NYSC Says Death Of Kano Corps Member Is Due To Untreated Infection

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC on Tuesday attributed the death of a 2016 Batch ‘B’ (Stream I) corps member, Ifedolapo Oladepo, to an untreated renal sepsis infection.

Recall that Ifedolapo Oladepo, died at the NYSC orientation camp in Kano State last week Tuesday and was laid to rest on Thursday.

In view of this, the management had set up a high-powered committee to investigate the immediate and remote causes.

Investigations carried out by the panel of inquiry set up to look into the cause of her death, have now been disclosed.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, and Director General of the NYSC, Brig-General Suleiman Kazaure, presented the panel’s report in Abuja on Tuesday.

They debunked media reports that Ifedapo died due to negligence from the medical team in the camp, attributing Ifedolapo’s death to her refusal to disclose an ailment she had been battling with before resuming to camp.

The report stated: “From the doctors’ report, the corps member died of renal sepsis occasioned by infection.

“Even, to the untrained, kidney infections do not develop and degenerate to the level of mortality in three days (i.e 7th to 29th November, 2016).

“The deceased first appeared at the camp clinic with complaints of headache and fever, which she said she had been experiencing for two days.

“On examination, the doctors on duty noticed rashes on her legs, which she claimed started appearing as a result of her use of a second-hand knickers she bought without first washing it.

“Doctors noticed increase in the rashes on her legs, the deceased still dismissed it as a reaction to usage of a second-hand knicker.

“By this time, she had been vomiting. Therefore, she was admitted at the camp clinic and treated with Drazamol injection and Piriton to soothe her body pains as she was already on malaria drugs.

“After her case degenerated, she was immediately referred to Gwarzo General Hospital for further treatment, where, after examination, the doctor concluded that the deceased had kidney infection probably due to untreated urinary tract infection.

“The investigation showed that the deceased responded well until about 2:00am on 29th November when her condition worsened, and her body began to show noticeable signs of fluid retention.

“She was thereafter placed on oxygen as the doctors battled to stabilise her for the long journey to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.

“It is clear that the deceased had an ailment which she did not disclose.”

    2. Please a doctor in the house should throw more light on having a urinary tract infection that could develop into a kidney disease.

    3. Nonsense coming from them... why won't they say infection killed her since she is not alive to defend herself.. may she rest on.. rubbish

    4. So now patients must tell doctors what their ailment is before they can diagnose? Isn't that what they were supposed to figure out?

    5. What does she had an ailment she didn't disclose mean? What if she didn't know about the ailment?

She isn't a doctor, she may suffer symptoms but may not know what the issue is. If a patient suffers from constant headaches, it maybe blood pressure, malaria, typhoid or anything. It is the duty of the doctor to run tests and give a prognosis.

NYSC should stop scoring cheap points and quit trying to cover up their incompetence. They were not proactive. How convenient to blame the dead, bunch of laggards!!

    1. What has fear of God got to do with this? The public demanded an explanation, NYSC has provided one but NO...it is the initial story negligence that has to fly and MUST be true? There are 3 sides to every story...your side, my side & the TRUTH! Unfortunately this young Nigerian has passed & the least we can do as you rightly said is to let her family mourn her peacefully but I also think it's very unfair to castigate NYSC like that & throw them under the bus. In this country we seem to put life secondary and everything else before it. If truly she had an undisclosed ailment, there's no shame in being sick (it's a natural phenomenon) however if you choose not to disclose it then you can't get the help that you need. NYSC isn't a do or die affair...no need risking everything else just to earn a certificate. Igbo people say Ndubuisi...life first.

  6. The dead cannot rise up and speak. They should stop making this girl keep crying in the grave. It is enough. If the girl spirit is strong, she should use koboko on all of them.

Let her rest in peace. No matter what you said, cannot bring her back.

    1. I'm not believing NYSC but what if she truly had UTI that caused the renal failure and didn't disclose it? Whose fault is it? When my wife did camp, pregnant women were LYING just to be able to stay in camp. I told her to even flash her belly to prove she's pregnant & jejely come home. Na pesin wey dey alive dey do NYSC.

    2. Wow I have no words for you! I pray you or your loved one never fall victim to the Nigerian system of excuses. If she told them she has a UTI, will they treat her without first testing her?You mean that the hospital cannot do a simple urine test as part of diagnosing an illness especially when one has a fever? Urine test is one of the FIRST things that a competent hospital should do. Smh. And you cannot just know someone is pregnant by looking at their belly! Jeez! I can't believe I'm even responding to this crap that you wrote. Please think before you type. Not everything is for attention. RIP to the young lady.

  9. The problem with Nigeria is that we have liars,I mean unrepentant liars as leaders, they can never be wrong. Their conscience is dead.unless it affects them personally,it is not an issue.with few lies you can get it out of the way.human lives means nothing to our leaders, the only that matters is his position and the money that enters his pocket.
Let them always remember that the reign of evil is always temporary, one day the people will rise from their slumber and the evil in the land will be destroyed. They and their dead conscience will be flushed out of Nigeria.
    Nigeria will be great again.

  16. Trying to exonerate the incompetence of the half-baked youth corpers doctors. Practicing doctors that normally misdiagnose in Naija, talkless of corpers. Ok,why wasn't she rushed to a teaching hospital? Instead, was taken to a hospital with no doctor in sight. That's how my aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer and given a timeliness to die. On getting to London,it was found out that,it was just hormonal imbalance

  18. Why would she "hide" the fact that she had u.t.i; an easily diagnosable and equally treatable illness...plus the temporal profile of the symptoms leading up to her death don't add up...

    1. @dr Samba are you really a doctor? Or a quack.Whose job is it to diagnose? She is not a doctor for God's sake. You have no case trying to defend the incompetence of the so called doctors.

  21. Was there an autopsy? How did they arrive at the conclusion that she had a disease/illness she didn't disclose? Even if she didn't disclose, she complained to the doctors who saw the symptoms yet they couldn't diagnose the disease/illness. NYSC should respect itself and just not make further comments on the issue.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The bottom line is at every NYSC camp there needs to be at least one qualified dr who reviews cases attended to by the corper drs. If Urine analysis were done on time, or her case promptly transferred to the hospital quickly, they might have been able to treat her at the early stages of sepsis which is easier to manage. May her soul RIP. However, its important that as a country, we learn from this ordeal

My neighbor did not allow her only daughter to go to any stupid NYSC in the North.
