Lagos State Govt Advises Indefinite Shutdown Of Queens College

The Lagos State Government has advised that the Queen’s College, Yaba, be shut down indefinitely for a proper treatment of the water system in the school.

The state Ministry of Health said results from samples taken from water sources in the school showed that the water was “polluted,” adding that the school’s food handlers were also culpable.

This is just as some parents have threatened to take legal action against the school, saying someone must be held responsible for the two deaths in the college.

PUNCH Metro had reported that no fewer than 50 boarding pupils of the school were admitted in the school’s sickbay after eating spaghetti and drinking water in the refectory.

Parents and pupils told Punch that two pupils of the school –Vivian Osuiniyi and Bithia Itulua–who were in Junior Secondary School two and three respectively, died as a result of the epidemic.

The school’s principal, Dr Lami Amodu, was later transferred to another school in Edo State.

The school had been shut for the past two weeks to enable a health team to conduct adequate investigation into the incident.

It was learnt that the pupils were to resume on Sunday, March 19, when the Lagos State Government issued a statement recommending an indefinite closure of the school.

  4. In short most areas of Lagos should be shut down as Lagos State does not provide potable water. There is no running water in Ikoyi, Banana Island, the entire Lekki Peninsula, Victoria Island and indeed most of Lagos - apart from the GRAs where the colonials provided for water works and pipes. Everyone else is on their own borehole, or buying water in tankers or from the mallams. What a shame in the 21st century.

    1. Well, I love he fact that I can dig my own borehole and pump my water out. Abeg no be say I go dey shower one day and one man who is supposed to control water to my house went to eat Amala. And I will be waiting for him to return. Every house should have their own bore hole.

    2. Kelvin and Adebisi, its common knowledge that Lagos state has no functioning water board, except private individuals who dug boreholes for their private use.

    3. Yori yori is right. There is no functional water board now. People are digging boreholes in their homes now. We were convinced to connect the so-called water from the corporation and not even a drop has come out of it since we did the connection. And they collected money to do that oh.

    4. @viviliscious show me ONE state hat has a functioning water board. Even in Abuja people sink their own bore holes to get water. I've never had to depend on water board for any drop of water in my life. I've always been used to pumping machines. Is it normal? No. Same way we don't have constant electricity in Nigeria and we use generators.

    5. Fct isn't so bad in my opinion. I don't have a bore hole, I depend 100% on water board and it rarely fails. This could be because the pressure on the system isn't as great as in other places. That said, the water bill can give you polio when you get it sha. You go just weak.

    3. Sandy Neky they used to be big. Along with St. Gregory's College and Holy Child school chain spread across the country. But now, we have Lekki British, AIS, Vivian Fowler. Which are private schools that have overtaken these ones.

    4. And our stupid president is busy fighting corruption. It can never work. Not in a society where a federal govt school is being advised to shut down by state govt for killing kids in their custody. This is why people steal. So they can afford to send their kids to safe schools.

You can only fight corruption in prosperity. When you fix qc and other govt schools and they are at par or better than private schools, affordable and on the other hand the price of corruption is high, you'd have sanity

    2. Chikito whatever. You obviously don't live on the island, water from borehole here are not clean due to high iron content.you have to buy chemicals to treat it before you can use it to flush the toilet not to talk of bath with it. We need water board on the island.so educate yourself and stop with your silly borehole comments.

  19. How difficult is it to ensure that the water pumped out is treated before it's usage? How much does a water treatment machine cost that students will be dropping off like flies? Why transfer the principal to another school? He should be sued and held accountable for his negligence.

  20. Chai a whole Queens college pro unitate. Federal government should look into this cos it's an FG school.

  21. Mtcheew...people's children being killed because of someone's lackadaisical attitude. It's hard for them to do their jobs yet they are getting paid. God forgive us all

    ReplyDelete
  22. The principal should be sacked or better still, be questioned for her incompetence. That woman does not know her job. She was careless and she was only good at sweeping issues under the carpet. It's a good thing the school should be shut down till further notice. It was not like that in my time.
