Gov.Ambode Announces Plan To Ban Danfo Before The End Of The Year

Lagos state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has said he has plans to take commercial buses popularly known as Danfo off Lagos roads before the end of the year.......

He explained that this is to create a more efficient, “well-structured and world class mass transportation system that would facilitate ease of movement within the city”.
Ambode also promised that his administration would soon roll out a comprehensive environmental sanitation policy that would make the city clean without much burden on the people in terms of taxes.
He said this at the 14th annual lecture of the Centre for Values in Leadership (CVL) at Muson Centre in the Onikan area of the state.

“When I wake up in the morning and see all these yellow buses and see Okada and all kinds of tricycles and then we claim we are a mega city, that is not true and we must first acknowledge that that is a faulty connectivity that we are running,” he said.

“Having accepted that, we have to look for the solution and that is why we want to banish yellow buses this year. We must address the issue of connectivity that makes people to move around with ease and that is where we are going.
For instance, people going from Ikorodu to CMS have started leaving their cars at home because the buses are very convenient and so why can’t we do that for other places? Yes, we don’t have the money to do that but we can go to the capital market and then improve on the technology of collection of fares and that will encourage investors and then the city will change.”

He said government was also embarking on massive reform in waste management system, expressing optimism that the plan will fully be actualized by July this year.
“We are also embarking on massive reform in the waste and sanitation management system. I don’t like the way the city is and the Private Sector Participants (PSP) collectors are not having enough capacity to do it but again should I tax people to death? The answer is no,” he said.

“I don’t want to tax people and so we need this partnership with the private sector so that they can invest in the sanitation management of the city and in no time maybe by July, the city will change forever.”
He added that massive infrastructures were being put in place in critical sectors of the economy.
Ambode said he had remained focused on some issues such as infrastructure, security, job creation, power, adoption of technology “as an enabler and driving investment through ease of doing business”

  9. Ha! You want more armed robbers, thieves and kidnappers in Lagos again. Dyu people even think about how these people will survive? You took food from Okada people's mouth, now u want to take even from Danfo's. There is God oh.

In ur quest for a beautiful city, do not create chaos while at it

    1. You've made plenty of sense. Those people can resort to any method just to get money if what they are managing to survive is hijacked from them. Hence, provision should be made to absorb them into the more organized and sophisticated transport system.

  14. First things first, Changing the face lagos state into a globally acknowledged mega city is a good idea. We can't be strategically located on the world's economic map and still look like a waste town. So his ideas are good.

However, what will the Danfo drivers do when they are out of business? I had  yellow buses of my own for a couple of years until September last year when I sold off to the drivers and I must tell you this thing rakes in money. Daily money that some families depend on. Some drivers have as much as five buses running, feeding their families and building houses. So when you take this source of income, what next for these families?  Are they going to employ drivers to drive more modern buses and run a metropolitan bus system? Or will lagos create an underground system and upgrade their profession to controllers and supervisors? Or will they just tell them 'sorry'? Now let's not talk about the boys at the parks and conductors who make money from their own screams to go and smoke igbo. Removing buses will send these 'red-eyed' boys into the streets. Can you imagine the possible increase in crime rate?
And what of commuters? How soon will the new system(s) be  up and running so it doesn't stop people from going about their daily businesses. I really like the new idea but proper structures need to be put in place for these things to work EFFICIENTLY and EFFECTIVELY. Except this is just a strategy to decongest lagos.

  15. Ambode is setting the pace, others plsssssssss follow. This is a man who travels and wants to replicate what he sees. I have always prayed for leaders who think like this. I'm so excited cos I have been developing something like this and I'm so happy it would be a reality in Nigeria. Thank you Ambode!

  17. I only hope he has plans to employ the danfo drivers and conductors if not the state of insecurity in Lagos will increase cos they'll now turn to robbery and kidnapping to survive.

  19. The number of deaths caused due to their non-chalant attitude and recklessness can't be ascertained.

My friend Jennifer burnt to death last year at Otedola bridge, when the bus she entered failed brake(brake that wasn't functioning but the driver kept managing it).

Reckless driving, horrible sitting condition and lack of maintenance for their buses is the reason for the ban.

The government has already made arrangements with NURTW to absorb them into the new scheme; also to re-orientate them.

  22. He should make sure he has an alternative source of livelihood for those drivers and tbeir conductors or else the high rate of crime that would greet him in Lagos state would be unbelievable.
