Family petitions FG over Polish man’s cremation of Nigerian wife

The family of Mrs. Oluwashola Gaska (nee Adefolalu) has petitioned the Federal Government to unravel the mystery surrounding her death in Poland and the cremation of her corpse by her husband, Mr. Jakub Gaska, without their consent.

The deceased’s elder sister, Mrs. Abimbola Essien-Nelson, at a press conference in Lagos on Wednesday, alleged that Oluwashola was murdered and her corpse hastily cremated to cover it despite the family’s objection.

In the petition, dated January 29, 2017, and titled, ‘Petition against Mr. Jakub Gaska for the murder, unlawful cremation and burial of Oluwashola Atunrayo Gaska (nee Adefolalu) in Krakow, Poland, on December 28, 2016,’ the family detailed how the late Oluwashola, who studied in Poland, settled in the country and later married Gaska in 2010.

The petition read in part, “The last verbal conversation I had with the deceased took place on December 24, 2016, and she made no complaint about her health. At about 11.28am, on Wednesday, December 28, 2016, I received a telephone call from the husband that ‘there had been an accident, Shola had fallen unconscious and had died.’

“The husband did not tell me the nature of the so called accident. I was still conversing with the husband when the telephone was disconnected.

“The husband later called me back on the same day, stating that Oluwashola fell ill on Tuesday, and that he and his sister took her to the a hospital (the name of the hospital was not provided). He said she passed away at about 3am on Wednesday, December 28, 2016.”

The petition added that plans were being made to travel to Krakow to give the deceased a befitting burial when her husband informed them that her remains would be cremated as he and Olwashola agreed during a discussion.

It was gathered that the family requested that the husband wait until the arrival of family members in January 2017 to partake in the funeral rites.

“We also made it clear to him that because of the sudden nature of her death, we want to see her corpse. We sent several sets of representatives from the Nigerian community to him in this regard, but he refused to allow anyone access to the corpse. His response was that Oluwashola said only Ambibola and no other person, should see her corpse,” the petition read.

Gaska reportedly cremated Oluwashola’s remains on January 2, 2017. He also allegedly interred the ashes on January 7, 2017, without officially informing the Adefolalus.

The Senate President, Speaker, House of Representatives, President, Republic of Poland, among others, were also copied in the petition.

    2. Nigerians and death suspects. People should rather look after their health, anyone who looked alright at 8:00 could be dead at 09:00 if they have a preexisting illness which is not previously known.

    3. Thank you anon 10:14. Nigerians are damn too suspicious. Always blaming someone for people's deaths haba. That her sister didn't mention she was sick doesn't mean she was healthy

    4. Anon 10:14 and 11:56, but then, why the rush to cremate her body. And what kind of sordid discussion about not letting people see her corpse did they have? If she her death was due to an accident, how did she know she would die for her to be discussing who should or should not see her corpse? Really? The whole scenario is just too fishy. Nature of the accident wasn't stated, name of hospital wasn't given, he wouldn't wait for her family to get there first, refused fur anyone else to see her corpse except the sister who couldn't be there yet and then he cremated her against her family's wishes before anyone of them could get there. The guy is definitely hiding something abeg.

Well they can sue, they were officially married nd the husband have every right to decide what happened to her corpse, when the husband told her,she is the only one that can see shola corpse as requested by the deceased why did she not travel immediately to. All these are allegations, let's see how far it goes

    1. My dear leave matter, I'm sure you watch ID channel. It's the family of those people murdered by their spouses that set those investigations in motion. Some family has refused to give up especially in suspicious circumstances like this and their tenacity has been justified at the end. Many women and men have murdered their spouses both for insurance gain and by accident.just because you both are married legally doesn't stop the family from seeking an answers if they are not satisfied with her death.this is not Nigeria where everything is swept under the carpet.this death looks suspicious to me. The letter purportedly signed by her that no one should see her corpse on the event of death has to be tendered to police and the signature verified.even at that. The sister was already on her way and get still hurriedly cremated her before she arrives, why the hurry?

  5. Totally unacceptable! I pray they get to the root of this. How do you cremate a person without her family being part of the burial rites? Did she leave a standing order for that to be done? Hmmmmmm RIP to her.

  9. Nigerians and their way of doing things. You sent representatives and he refused to allow them access to her corpse! He refused to wait for you to pertake in her funeral rites. Lol. He also refused to officially inform you before cremating her! We are accustomed to doing things the wrong way that we expect others to do the same. According to their laws over there, her husband wasn't obligated to wait for you to join in the funeral rites. He also had the right to cremate his wife in your absence. If you had suspected foul play, the right thing to do was to inform the police instead of following the annoying Nigerian process of sending representatives. We're not talking about an African village setting here, we're talking about a developed country with well set laws. It's always good to know the laws of places we want to adopt as our new homes. The family should do the right thing by engaging polish law enforcement agencies instead of having unprofitable press conferences. May her soul rest in peace.

    2. It's very true nigeria will not do shit. The husband is also the next of kin. He is the one that will decide. Which kne is nigerian representative. They should get a.private detective and gather enough evidence to make them rule homice. But with the cremated body no evidence

    3. Blunt please stop. White people are more suspicious than Nigerians in the event of spouse death. Most have obtained justice at the end which shows that their suspicious was warranted. What are you talking about? I'm sure you think those stories on ID channels are fake.its the deceased family that usually fought with the help of investigators to uncover those crimes of the people killed by their spouse. Please stop sounding off about Nigerians and our ways.it makes you look ignorant.they have very reason to question her death and burial if they are not satisfied.her so called letter disallowing every other person from seeing her corpse has to be tendered and her signature verified.even at that. Police will still investigative his history and their lives together to make sure the letter was not signed under duress and manipulation.many have been caught and many will still get caught cause of families that fought hard. Their fight is in order.imagine this Taman Taylor talking about being legally married. So you think marriage gives you the licence to kill your spouse even in secret and get away with it. Stupid.

  16. First, is cremation the norm in that place? Couldn't he have waited a bit longer for the only person the deceased person consented to see her corpse? Now that she has been cremated nothing concrete can be established and I'm sure that is the original aim of the husband

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hmmm,he should have at least waited for one person to come and see her corpse and since the family wanted to be there for her funeral,he also should have waited simple. The lady didn't fall from the sky,she had a family before getting married to him. This one has nothing to do with laws of a country except the guy has something to hide amd i'm soo very sure if he had married a polish,he dare not try this nonsense, not involving the lady's family or else IHE GEH MEH.This guy is hiding something

  19. Hmmm, why where husband and wife discussing cremation at such a young age? Was she sick? Husband probably killed her during an argument, panicked and has covered it up! Very little her family in nigeria can do now, unless an autopsy was done before she was cremated. Sad.

  20. Marry oyinbo and ostracised your family. Polish ppl are extremely racist, they see black ppl as lower in status than street dogs. No true love existed in that marriage.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Nigerians can be so stupid sha...according to the law, the husband is her next of kin and if he decided not to even inform her family, it's his prerogative. Also in civilised countries, an autopsy must have been performed. I guess if he was African, they would have been shouting witchcraft.

    1. Nigerians are not stupid, you are the stupid one.dont think cos your someone next of kind gives you absolute rites to everything especially when their death suspicious . The family has every right to ask questions and seek answers if they are not satisfied. I have seen white family use everything they got and even blocked insurance pay to their daughters husband cause they suspect him of her death and at the end their fears were justified. Some have died cause of domestic violence, and the deceased family have fought and brought the perpetrator to justice.so my dear, manipulating your name into next of kind position is not an alibi. It doesn't cover from anything if the family is not satisfied and wants to initiate investigation. By the time police (not Nigerian police)finish with you, you will change your story hundred times and then say the truth.

    2. Spot on @ Mrs. T. Some people just make uninformed comments and believe everybody should accept it as the gospel truth. So being next of kin to your wife means you can do as you like with her in life and in death and nobody can say Nada? You better go and get re-oriented @ Tracy parker

  23. Was she sick in the hospital? Who certified her dead and what's the clinical cause? Also is the a record of the voice conversation between the Husband and the sister? Plus why is he trying to prove to the sister that he had her consent to cremate her and all? There's endless line of question that can incriminate this so called husband. Same happened to my dad right here in Nigeria and he was embalmed quickly before any family member was told he was dead. I'm still so angry and pained about that incident. Anyway, God grant Shola eternal rest cos the dead don't speak!

  26. i totally believe you mishandled this case Madam. even though i am eternally sorry for your loss.

At the point when he called you, you should have referred him directly to the Nigerian Consular in Krakow. She is after all a Nigerian and as such they are responsible for her well being and safety. They could have delayed the funeral rites legally which would give you basis for complaint. As of now, he can claim anything he likes cos there is no evidence you requested him to await your arrival. Also, you could have contacted the Police directly to ascertain the nature of the accident as you are her sister and deserve to know.

my point is simple, if you had been suspicious about the circumstances of her death, the most important cause of action is to make a legal case to the appropriate authorities immediately. that would at least temporarily halt any funeral rites until proper investigation is carried out.

All of us that have families that live abroad MUST have the number for the closest police station to them AT ALL TIMES. Please guys, this is very important. I pray we never have to use the number.

  27. Ladies, leave these Eastern European men alone! Their own women don't want them and Poland is a very racist country. Obviously, this young woman was murdered by the hands of someone close to her. I am so upset and saddened by this story. He probably wanted to put her into prostitution or beat her and killed her, they love to beat women over there. May this young lady's death not be in vain and women look thoroughly into the culture a man before moving to a strange land full of strange faces. RIP dearest.
