Service Year Boulevard 21

Did you pass through the service year or it passed through you?

Greetings to you, Frau Dimoko-Korkus!

When I tried to remember what year I started reading your blog, I couldn’t. Been here like forever and it would only sound right to appreciate the good works you are doing here. Vielen Dank.

In light of the recent happenings in NYSC camps, I would love to recount my NYSC experience. I served in batch C of 2011. My bad luck with NYSC started when I went to register and was told at the Gowon house (NYSC HQ) that foreign graduates starting from our batch can no longer choose the state they want to serve in.

I immediately knew I was in for one hell of a ride. This wasn’t what I bargained for. I had no plans to serve anywhere else but in Abuja. They posted us randomly. I was scared because it was at the heat of attacks from Boko haram but Abia state appeared on my posting letter. I was like ‘It could have been worse’. I read my letter well and it clearly stated no vehicles allowed in camp but I wasn’t having it. I drove to camp.

I was still very fragile for the country not to talk of the harsh camp conditions. It was the best decision ever. After two days in camp, I couldn’t take it anymore. I moved permanently into my car, it was parked out of sight, under a shade and covered with tarpaulin. I was sleeping in the car, no morning parade, no nothing. I only appeared when I wanted to and mostly at night to go and chill at mami. I had two other corps members that parked beside me, we formed a little gang. I no find camp boo, camp boo no find me, I was even wondering how them folks be hugging upandan when they haven’t even properly showered + I no go camp to find boo.

I just couldn’t wait to leave camp. For PPA I was sent to a village formerly known to have cannibals among them, Stella, I didn’t spend a night in the place.

In short, my principal rejected me immediately, I reported to the NYSC office and they could read it in my eyes that I wasn’t ready to stay there. Later, I redeployed back to Abuja. NYSC experience taught me a lesson and made me understand that Nigeria as a country wasn’t ready for any change in the nearest future.

Buhari CANNOT save Nigeria. Das Land ist ganz kaputt.

The secretary in NYSC HQ won’t attend to you quickly unless you offer a little token. The platoon officers won’t post you according to your qualification if you don’t go to meet them and arrange that with a little envelope in your hand. The worst thing is that it has become a norm that nobody sees anything wrong with it.

The system doesn’t care about qualifications. Distribution and transmission of jobs are given to alhajis, friends and relatives without any basic skills. I actually asked myself, if I stayed back in Nigeria and had kids, how will I convince them that education is rewarding when fools, agberos and touts are running the country, from National Assembly to the presidency.

After service, I parked my bags and left.

NYSC should be made optional, I met people who were genuinely happy to serve but I always met folks like me who were forced to serve. I gained NOTHING from NYSC except for the free packets of WHO condoms they gave out in CDS.

Mit den besten Grüßen aus Erfurt.

  4. You are no different honey.
You came here expecting to be treated better than the rest.
    You flouted laid down rules.
Bribed your way out of a state you were posted to.
I'm sure you know what our dear Aristotle said.
You could have stood your ground, and effected the change you wanted... but you gave bribe.

It became a norm because people like you and I refused to change things,we gave bribe and ran.

    2. Anon 15:41 because it makes no sense. The only people benefiting from it are your corrupt leaders and people demanding bribe to actualize anything. Recent news of camp deaths has proven that NYSC does more harm than good.

You see nothing wrong with it because you have adapted yourself to the jungle lifestyle.

  7. "Formerly known" I had no time to confirm if they were still into such practices or not. And it wasn't any of the two communities you just mentioned but go ahead and mention more, that way we could get to know all them communities with such legendary past hehe.

  9. Oshey! Rude corper. Hope you took your bath inside your car? See how you totally condemned your country,no wonder the foreigners call us monkeys. I'm sure you even join them in calling us baboons. If everyone should run away like you,who will pioneer the thoughts and actions to make the country a better place to live in? Aunty/bro foreign qualifications, don't ever come back to Naija o. Trace your roots in the abroad and don't give your children local names. How did you even escape parade and all other activities? You bribed them na. You are encouraging corruption too. GTFOH.

    1. He spoke the truth. Nigeria should scrap NYSC and concentrate their resources in fighting corruption. I was an international graduate too and you had to bribe your way to be posted to the big multinational companies.

  28. I can appreciate this write up on one major count, and that is the fact that the writer called attention to the extent of malpractices involved in public issues in Nigeria: the school system and the employment system. In his/her conceptualisation, bribery and lack of commitment to duty militate against the basic minimum functioning of the Nigerian society. I do not welcome his choice of words but I see in it a person who was entirely failed by a "country" (presuming that Nigeria is a country) that has the responsibility to offer him the most basic rights that come with our being human. He was meant to serve but at the same time meant to bribe, he/she came back to use what he/she studied as the instrument of service but this was not given any recognition. Such pains, especially when you have known it otherwise for many years where things function the right way. I can understand his/her pain, but without excusing his/her usage of words like cannibals and his/her giving to the idea that Nigeria may not be better through efforts, including his/hers. I also read through a lot of other comments and condemnation of his write up. One thing I want to say is that when one lives his entire life in Nigeria where evil is seen as good, corruption is praised, criminality is celebrated, idiocy is cherished and good is punished, it becomes very easy to condemn a write up like this. Nigeria is a mess, NYSC in Nigeria is a mess, the public culture in Nigeria is a mess. It does not need his/her saying it or not saying it for it to be so. Pouring words of condemnation on his/her post and calling him names will not sanitize Nigeria. Instead, it is a wrong approach. The write approach is more trying to appreciate the points he/she raised and changing our personal attitude in the public arena.
