US Might Consider Social Media Passwords From Visa Applicants

Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly said Tuesday that visa applicants may be asked to hand over their passwords for their social media accounts by U.S. embassies.

Kelly said the move could be part of the Trump administration’s extreme vetting effort for visitors from the seven Muslim-majority nations which has been the source of controversy since Trump’s executive order took effect.

Kelly told the Homeland Security Committee at a hearing that, “we’re looking at some enhanced or some additional screening.”

"We may want to get on their social media, with passwords. It's very hard to truly vet these people in these countries, the seven countries. But if they come in, we want to say, what websites do they visit, and give us your passwords. So we can see what they do on the internet,” he added.

Kelly said anyone who refused to cooperate would be barred from entering the U.S. He made clear that no decision has been made, but tighter screening was on its way.

"These are the things we are thinking about. But over there we can ask them for this kind of information and if they truly want to come to America, then they will cooperate. If not, next in line."

Kelly also took blame for the hasty rollout of President Trump’s executive order.

“I should have delayed it just a bit so I could have talked to members of Congress,” Kelly said. “Going forward, I would have certainly taken some time to inform Congress, and that’s something I look forward to in the future.”

    2. Criminals and terrorist will simply delete their history before going to apply or for interview.

Besides they can have multiple anonymous account solely for such evil activities.

    3. On another note, the terrorist activities of these evil people is forcing USA (and possibly other countries will follow suit) enact very strict unfavourable laws just to protect their country.

      I do not blame them!

I watched "Patroits Day", an American movie starring Mark Wallberg. The movie is a total depiction of what happened in n the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing... and i tell you the terrorists had it so easy. Their motive? Absolute bullshit!

So whatever laws or measures they want to put in place to checkmate the influx of possible terrorist into country ...let them create such laws. Even if its a soul that will be saved.

  2. No sense whatsoever. If I have more than one SM account, give them just one password and doing shady stuff on the other one,how will they know. These people really had no plan when they came into government.

    2. They said all social media websites you visit, with the passwords...and that info is documented. You could lie and scale through, but the problem is if you somehow get embroiled with the police for another reason entirely, and mistakenly it's found out that you lied to gain access to the country, you'll enter trouble you are not supposed to enter. They are the one's who created this whole Internet thing, you don't know it better than them. Even emails deleted years ago can be retrived.

    3. My dear, they don't know it all. Most of these foreigners are coders(computer coding). The country is hacked even by high school students everyday. I may have another account with a totally different name where I do all sorts of shady things, how will that be linked to me? So this is some BS. A poorly thought out plan.

  3. I don't blame them those people are extremely wicked and they need to be ill treated to discourage them from coming in to their nation. They are dangerous species.

  12. What's my own? If you stay in your country nko? Or forget about going to US? I honestly have no sight I'm dying to see there. Canada, however, with (is it) five different time zones, I want to see. The gondolas in Italy, sunset in Paris, erm no other city. Oh yeah, Manchester city so I can visit old Trafford and London, so I can see Big Ben. The Irish countryside and the highlands of Scotland. Back to Italy and Spain for all those wineries. Oh dear. Ehen, that roundabout in Dubai I hear takes an hour to completely take a turn of is an attraction to that city plus the police Lamborghinis. That's about it. Nothing in US for me biko

    1. So when mall security guards ask you to open your hand bag so it can be searched before you get into the shop do you see that invasion of privacy? Cos I know they do that in Nigerian malls.
