Eating Eba With Cutlery VERSUS Using Hands.

What do you think about using hands to eat Eba and Soup (of choice)?

Well, dont bash me but i agree with her..You can never catch me using hand to eat Any food at all...LOL.
You are free to disagree but state your reasons why you think i am wrong.
I dont have any reason apart from the fact that i hate to see my hand all messed up with food and then the smell never goes away...
LOL

There's a way you eat decently with your hands, not the way mist of our Yoruba's eat with the soup running down their hands and then they lick it all the way back up....lol

Swallow is Nigerian native food and we were trained to eat it with our hands...the trick (the way my mama taught us) is to eat with your fingers, cutting each piece of eba just enough to swallow -no extra, you then mold into a tiny ball and take with soup

      Neat and decent!

No soup on your hands, definitely no soup/oil soiling your eba

  16. Why does she have to put "with no home training"? That's where she made a mistake.

For me, I don't eat eba but when it comes to semo and amala, I use cutlery. I don't eat fufu too, it has a really nasty nauseating smell.
Why I use cutlery is because I feel, it's nasty putting your hand from one plate to another but some people claim its sweeter using your hand to eat 'swallow'
..basically it depends on the individual, I would have included the occasion too but I know a lady who uses her hands to eat 'swallow' no matter the occasion and this has endeared her to many people. Some people would meet her after the occasion and tell her "I like the way you weren't forming while eating" and I'm usually like who says eating with cutlery is forming??... Well, I guess different strokes for different folks.

Yes, it's disrepectful to eat pounded yam with fork. Stop being disrespectful to food!

Stick to pasta if you love the fork so much.

but when im home,i wash my hands well;mould the Eba very well to my satisafction, throw it up and catch it again, then dip into the soup and swallow..Thats why i enjoy eating Eba at home!! and ooohhh,i prefer Fufu to Eba..

About the smell after using your hands to eat,any good detergent can do that for you..but i always prefer eating before taking my bath;cos no matter how strong the "smell" of the fufu/Eba is,it will surely go off after using a good soap to bath

Let me re-phrase the question for that Omalara kid up there: why the heck should any sane person use fork to eat a purely African dish like eba? Eba is our traditional food, and it is best enjoyed when eaten with the hand. I have never eaten "swallow" with a fork, and NEVER will!

It's not about proper home training it's part of our tradition as a country and I see nothing wrong with it. Even the whites when they come over to visit sometimes they bring themselves to using their hand just to feel at home. Both ways I see nothing wrong it all lies in the world you find yourself.

I can't even imagine myself eating fufu with fork kai! I tried eating amala with fork at a wedding and I regretted choosing amala. Eating traditional dishes isn't a way of displaying how mannered and decent you are abeg.
Stella so you dey chop starch with fork? Oshe mami!

  50. The last time I checked, every country and continents has their culture and some traditions.

Eating eba, amala, akpu, starch and whatever delicious soup you decided to eat it with with fork (cutlery) is an insult to the people and place where the food is originated from!

I watch a lot of Anthony Bourdaen and Andrew Zimmern, I see them visiting trying different foods and most times, they had to abide by the rules of the people(following the table manners).

There are different ways to eat different food in different places.
I hate it when I see people eat amala and soup with forks, worse is them eating starch with cutlery.

  69. Girl you didn't have to put that line about home training, because it doesn't have anything to do with it.

In some parts of India, they use hand to eat rice, some don't even care if they are in public...so I don't think is lack of home training. I mean that's what one is comfortable with.

Hand all the way because is easy, except nail is involved.

  72. I live abroad and I initially taught my kids to eat Nigerian food with cutlery, but I have changed that habit. As a rule, they must now use their hands for swallow (started last summer) and when I finish cooking soup, I allow them lick the pot. Hehehe, it gives me that satisfaction of 'my mama food sweet'. And please note, I grew up in a home where we didn't struggle for anything

  73. When I told my mom about this tweet, she said the girl should tell her parents they lack home training 😂😂😂, that she's not sure they use fork to eat Swallow and they didn't teach them that whilst they were growing up

  74. It depends on my mood but most times i use cutlery
It's been over a year I used my hand to eat swallow
It's not about forming...I just find using a fork more convenient
But how can one use hand when the eba and soup is in the same plate?,, the food would get really messy
If I must use hand then the eba and soup must be in separate plates
Attending a boarding school made me form the habit of using a fork to eat swallow

  84. Wait, How can you even eat swallow with Cutleries as an Ibo person? Igbos that have countless number of soups abi???? Can you eat "Achara" or "Apurapu Elele" with a spoon? Imagine eating "Ogbono" with a fork. or na "Isam" in a black soup(that one where you have to suck the periwinkles when eating) you will eat with kettle spoon? That simply means soups no be your thing.

  85. EBA AND FUFU IS NATIVE TO WEST AFRICA.EVERY MEAL HAS AN ORIGIN AND IT HAS ALWAYD BEEN EATEN WITH HANDS. THE WESTERNERS USE HANDS TO EAT THIER BURGER AND FRIES. WHY DON'T THEY USE CUTLERY FOR THEIR SANDWICH? AHA!!! IT IS BECAUSE, THEY ARE MORE COMFORTABLE WITH THE HANDS. I USED TO THINK LIKE SO MANY PEOPLE HERE UNTIL I UNPLUGGED MYSELF FROM THE BANDWAGON MENTALITY. I EVEN EAT EBA WITH HANDS. I DO IT DELIBERATELY. WHY SHOULD I BE ASHAMED OF MY CULTURE?
