Drama On Mercy Aigbe's IG Handle...

There is some kind of drama going on .....This lovely top Actress Mercy Aigbe had on in this photo is causing some kind of brouhaha..Read and advice who needs to be advised....

Here's the Story

Hephzibah Funmi Akin-Ajayi @phoonmy_afrika
wrote:

I'm hurt now o.
Sometimes late last year, Mercy Aigbe Gentry had an agreement with me through another actress to wear one of our shirts and give the credit to us on social media.
She sounded so sweet on phone on that day.
Yesterday, she wore it and didn't do as agreed.
I even saw it on Valerie' facebook group.
So I sent her messages on instagram asking her to do as agree and she apologised saying that she'll fix it.

Today, she blocked me on Instagram, deleted our messages and then gave the credit to another fashion designer.

Can you imagine?
She mentiomed the skirt designer but didn't mention mine.
This Top ... she didn't pay a dime for it.

I contacted our link and she told me Mercy said that she could return the shirt.
I asked her to return it sharp sharp and she said she's not even returning again that I should do my worst!
Imagine!

Now Funmi's friends have done all possible to nicely reach out to Mercy Aigbe Gentry on Ig, asking her to credit the REAL MAKER of the FREE shirt she was wearing but instead, she went on a deleting spree, blocking all who called her out to do the RIGHT THING.
Attached are some of the comments nicely asking MAG to do the needful but she wouldn't let them see the light of day.

Mercy ... She whom the gods will kill, they will first of first make mad, retrace your steps and do the right thing now.

    5. Give honour to whom honour is due. Bigger celebrities home and abroad have worn clothes made by regular people, and credited them. It isn't about who made it, it is how well it was made. Do the right thing madam mercy.

    8. An agreement is an agreement, what Mercy did was wrong and disrespectful. The designer should also learn to be diplomatic in situations like this.

    9. Calling her out this way has not helped their brand. Two wrongs do not make a right. Mercy was wrong but the designer too.

    10. Now I know they don't buy all these clothes I have been wondering how they spend so much on outfits

    11. Tooorr.. Mercy did wrong, but the shirt maker should chill na. I know it's painful when the credits due your hard work is being diverted, it can be infuriating.

But let's think about it, what would it cost mercy to advertise them as she did the skirt maker, if their approach wasn't rude? Uhm? From what I can see here, the shirt maker seems like a trouble maker who thinks that by calling mercy out she'd be known. She shouldn't have embarrassed her na. We all know she can afford the shirt.

Fine, mercy agreed to model their shirt, hence it was given her free of charge. That's the practice with celebs worldwide, you give them your merchandise for free and u get recognized. So Mercy here didn't keep to the rules of the game..no doubt.. But I think the shirt maker is too jumpy. Na my own be dat eh.

      OK bye

    12. Exactly Sisi Eko, you mirrored my thoughts. If she didn't give credit to either of them then I will fault her completely. What did tsmartcouture do differently? Funmis side of the story sounded too simple and one sided. Why did mercy give credit to the skirt maker? I think there is more to this.
Then you have to jump in and start calling her names that's totally bad. If someone breaches a contract, then go about it legally. Mercy didn't tarnish their brand, she just didn't promote it but they had done a smear campaign on MAG. Whatever, if someone does something as grevious as killing your child, hurt cannot make it right to kill them also. Justice might take time to be served but it will be done. Now they have played God, what next? Other celebs will boycott them sharp sharp, it is a two way thing.

      Delete
    13. Sisi Eko do a research on the shirt owner. She isn't a trouble maker or one who would like to seek cheap popularity. And my friend wasn't too jumpy plssss

    14. Sisi, na where your comment de sweet me be this.
You nailed it. My exact thoughts, I have nothing to add.

    15. What now makes the designer different from the names she called mercy.
Women pulling down women, you just did the same thing.
I belong, that same thing made you desperately give out your work for free, just to belong.
If it were a normal person like me, will you even give me a discount?
Mercy, we await your robust reply. I was wondering why the designer didn't share the "polite messages" dats what they always do, could that be where the problem lies? Na wah!
I remember how we judged Tontoh until Dencia fell into the same pit the girl almost blackmailed tonto into.

    16. Gbam!!!!! Sis Eko... I thought I was strange to have had the same thoughts as you. I fear who no fear this designer. Cos she wld disgrace you if you mistakegly owe her debt. I am not mercy but who knows how the woman went about it. She for truly post the chat wey mercy delete. Mercy please next time do the right thing and give credit to the designer even if you pay for it. Help small business grow.

    17. @Sisi Eko....
      Let's break this down together.

1 - The shirt maker chillingly contacted her when she saw the credits. She didn't make any troubles

2 - The shirt maker couldn't have been rude to get Mercy's attention, enough for her to say 'She'll do the right thing and tag Funmi'

3 - The shirt maker is well known and NEVER a trouble maker. Tested and Trusted. You don't know her, do you?
We know her and that's why we are pained.

4 - Mercy asked for the embarrassment. She went ahead to DELETE AND BLOCK THE SHIRT MAKER, Why????? If the shirt maker reached out to Mercy without informing the Social Media world, why can't Mercy reach out to her also in a matured way? That is what I call BALANCE.

5 - There was an agreement, things happen and the arrangements may change but there's a commonsensical way of doing things if your motives and intents are pure and genuine.

6 - We all know she can afford the shirt, where is her Milk of kindness? Does any ever flow from her breast? The shirt maker is not begging bread or even begging for you to buy it. Wear it, tag me, promote my business and let me sew more and make a decent living.
*****Wickedness is when you can afford it but killing the shine of an entrepreneur who made and gave you freely to wear in exchange for an endorsement*****
      SIMPLE TAG O.

7 - Define Jumpy and I'll be able to respond to that point.

Finally ... until we start to hold people accountable for their wrong doings and binning sentiments, we will never make a headway in having a sane society.

      Regards

    18. Thank you @Jummy. From what I read up there, I didnt see where the shirtmaker was jumpy. But Mercy has always been an arrogant one when things dont go her way. Every one cant famz her naa. She should just do the needful and spare herself the embarrassment.

    19. Some of you people are getting it all wrong though. It is the normal practice all over the world for designers and even manufacturers to give well known celebrities their clothes and products free of charge to wear or use in public. All the clothes J-lo, Jennifer Aniston, Lupita, Rihanna etc wear to awards are usually given to them free of charge to give those designers more publicity. Sometimes, several designers would be competing with one another to get 1 celebrity to pick their dress over others and thereby leaving the celebrity with wardrobe full of unworn free clothes after making their choice. Manufacturers of gadgets etc also do the same and the celebrities would be papped using their gadgets which would attract the curiosity of their fans and thereby earn the manufacturers more publicity and sales of their products.

So what MAG did by wearing free clothes is not an awoof move, it comes with her territory. Also what the designer did by giving her clothes free of charge was not a desperate move either. It's actually a very smart move.

Now, I think MAG should have given props to the designer after wearing her clothes especially per agreement and irrespective of the misunderstanding, an agreement is an agreement. It wouldn't have cost her anything to do that. But it looks like there's more to the story for her to purposely ignore the shirt designer and only give props to the skirt designer. I don't care what her friends are trying to say or what picture they're trying to paint here but there's more to the story that they're not telling us. Something definitely transpired that made things sour. It could have been strong head or bruised ego on Mercy's part that got her to act the way she did but y'all can't tell me she just switched for no reason. It could have even been misunderstanding on both part, wrong attitude etc.

Also, phoonmy's friends they are trying to defend her. You probably know what exactly transpired and you want to stick up for your friend because you'll always have your friend's back and see things from her point of view. That's very well and commendable of you guys. But if you want the best for her, you would think outside the box, drop the emotional hat and put on the business hat. The whole thing is more tarnishing to her brand than it is to MAG. The worst for mag is that people who are not familiar with the way things work would see her as someone who wears awoof but her endorsements, business, acting career etc would not be affected. On the other hand, your friend is not that known yet, this being her introduction to a wide audience of potential clients is brand-damaging. You people know your friend very well and can vouch for her but for everyone else, this drama is their first impression of her. It'll discourage people from patronizing her. You gouts could have gone about this a completely different way.

Since you've all refused to tell us what exactly caused the misunderstanding and change of heart/attitude, at least to get her to still keep to her own end of the bargain. Instead of tweeting at her to give props, you could have innocently commented that the outfit looks good on her and asked her who designed it like curious fans. You could have copied the pic and tagged your friend. (I'm not too familiar with social media especially tweeter/instagram) If she has other celeb friends/clients as you commented above that she's well-known, she could have them ask questions and put indirect pressure on Mercy or even enlist the help of you- her friends to make comments asking who designed the clothes etc (not sure what the culture is amongst fans and celebs in Nigeria) but you could curve things to her advantage somehow without denting the shirt maker's image in the process and once she gets her positive publicity and more clients, she can cut ties with mercy asap since their personalities don't seem to jell.

    2. Pipi, the shirt designer sounds very unprofessional and rude.
Mercy isn't stupid, something must have motivated her 'nastiness' towards the designer afterall she gave credits to the skirt designer so what's the big deal in doing so to the shirt designer? Yes, Mercy was wrong not to give credit at the tail end but same time business owners should learn to be diplomatic with their clients not throw words carelessly like touts

      Delete
    3. Bloggie, she was rude and uncouth, I agree and not professional; but, Mercy should have paid immediately for the shirt when this came up and not let it linger, pay for it and do not bother about giving credits.
If they are wearing major brands, they do not forget to give credits. This shirt was given to her last year, the designer must have been waiting to see it on her page since forever, then, she finally sees it through another page, no credit given, goes to Mercy's page, still no credit, reminds her about the deal, she got blocked...no no no, nobody will take that lightly.
I'm very sure Mercy didn't forget, even if she forgot while posting, she should have remembered immediately after it got posted and edited.

  23. Haha. But I don't blame mercy. I blame upcoming entrepreneurs who feel they always have to kiss 'celebrities' ass before they can make it in Nigeria. They force you to buy/wear their stuff and turn around when you do a 360. Like that one who begged tontoh to patronise her bag business. See what happened? A popular mainland boutique owner walked out on me because a Nigerian 'celeb' walked into her store to buy stuff. I just paid for my stuff and left. Later I heard how she and the bleached actress were fighting after that one got stuff for almost 700k and didn't pay back after she don post the girl pics for her IG as a regular customer. . I laughed!! Shebi una dey look face?

My dressmaker friend makes at least 300k a week in abuja. Her store is her mum's bq. Shes so quiet that she runs her business like her personality. She doesn't need a 'celeb'to give her credit. Her job speaks for her. She goes as far as seoul for her fabrics. And she has very top clients. Recently a popular naija celeb contacted her about her outfit for next AMVCA. And she told her point blank she doesnt need anyone to help advertise her clothes so she doesnt give freebies. But can give complementary accesory. And the person agreed. The bible says 'A man's gift would make a way for him'. You don't need a celebrity to validate your craft. Stop chasing them and spend more time building on your skills. Very soon you will be sought after by them.

    3. We dont want the credits again. She should angrily return the shirt. Just the way they name Hurricanes after the first person who sights them, we will put the shirt on a Mannequin and name it *Iwanshine*

    4. She was called out after they reached out to her to give credit. Not before.

    5. Maybe you don't get it. Mercy us already shining, that is why your friend could have given her the shirt for free because it would mean a great breakthrough for her if Mercy had tagged her in the picture.
Mercy has always given credits for everything even make up so I wonder why this time was different.
It's like someone calling SDK out for not crediting a particular source. If SDK did that, something went wrong somewhere but if it was Linda, we wouldn't be surprised.
In short, tell your friend to work harder and let her work advertise her. And Mercy should always give credit

  39. Mercy is one local mgbeke trying to be funky. She wants to call big designer names so that her local ass kisser followers will hail her. Mercy is not one of the classy and elegant actresses. She doesn't measure up at all. All I see is mgbeke trying so hard to belong.

Mercy Aigbe why? What is so hard in giving the blouse designer her due credit, for a blouse you slay in.....

I feel so disappointed by this inconsiderate act by Mercy. The designer is now well known while you Mercy have just tarnished your image.

Nigerian celebrity should learn to promote upcoming designers that are good with their crafts.

Something must have gone wrong somewhere bcs those who visit her Instagram page will bear witness to d fact that she doesn't post half but full pics. Pls always hear parties out before conclusions

  53. I am not saying what Mercy did is wrong or right, but to an extend the designer and her friends are wrong, by putting such on an handle, saying credit the shirt designer, what stop the designer from wearing are top herself for advert, abeg the way we ladies want to bring down this celeb is too much, the insult was way too much, as if she stole it, oya go and collect it by force na, yeye
