; deaths most caused by negligence and wickedness.

May they all rest in peace.

  22. Their deaths were mainly due to negligence on the path on NYSC. I experienced it myself and if not for God, I'm sure I won't be here. Same thing happened to a friend of mine, they ignored her pains and thought she was faking them to get a redeployment. Its rather unfortunate tho

  23. Like they actually care, i was sick and had to be given exeat so i could get antimalarial outside the camp....clarion call that keeps devastating families.

  25. I know it's against nysc rules for a sick person to be camped. I blame the sick people going to camp. If you have any health issues, for your sake indicate

    1. Mumu. Did u @ any point read that they were ill before being camped? Ewu Gambia! That is how people fail exams. Give comprehension A to answer, see them giving answers to imaginary texts. Be gone already.

  26. Government should scrap NYSC, it's total waste of money. Instead they should encourage the graduates on programs that will lead some to self employment. Such programs shouldn't be mandatory aswell. Some individuals are billionaires being NYSC directors while those who participate are left to suffer.
Places those graduates are kept are not even suitable for pigs.
    Scrap that shit....

  27. Which medical team? I fell sick in Edeh camp , Osun state twice. U need to see the yellow bitter malaria drug they gave me. Tufiakwa!!
Na God save me. I told them i needed rest, they felt i was dodging drills.
I had to beg my camp boyfriend who had a friend inside d clinic for a written note i can present to d soldiers. Wat if i slumped ??? Not everyone is used to bathing cold water or waking up 3 am constantly for 1 week not to talk of 3 weeks.
Rip to the dead corps members.

NYSC shld still not be scrapped. They shld just improve on their medical services and be a bit accomodating wen corps members complain of ill-health.

  28. We hear una, make dem investigate well cos with dis there statement matter don end be dat, we no go hear about dis matter again Nigeria my country.

  29. Will the investigation bring their kids back.
They should just scrap the thing already. See the state the corpers are living, I'm sure where they lock up suspects in EFCC is not as bad. How do they expect humans to live like that.
if one is even sick, how do you expect to recuperate under those conditions. And all those their parades, not everyone can withstand such things. Especially sickle cell patient, asthmatic and epileptic patients.
With this recession I am sure the conditions and food they are being given will even be worse.
I think it is time senate proposes the dissolution of those death camps.
